Check what the updater is reporting
thinkorswim checks for and installs available updates as the desktop application opens. A “Installing Updates” message does not, by itself, tell you whether the app has frozen or encountered an error.

If progress has stopped or an error appears
Check that the computer is connected to the internet, then restart thinkorswim. Those are Schwab’s stated first checks when the update stops progressing or reports an error. If the same problem remains, use Schwab’s installation support rather than assuming that a particular local file, security setting, or other cause is responsible.

Check whether the computer meets current desktop requirements
Schwab’s download instructions currently list Windows 11 or later and macOS 14 or later for desktop installation. Requirements may change; consult the live Schwab download page if your system is older or you are unsure which installer applies.
For Linux, Schwab specifies Zulu OpenJDK 21 and notes that Linux, Solaris, and other Unix variants may require manual updates and tuning. Schwab does not officially support configuring those operating systems, so desktop update behavior on them may require platform-specific help.
Know what the installation-time estimate does—and does not—mean
Schwab’s download FAQ estimates that downloading and installing should take less than ten minutes, depending on the available internet or mobile connection. That is a general estimate for download and installation, not a guaranteed duration for an individual update or a cutoff that proves the updater is frozen. If you need platform access while the desktop installation is unresolved, Schwab describes thinkorswim web as browser-based and requiring no download. Schwab presents it as offering essential tools; do not assume it has every desktop feature. Whether it is a workable temporary option depends on the tools you need.
