In 2026, Germany planned €73 billion of Bobl financing through 14 auctions. A dated market reference—not a guaranteed investor return—was a 3.37% yield on 7 October for the 2.90% Bobl due 8 October 2031. Bobls also sit within a wider Federal-securities market that benchmarks euro-area bonds and supports collateral and risk management.
What are German Bobl bonds?
“Bobl” is the market shorthand for Bundesobligationen, or German Federal notes. They are nominal, fixed-rate securities with a five-year original maturity, positioned between two-year Schatz bills and longer-maturity Bunds. The German Finance Agency says it has issued two new Bobl series annually since 2015. The Finance Agency’s Federal Notes overview explains the instrument.

Each Bobl pays a fixed coupon annually and is redeemed at par when it matures. The coupon is the stated interest payment; it is not the same as the yield an investor earns at a given market price.
What was the German five-year bond yield in 2026?
On 7 October 2026, the Deutsche Bundesbank reported a 3.37% reference yield for the Bobl with ISIN DE000BU25075, a 2.90% coupon and maturity on 8 October 2031. This is a dated secondary-market reference value: it changes as the security’s price changes and is not a guaranteed realized return. The Bundesbank’s October 2026 Federal-securities yield data identifies the observation.
#1 Best Overall
A separate observation came at the 22 September 2026 reopening of the same October 2031 Bobl: the Finance Agency reported an average auction yield of 3.28% and a bid-to-cover ratio of 1.2. That auction result describes that particular sale, not a yield still available on 7 October. The issuer’s issuance results list auction outcomes.
How coupon, yield and investor return differ
- Coupon: The fixed annual interest payment set for the bond, expressed as a percentage of its face value.
- Yield: A market measure that reflects the bond’s price and promised cash flows at a particular time. If price moves, yield changes even though the coupon does not.
- Realized return: What an investor actually earns over a chosen holding period, accounting for the purchase price, coupon payments, sale price if sold early, accrued interest, fees, taxes and reinvestment of payments.
A bond trading below par generally offers a yield above its coupon, while one trading above par generally offers a yield below its coupon, all else equal. Yield to maturity is a calculation based on holding to maturity and specified assumptions; it is not a promise that an investor’s personal result will match that figure.
What did Germany plan to issue in 2026?
The German Finance Agency planned €73 billion of Bobl financing across 14 auctions in 2026. The schedule included two new 2031 series and reopenings of existing issues. Planned financing is an issuance program, not an indication of the yield investors would receive at any later date. What risks do Bobl investors face?
Interest-rate and market-price risk
Bond prices generally move inversely to market yields. If rates rise, an existing Bobl’s price tends to fall; if rates decline, its price tends to rise. The price effect matters if an investor sells before maturity. The Finance Agency classifies Bobl price risk as moderate. It also notes that longer remaining terms and lower coupons generally mean greater price sensitivity to a given rate move.
Rank #3
Issuer risk
The Finance Agency characterizes issuer risk for Federal securities as extremely low and describes them as gilt-edged. That is the issuer’s assessment, not a claim that repayment is risk-free or that all investor risks disappear.
Liquidity and early sale
The issuer rates the risk of being unable to sell before maturity as very low, citing active trading and market maintenance by the Finance Agency and Bundesbank. Low stated liquidity risk does not guarantee a particular execution price, especially when market conditions move.
Rank #4
Inflation, reinvestment and personal costs
Fixed payments can lose purchasing power if inflation is high. Coupon payments may have to be reinvested at different rates, and an investor’s net result also depends on taxes, transaction costs, custody charges and opportunity cost. The official yield figures do not calculate an individual investor’s after-tax return.

How do German bonds affect European markets?
The Finance Agency says yields on Federal securities are regarded internationally as benchmarks for sovereign and corporate bonds from other euro-area issuers. It also identifies several institutional functions for German Federal securities: preferred collateral for short-term interbank lending, instruments banks use to manage interest-rate risk, deliverable securities for major euro futures contracts and tools for euro-area monetary-policy implementation. The agency’s overview of Federal securities describes these roles.

These functions help connect German government debt to euro-area pricing, collateral and hedging. They do not show that Bobls alone determine other countries’ borrowing costs, quantify spillovers from a particular Bobl or predict market moves in 2026.

Original maturity is a useful starting point, but it is not enough to judge relative risk or value. The Finance Agency describes Schatz as a two-year instrument, Bobls as five-year notes and Bunds as longer-original-maturity securities. Compare the instruments using values measured on the same date.
| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Remaining maturity and duration | They help indicate exposure to interest-rate changes; longer remaining terms generally bring stronger price responses. |
| Yield and observation date | Yields change with prices, so figures from different dates are not a like-for-like comparison. |
| Coupon and price relative to par | Together, they help explain why two securities with different coupons can have different yields. |
| Liquidity and issue size | Trading conditions can affect the ease and price of buying or selling. |
| Holding horizon | An investor who may need to sell early faces more immediate market-price exposure than one able to hold to maturity. |
The Finance Agency’s Federal-securities overview describes the maturity segments and general price-risk relationship.

The Finance Agency says individuals can buy or sell Bobls through a bank or other credit institution on exchange trading days. Providers generally charge purchase, sale and custody fees; the issuer says there is generally no minimum or maximum investment amount. Before placing an order, check the provider’s access, actual charges, custody terms and availability in your location. Use the security’s ISIN to distinguish the exact issue.
