Call browser.wsEndpoint() on a Puppeteer Browser instance to get its WebSocket URL. To attach Puppeteer to a browser that is already running, pass that browser’s actual endpoint as browserWSEndpoint to puppeteer.connect().
Get the endpoint from a Puppeteer-launched browser
Browser.wsEndpoint() returns the WebSocket URL for connecting to that browser. The documented shape is ws://HOST:PORT/devtools/browser/<id>. The host, port and ID belong to a particular browser instance, so there is no universal endpoint to copy.
This runnable Node.js example launches a browser, prints its endpoint, detaches Puppeteer while leaving the browser running, then reconnects and closes it:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const browserWSEndpoint = browser.wsEndpoint();
console.log(browserWSEndpoint);
// Detach Puppeteer; the browser and its pages keep running.
browser.disconnect();
// Connect again using the endpoint from this browser instance.
const reconnectedBrowser = await puppeteer.connect({ browserWSEndpoint });
console.log(await reconnectedBrowser.version());
// Close the browser process when you are finished with it.
await reconnectedBrowser.close();
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Keep the endpoint associated with the browser that produced it. Do not substitute an endpoint copied from an example or another running instance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect to a browser started elsewhere
If another process or service launched the browser, obtain the endpoint it exposes and provide that exact value to puppeteer.connect(). The option is named browserWSEndpoint:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browserWSEndpoint = process.env.BROWSER_WS_ENDPOINT;
if (!browserWSEndpoint) {
throw new Error('Set BROWSER_WS_ENDPOINT to the running browser endpoint');
}
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({ browserWSEndpoint });
try {
const pages = await browser.pages();
console.log(`Connected; open pages: ${pages.length}`);
} finally {
// Detach without closing the browser launched by the other process.
browser.disconnect();
}
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Use the endpoint supplied by your browser or service; a sample such as ws://127.0.0.1:9222/... is illustrative, not a live endpoint for your environment. Puppeteer’s connection options also include browserURL; use the connection information your running browser exposes.

Look up the browser’s debugger URL
Puppeteer’s API reference notes that a browser’s WebSocket debugger URL can also be found in the webSocketDebuggerUrl field at http://HOST:PORT/json/version. Replace the host and port with those for the browser you are trying to reach, then use the returned URL rather than guessing the browser ID. This lookup applies only when that browser exposes the debugging endpoint in the environment you can access.
Disconnecting is not the same as closing
browser.disconnect()detaches Puppeteer. The browser and its pages continue running, so another client can connect later.browser.close()closes the browser. Use it when the browser process should end, not when you only want to release the Puppeteer connection.
Troubleshooting endpoint and connection problems
browser.wsEndpoint is not a function
Call the method on a Puppeteer Browser object returned by puppeteer.launch() or puppeteer.connect(), not on a page, a configuration object, or a string. Confirm that the variable you call it on is the browser instance.

The endpoint is empty, stale or belongs to another browser
Read wsEndpoint() from the live browser instance you intend to control. Endpoints are instance-specific; do not reuse one captured from a different browser. If the browser was launched outside Puppeteer, retrieve its current endpoint from that browser or its service.
puppeteer.connect() cannot connect
- Check that the browser is still running and that the endpoint is the exact WebSocket URL it exposed.
- Make sure the host and port are reachable from the process running Puppeteer. A loopback address refers to the local environment, which may differ between a host machine, container or remote service.
- When available, inspect
http://HOST:PORT/json/versionin the browser’s environment and use itswebSocketDebuggerUrl. - If using a browser launched by Puppeteer, capture the endpoint before detaching; then reconnect with
puppeteer.connect({ browserWSEndpoint }).
The browser closed after cleanup
Use disconnect() if you intend to leave the browser running. Use close() only when ending the browser is intended.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a way to retrieve a Puppeteer browser’s WebSocket endpoint. If your actual goal is to capture a website rather than control a browser session, one request can return a screenshot without setting up Puppeteer:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed; its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
