To make Messenger conversations float over other apps on a Samsung Galaxy, enable Bubbles in Galaxy notification settings and switch on Chat heads in Messenger. The controls are separate, and menus can vary by phone, One UI version, and app version, so follow the closest matching labels available on your device.
Turn on Messenger bubbles

Open Settings on your Galaxy phone.

Tap Notifications > Advanced settings > Floating notifications, then choose Bubbles. Samsung documents this route for One UI 3 through One UI 6; later versions or different models may use different labels. Samsung’s floating-bubbles guide explains the feature and its app-specific controls.

Find Chat heads and turn it on. If Messenger asks to open phone Settings, follow the prompt and enable the requested setting.

When a message arrives, tap its bubble to open the conversation and reply. Drag the bubble to move it. To dismiss it, press and hold the bubble, drag it to the bottom of the screen, and release it over the X.
Samsung notes that some Messenger pop-up controls are managed inside the app rather than in the phone’s Settings. Its Galaxy guide to floating bubbles and pop-ups describes both the device-level and Messenger-level steps.

Know which kind of pop-up you want
Messenger Chat heads and Bubbles
This is the floating conversation icon for reopening and replying to a Messenger chat while using another app. Samsung’s procedure requires both the Galaxy Bubbles option and Messenger’s Chat heads switch.

This Galaxy feature shows notifications from selected apps as small icons that can expand into pop-up windows. To set it up, go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Floating notifications, select Smart pop-up view, then choose apps under Included apps. Samsung says it works only with apps that support Multi window. It is a different notification behavior, not a substitute for enabling Messenger Chat heads.

Brief or Detailed notification pop-up style
On One UI 8, per-app notification appearance is available under Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app], where the options include Brief and Detailed styles. These change how a notification appears; they do not keep a Messenger conversation open as a floating bubble. Samsung’s One UI 8 notification guide, last updated April 19, 2026, notes that menus and screenshots can vary by model and software version.
Fix common problems
There is no Floating notifications or Bubbles option
Check the installed software version at Settings > About phone > Software information. Menu availability and labels can vary with the Galaxy model, software version, carrier, and network. Samsung provides the version-check path in its One UI 7 overview.

Chat heads is missing in Messenger
Look in Messenger’s own settings and current notification options. Some Messenger controls are app-specific and may not appear in the device Settings app.
The bubble still does not appear
Check the two controls independently: Galaxy Floating notifications must be set to Bubbles, and Messenger’s Chat heads switch must be on. Enabling only one does not complete Samsung’s documented setup.

A screen-overlay warning appears while granting permission
Use Samsung’s overlay guidance only for this warning, not as a general fix for missing bubbles. Go to Settings > Apps > More options > Special access > Appear on top and disable the relevant overlay while granting the permission. Grant permissions only to apps you trust. You want expandable notifications instead
Choose Smart pop-up view under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Floating notifications, then select supported apps under Included apps. The app must support Multi window.

Samsung’s floating-bubbles instructions cover One UI 3 through One UI 6, while its One UI 8 notification guidance describes newer notification controls. The exact labels and availability are not universal. Check your software version and use the nearest equivalent menu labels on your Galaxy rather than assuming every model has an identical Settings screen.
