It returns a string containing the browser name and version, not just a bare version number.
Get the version of Puppeteer’s default browser
With the puppeteer package, launch a browser, await its version() method, and close it when you are done:

}The result is a string such as Chrome/61.0.3153.0 or HeadlessChrome/61.0.3153.0. These are examples of the API’s output format, not recommendations for a current browser version. The format may change, so avoid treating it as a stable structured value. Puppeteer API documentation
Check a specific Chrome installation
browser.version() reports the browser represented by that Browser object. To inspect a particular installation, configure Puppeteer to launch it:

}Replace /path/to/chrome with the executable path on the host operating system. Puppeteer also supports selecting a Chrome channel in launch options; see the launch options documentation. Puppeteer only guarantees compatibility with the browser it bundles, so an alternate executable may not be a supported match. Puppeteer configuration documentation
Use puppeteer-core with an explicit browser
puppeteer-core does not download a browser. Its Node launch options require either executablePath or channel:

}Choose the path or supported channel for the environment where the script runs. If you need to confirm which browser builds Puppeteer supports, consult its supported browsers mapping for your installed Puppeteer version. The mapping changes; for example, the page observed on October 3, 2026 listed Puppeteer v25.12.0 with Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57. That mapping does not identify the browser installed on your machine.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Calling the method without a browser object: launch or connect to a browser first, then call
browser.version(). - Expecting only digits: the returned string includes a browser name prefix in documented examples. Treat it as a display string unless your code explicitly handles changes to its format.
- Assuming Puppeteer uses system Chrome: the method reports the browser attached to the instance. Set
executablePathor a supportedchannelif you intend to launch another installation. - Using a browser build Puppeteer may not support: check the supported-browser mapping for your Puppeteer version. Compatibility is guaranteed only for the bundled browser when you supply an alternate executable.
- Forgetting to close the browser: use
try/finallyso the browser process is closed even if later code throws an error.
