The Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) is a graphical Windows host for writing, running, testing, and debugging Windows PowerShell scripts. You can still use it for existing Windows PowerShell 5.1 workflows, but it does not support PowerShell 6 or later and is no longer receiving active feature development. For new PowerShell scripting, Microsoft recommends Visual Studio Code (VS Code) with its PowerShell extension.
What the PowerShell ISE is
The ISE is an application for working with Windows PowerShell—not a separate PowerShell language or engine. It combines an interactive command pane with a script editor, so you can enter commands, write scripts, run them, and debug them in a graphical interface.

Microsoft documents features including a multiline script pane, syntax coloring, tab completion, IntelliSense, context-sensitive help, selective execution of script text, a command composition window, and debugging tools such as breakpoints. These features make the ISE useful for editing and troubleshooting scripts without switching constantly between a text editor and a console.

How to open it and use the basic workflow
On Windows installations that include the ISE, open it from the Start menu or run powershell_ise.exe from a command shell or the Windows Run box. The ISE is a Windows component, so availability can depend on the Windows installation and configuration.
- Open the ISE. Find Windows PowerShell ISE in Start, or enter
powershell_ise.exein a command shell or Run box. - Choose a workspace. Enter commands in the command pane, or write a script in the script pane. In the command pane, Shift+Enter inserts a blank line.
- Run the code you need. Select a portion of a script to execute just that text, or use F5 to run a script. This supports trying a small section before running the full script.
- Get help in context. Use the Help menu or press F1 for help on a command or topic.
- Debug when needed. Set breakpoints and use the ISE’s debugging support to inspect script execution and investigate problems.
The ISE has its own profile script, Microsoft.PowerShellISE_profile.ps1. It is distinct from a general PowerShell console profile, so settings or commands in one profile should not be assumed to apply to the other. Microsoft’s ISE reference documents the profile and interaction features.
Which PowerShell versions it supports—and what “supported” means
Microsoft documents ISE support for Windows PowerShell through version 5.1. The ISE does not support PowerShell 6 or later, including PowerShell 7. That is an engine boundary: installing a newer PowerShell does not turn the ISE into an editor for it.
Microsoft says the ISE is no longer in active feature development. It continues to receive security and high-priority servicing fixes as a Windows component, and Microsoft currently has no plans to remove it from Windows. In other words, maintenance support does not mean ongoing feature development or compatibility with newer PowerShell releases. These status details are from Microsoft’s ISE introduction, last updated November 20, 2025.

ISE or VS Code with the PowerShell extension?
The practical choice depends on the PowerShell engine and operating system you need. The ISE remains an option for a Windows PowerShell 5.1 environment; VS Code with Microsoft’s PowerShell extension is the recommended editor path for newer PowerShell development. Microsoft’s VS Code documentation describes support for PowerShell 7.2 and higher on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and Windows PowerShell 5.1 on Windows when .NET Framework 4.8 is present. Consult Microsoft’s current VS Code PowerShell development guidance for supported versions and requirements, which may change.

How to move from ISE without changing engines all at once
Moving to VS Code does not require an immediate switch from Windows PowerShell 5.1 to PowerShell 7. Microsoft’s migration guidance says PowerShell 7 installs and runs side-by-side with Windows PowerShell, allowing you to test and compare editions before deploying a migration. VS Code with the PowerShell extension is the supported scripting environment for PowerShell 7.

- Install VS Code and Microsoft’s PowerShell extension, following the current setup and compatibility guidance.
- To use a familiar arrangement, open the VS Code Command Palette and run
PowerShell: Enable ISE Mode. To return to the default layout, runPowerShell: Disable ISE Mode. - Test scripts against the PowerShell edition and version they are intended to run on. Keep Windows PowerShell 5.1 available while checking behavior in PowerShell 7, then decide when each workload is ready to move.
ISE mode changes the extension’s layout; it does not add PowerShell 7 support to the ISE itself. Microsoft’s migration guide explains side-by-side installation and the recommended scripting environment.
