If Windows starts only after you unplug an external USB drive, first disconnect it and restart, then check your UEFI/BIOS boot order. The PC may be trying the external drive before its internal Windows Boot Manager; that is a plausible cause, not proof the drive is faulty. Try the reversible checks first, and use Windows recovery tools only if the computer still will not start.
1. Disconnect the drive and try a normal start
- Shut down the PC completely.
- Unplug the external USB drive, then turn the PC on.
- If Windows starts, wait until you are signed in before reconnecting the drive.
A successful start without the drive tells you that its presence or the firmware’s response to it may be involved. It does not establish that the drive has failed. Once Windows is stable, protect any important files on the external drive and treat drive-health checks as a separate issue.

SanDisk identifies USB boot priority as a common explanation for this symptom, but the cause can vary by PC: SanDisk Support: issues booting while a USB drive is connected.

UEFI/BIOS firmware selects a boot device before Windows loads. If removable storage is ahead of the internal Windows entry, the PC may try the external drive first. The preferred entry is usually Windows Boot Manager for the internal system drive, though labels differ by computer.

- Move the internal Windows Boot Manager or system drive above USB or removable storage.
- Save the change, exit setup, and restart with the external drive connected.
For guidance on boot order, see MSI’s explanation of boot priority. Microsoft likewise advises consulting the PC manufacturer for model-specific boot instructions: Windows Recovery Environment.
3. Reconnect the drive after Windows loads
If the PC starts with the drive unplugged, connect it after login and check whether Windows can access it. Then restart with the drive attached. If the startup problem returns, recheck the boot order and whether the external device has a bootable system or recovery environment on it.
Do not format or initialize the drive as a shortcut. Those actions can erase data, and they are not needed to test whether boot priority is the problem.

4. Check other firmware settings carefully
If the internal Windows entry is already first, use the computer maker’s manual to inspect any relevant USB or boot settings. Firmware options and their effects are model-specific, so avoid changing several settings at once.
- Do not casually disable Legacy USB Support. A USB keyboard or mouse may depend on it, especially during startup.
- Prefer testing with the external drive disconnected and confirming boot priority before changing broad compatibility settings.
- A Secure Boot error after a Secure Boot update is a separate, specialized problem. Microsoft’s procedure for a particular firmware trust-database failure is not a general fix for external-drive boot priority: Microsoft Secure Boot recovery guidance.
5. Run Startup Repair from Windows Recovery Environment
If unplugging the drive and correcting boot order do not restore startup, try Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). It may appear automatically after repeated startup failures. If it does, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart.
If WinRE does not appear, Microsoft explains how to start it from installation media: boot from the media and choose Repair my PC, rather than starting an installation. Follow the PC manufacturer’s instructions for booting from media: Microsoft’s WinRE instructions.

Startup Repair attempts to fix certain Windows startup problems, including some involving system files or boot configuration data. It cannot resolve every firmware or hardware fault. Microsoft’s tool overview is at Startup Repair.
If the device uses BitLocker encryption, have the recovery key available. WinRE may require it to access recovery tools or the encrypted Windows installation.
6. Choose recovery based on when the failure began
If startup broke after a Windows update
In WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options and consider Uninstall Updates. Microsoft describes this and other recovery choices in Recovery options in Windows.

If System Restore is available
System Restore may let you return system files and settings to an earlier restore point. Its availability depends on the PC and whether a suitable restore point exists. It is a recovery option, not a substitute for backing up important files.
If you can reach Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. Microsoft notes that if the issue does not recur there, default settings, basic drivers, or services may be contributing factors. See Start your PC in Safe Mode.
7. Reserve reset or reinstall for last
Resetting Windows or reinstalling it is a larger intervention than changing boot priority or using Startup Repair. Check the effect of the specific recovery option before proceeding, and back up files whenever possible. Microsoft warns that a clean installation removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings; see Reinstall Windows.

If recovery tools cannot restore startup, ask the PC manufacturer for model-specific firmware steps or arrange service. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft and your device maker for current support options: Microsoft: Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025.
Which fix should you try first?
| Option | Best fit | Impact and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Disconnect the external drive | First check when the PC will not start with the drive attached | Reversible; isolates the symptom but does not identify a failed component. |
| Change boot priority | The PC starts without the drive, or firmware appears to try USB first | Low-impact when you change only the boot order; exact labels depend on the PC. |
| Startup Repair | Boot order is not the issue and Windows startup still fails | Targets certain Windows startup faults; may not fix firmware or hardware problems. |
| Uninstall an update or use System Restore | The problem followed an update, or a suitable restore point is available | Availability and effects depend on the recovery option and device configuration. |
| Reset or clean installation | Less destructive recovery options have failed | Greater data and configuration risk; a clean installation removes personal files, apps, customizations, and settings. |
Windows 10 and Windows 11 recovery features can vary by device, configuration, encryption, and version. If you need installation media, Microsoft documents creating it on another working PC and using it to access repair tools: Create installation media for Windows. Media is a way into recovery when needed, not a fix for an incorrectly ordered boot list.
