You do not need to become a marketer to make a side project easier to find on Google. Start by making each important page reachable, giving it a stable URL and clear visible content, then use Google Search Console to check whether Google can access and understand it. These steps improve discoverability; they do not guarantee rankings or traffic.
How do I get my side project found on Google?
Think of search visibility as a sequence: Google must discover a URL, fetch it, render its page, and understand what it contains before it can consider showing it in results. SEO, in this practical sense, is about helping search engines understand your pages and helping people decide whether to visit.

There is no shortcut that makes a useful project rank automatically. Google Search Central’s SEO Starter Guide puts it plainly: “There are no secrets here that’ll automatically rank your site first in Google (sorry!).” Focus first on the basics below, then make the project known to people who would actually use it.

Give each distinct piece of content or meaningful screen its own stable URL. Link important pages from other pages on your site using ordinary HTML links—an <a> element with a real destination—so both visitors and crawlers can follow them.
#1 Best Overall
A page that exists only behind an interaction, or that no discoverable page links to, may be difficult for a crawler to find. For a JavaScript single-page application, make sure meaningful views have distinct URLs and that navigation exposes crawlable links, not only click handlers. Google’s guidance on crawlable links and JavaScript SEO basics explains these requirements.
Make each page explain itself
Write distinct titles and descriptions
Give every important page a descriptive, unique title and a meta description that accurately summarizes that page. These elements help communicate what a page is about and can help a searcher decide whether it answers their need. Avoid reusing one generic title and description across the whole project.
Rank #2
Put the important information in visible text
Use semantic HTML for headings, paragraphs, lists, and links. Explain what the tool does, who it is for, and how to use it in text that appears in the page’s DOM. A screenshot, canvas drawing, or text added only as a CSS decoration is not a reliable substitute for meaningful page text. Google’s SEO Starter Guide and developer guide to Google Search cover the fundamentals.
Add a sitemap if it helps
A sitemap is a file listing URLs you want search engines to know about. It can help with discovery, especially as a project grows, but it is optional for a small site whose important pages are already linked clearly. A sitemap does not replace internal links and does not guarantee that Google will include a URL in results.
Rank #3
If you generate one, list the canonical, absolute URLs for your pages. Google Search Central says a sitemap is limited to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs; these are technical format limits, not targets a small project needs to approach. See Google’s sitemap overview and sitemap creation guidance.
Submitting a sitemap is not required. As Google’s Starter Guide says, “This isn’t required, and you should first focus on making sure people know about your site.”
Check how Google sees your pages
Google Search Console is the official, free place to monitor how Google Search interacts with your site. Use URL Inspection on an important page to see its indexed status and test how Google fetches and renders it. If a page is not appearing, check for accidental robots.txt blocking, a noindex directive, or inaccessible CSS and JavaScript resources.

If a page should not be indexed, use an appropriate noindex directive while allowing Google to crawl the page so it can see that directive, or restrict access when the content must be private. Google explains the distinction in its robots.txt documentation and guide to preventing indexing.
Best Value
Search Console is for monitoring and diagnosis, not a promise of inclusion. Google Search Central’s Search Essentials cautions: “It’s important to note that just because a page meets all of these requirements and best practices, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.”

Once the important pages are accessible, use Search Console’s performance reporting to see which searches and pages are receiving impressions and clicks. Treat the data as a way to spot questions people already use to find your project and pages that may need clearer descriptions. A report is feedback, not proof that a particular change will improve rankings.
For performance diagnosis, Google also points site owners to PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report. Use these to investigate user experience and technical issues; neither tool guarantees a ranking change.

Search is only one route to an audience. Share a useful launch post in communities where the project is relevant, link it from your documentation, or build a genuinely useful integration that people may reference. Keep promotion specific and audience-first: explain the problem the project solves rather than posting the same announcement everywhere.
Links from other sites can help people discover your work, as Google’s SEO Starter Guide notes. Avoid buying links or publishing mass-produced pages; focus on resources that are worth sharing. You can begin with Google’s free diagnostics rather than assuming you need paid SEO software. Google says it does not endorse third-party SEO tools, and those tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking data; use them only if a recurring workflow gives you a clear reason to evaluate them.
