Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use its core Search systems, and that ordinary SEO fundamentals still apply. What changed is how some results are assembled and shown—and how publishers can inspect impressions from those AI features. This article does not report a site-level before-and-after figure: without matched Search Console and analytics data, an “our numbers” claim would be unsupported.
GEO and SEO: the practical difference for Google
SEO generally describes work to help a site’s pages be discovered, indexed, and shown in Search. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is a newer label for trying to make content useful and visible in generated answers. For Google’s AI Search features, that distinction does not amount to a new set of technical eligibility rules: Google says the features rely on its core Search ranking and quality systems, and that established SEO practices remain relevant.

| Question | Conventional SEO in Google Search | GEO claims in the context of Google AI Search |
|---|---|---|
| Where might a page appear? | In conventional web results. | As a supporting link in an AI Overview or AI Mode response, as well as potentially in conventional results. |
| What makes a page eligible? | It must meet Google’s Search eligibility requirements, including being indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. | Google documents no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. |
| What optimization is supported? | Make pages crawlable, useful, readable, and technically accessible; use structured data when appropriate and consistent with visible content. | Google does not require special AI files, extra markup, special schema, or tiny “chunks” of text for these features. |
| What can be measured? | Search Console reports conventional Search performance, while site analytics can track downstream behavior. | Google’s Generative AI performance report includes AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, with page, country, date, and device views. Analytics is needed for outcomes such as conversions. |
Google’s Search Central guidance states: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” That is specific to Google; it should not be treated as a rule for every service that generates answers.
What changed in the search experience
Results can be synthesized around a question
Google describes a process in which its Search systems retrieve relevant, current pages and use retrieved information to generate a response with supporting links. Its documentation also describes “query fan-out”: the system can issue related searches concurrently to explore subtopics, rather than handling a query only as one conventional search.
#1 Best Overall
That can make an AI response broader or more exploratory than a ranked list of links. It also means a supporting link’s appearance depends on the response being generated; Google does not publish a guaranteed formula for earning a citation.
AI Overviews and AI Mode serve different purposes
Google says AI Overviews appear when its systems determine that an AI response adds value beyond classic Search. AI Mode is intended for further exploration, reasoning, and complex comparisons. The features may use different models and techniques, so their responses and surfaced links can vary. This interface change is real, but it does not establish a stable, universal list of “GEO ranking factors.”

What did not change: eligibility and useful content still matter
Google says pages must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be eligible as supporting links in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Meeting requirements and best practices still does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.

- Allow Google to crawl important pages, and connect them through useful internal links.
- Present important information as readable text and maintain a usable page experience.
- Use structured data when it supports an existing Search feature and accurately matches visible page content; it is not a special requirement for generative AI Search.
- Publish original, useful material, including first-hand experience where relevant. AI assistance does not remove the need for accuracy, quality, relevance, and human fact-checking.
- Avoid mass-producing pages that add no value for people; Google warns that this can violate its scaled content abuse policy.
Google says sites do not need an llms.txt file, special AI text files, extra markup, special schema.org data, or to divide content into tiny passages to appear in these features. Those tactics should not be presented as Google GEO requirements.

What Google’s Generative AI performance report can tell you
As of Google Search Console Help’s page accessed on October 7, 2026, its Generative AI performance report includes impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, date, and device dimensions. Google said the report had rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. That date describes report availability, not a performance result.
The report is impression-focused. An impression is not a click, visit, conversion, or revenue figure, so it cannot by itself establish whether AI Search improved or harmed a business outcome.
- The chart aggregates at property level unless you apply a URL filter.
- Table totals can differ because aggregation changes with the selected dimension.
- The latest data may be preliminary, and the report remains subject to the usual Search Console limits.
For outcomes such as conversions or time spent, Google recommends pairing Search Console with other analytics. Treat the AI report and downstream analytics as different parts of the measurement picture, not interchangeable measures.

- Define the question and outcome. Decide whether you are comparing impressions, clicks, sessions, conversions, or revenue. Do not use “traffic” as a catch-all if the underlying measure is more specific.
- Fix the comparison scope. Record the Search Console property, page cohort, countries, device mix, and exact date windows. Keep the scope consistent across periods, and note if the pages included changed.
- Separate AI-feature impressions from other outcomes. Use the Generative AI performance report for the AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions it documents. Use suitable Search Console and analytics reports for other measures; do not infer clicks or sales from impressions.
- Record competing explanations. Note site redesigns, content changes, seasonality, campaigns, and search updates that overlap the comparison. A before-and-after difference alone does not show what caused it.
- Describe the result at the strength the data supports. A matched comparison can show an association or change over time. Claiming GEO caused a change requires evidence that addresses other plausible explanations.
If you calculate a percentage change, state the metric and period beside it: ((later-period value − earlier-period value) ÷ earlier-period value) × 100. That calculation describes a relative change; it does not establish its cause. No publisher-specific exports or numbers are presented here, so no site result can responsibly be supplied.

How to read broad claims about AI Search traffic
In 2025, Google said that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year” and that average click quality had increased. This is Google’s company-level account. It does not independently establish the effect of AI features, prove a trend for every publisher, or substitute for a site’s own Search Console and analytics figures.
An arXiv-indexed paper titled “Generative Engine Optimization: How to Dominate AI Search” reports controlled comparisons across verticals, languages, and query paraphrases, and describes differences in source mix and behavior between generative search services and traditional Google Search. That is a study-specific finding, not proof that all answer systems behave alike or a universal optimization recipe. The abstract-level information available here is not enough to support a precise, general-purpose effectiveness statistic.
Bottom line for a Google Search strategy
For Google, start with sound SEO and useful, original content—not a separate technical checklist for GEO. Treat AI responses and their supporting links as a changed presentation layer, use Search Console’s AI report for the impressions it actually measures, and use analytics for business outcomes. Any claim about your own results needs matched, clearly defined site data.
