Use browser.process() to get the Node.js child-process handle for a browser launched by Puppeteer. Start that browser with puppeteer.launch(); use puppeteer.connect() when a browser is already running. The distinction matters for cleanup: browser.close() shuts down the browser and its pages, while browser.disconnect() detaches Puppeteer without stopping the browser.
Get the process handle from a launched browser
puppeteer.launch() returns a Browser object. Its process() method returns the associated Node.js ChildProcess, which you can use when your application needs access to the local child process.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const child = browser.process();
if (child) {
console.log('Browser PID:', child.pid);
}
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Use the page and child process as needed.
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The process handle is associated with a browser launched by Puppeteer. Do not assume a browser connected through an external WebSocket endpoint gives you a locally owned child process to manage.

Choose launch, a custom executable, or connect
| Approach | Use it when | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
puppeteer.launch() |
You want Puppeteer to start and own the browser process. | Puppeteer normally downloads and uses a specific Chrome version. This is the most straightforward way to obtain its child-process handle. |
puppeteer.launch({ executablePath }) |
Your application deliberately uses an installed Chrome or Chromium binary. | Confirm that the binary exists and is compatible. Puppeteer documents compatibility with its bundled browser as the guaranteed case. |
puppeteer.connect() |
A browser is already running, perhaps in another service or container. | You need an accessible WebSocket endpoint, and the system that started the browser remains responsible for its process. |
For launch settings, including executablePath, arguments, environment variables, signal handling and startup timeout, see the LaunchOptions reference. Its documented default startup timeout is 30 seconds; setting it to 0 disables the timeout. Options and compatibility can vary with Puppeteer releases, so check the reference for the version installed in your project.

Connect to a browser that is already running
When another process or service starts Chrome, connect using its WebSocket endpoint. You get a Puppeteer Browser API handle, but connection and process ownership are separate: disconnecting Puppeteer does not stop the external browser.

Close the browser or only disconnect?
await browser.close()closes the browser and its associated pages. Use it when Puppeteer launched the browser and your work is finished.browser.disconnect()detaches Puppeteer but leaves the browser process and pages running. Use it when the browser is managed elsewhere and should remain available.
Choose based on who owns the browser lifecycle. A Puppeteer connection alone does not mean the connected Node.js process owns the operating-system process.
Troubleshoot process access and launch failures
browser.process() does not give you a child process
Check how the browser was obtained. The method is relevant to a Puppeteer-launched browser; an externally started browser connected over WebSocket may not have a locally owned child process available to your code. Manage the external process through the service or system that started it.

Puppeteer cannot find or start Chrome
Check the installed Puppeteer version, its browser installation, and any configured executablePath. Make sure the path points to an executable available to the application user. If using a separately installed Chrome or Chromium, verify compatibility; Puppeteer only guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser. See the launch options and configuration guide.

The browser starts but fails to initialize in a deployment
Check operating-system packages and the runtime or container configuration rather than assuming the same fix applies everywhere. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide specifically notes that the default Google Cloud Run Node.js runtime lacks system packages needed for Headless Chrome and advises supplying a Dockerfile with the missing dependencies. This is a Cloud Run-specific caveat, not a universal deployment instruction. Consult the troubleshooting guide for the environment you use.

Launch waits too long or times out
The LaunchOptions reference documents a 30-second default startup timeout and permits 0 to disable it. Increasing or disabling the timeout can help diagnose slow startup, but it does not fix a missing executable or unavailable system dependency; check those causes as well.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a website screenshot rather than access to Chrome’s child process, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF without setting up Puppeteer in your application. The API can return PNG, JPEG or WebP; for example, request WebP with this cURL call. Replace the URL with the page you want to capture.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and removed along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
