To use Alexa on a Samsung tablet, install the Amazon Alexa app from the tablet’s app store and sign in with your Amazon account. You do not need to register an Echo just to use the app. Linking Alexa to Samsung SmartThings is a separate, optional step for controlling compatible smart-home devices.
Choose the setup you need

Install and sign in to Alexa on your Samsung tablet
- Open the app store on the tablet and search for the Amazon Alexa app. Amazon’s general guidance is to download and install Alexa from the mobile device app store.
- Open Alexa and sign in with your Amazon account.
- Complete any verification or permission prompts shown in the app.
If you only want Alexa available on the tablet, you can stop after signing in. The exact app availability and experience may depend on your Galaxy Tab model, Android version, country, and local app-store listing. The official guidance cited here does not provide a complete compatibility list, so check the current listing for your device and region.

Link Alexa to Samsung SmartThings
This is an optional smart-home setup, not a requirement for installing Alexa on the tablet. It lets Alexa access compatible SmartThings devices after you link accounts and run discovery.

- Open the Alexa app and complete any account verification or permission prompts.
- Open Devices and find the smart-home skills area. Depending on the app version, Samsung also describes a route through the Message Alexa field to Smart Home Skills.
- Search for SmartThings and enable the skill.
- Sign in with the Samsung or SmartThings account and authorize access.
- Start device discovery. If prompted, authorize Location and wait for discovery to finish; Samsung says this process can take up to 45 seconds.
- Review the discovered devices and set up the ones you want to use. If discovery does not start automatically, manually choose Add Device, select SmartThings, and run discovery.
Samsung’s U.S. guide describes Alexa control for compatible lights, on/off switches, dimmer switches, thermostats, locks, and supported routines. It also describes checking the status of motion and contact sensors. Device support can vary; this list is not a guarantee for every product or region.

Disconnect SmartThings
Samsung says you can unlink Amazon Alexa in SmartThings’ linked-services settings, or disable the SmartThings skill in the Alexa app. Labels and menu locations can change between app versions.
Troubleshoot smart-home discovery
- Confirm compatibility: Check whether the specific smart-home product works with Alexa. Amazon identifies the “Works with Alexa” badge as a certification that a device works with Alexa.
- Follow the device maker’s setup flow: In Alexa’s Add Device process, use the instructions for the product’s brand.
- Check Wi-Fi requirements: Amazon notes that most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands. This does not apply universally to every device, so check its instructions.
- Start SmartThings discovery manually: If automatic discovery fails to begin, choose Add Device, select SmartThings, and run Discover Devices.
- Allow time after Location authorization: Samsung says its documented SmartThings discovery can take up to 45 seconds.
These checks address supported setup steps; they do not guarantee a fix for every account, network, or device issue. The official guidance cited here does not establish Samsung-tablet-model-specific Alexa troubleshooting.

What not to assume about Alexa on Galaxy Tab
Samsung’s Alexa built-in instructions in the sources cited here concern TVs and monitors, not tablets. They do not establish that Alexa comes built in on a Samsung tablet. Nor do the cited app instructions establish hands-free Alexa activation, a minimum Android version, or availability for every Galaxy Tab model and country. Check the app listing and the options shown on your own device.
