Scope: Genshin Impact on Windows (PC), iOS on iPhone/iPad, and Android. The steps assume you’re trying a standard Bluetooth gamepad (Xbox/PlayStation-style) or a controller that shows up as a game controller to the OS.
Why a Controller Stops Working in Genshin Impact
The game relies on the platform’s controller support layer. If something changes—Windows driver updates, Bluetooth pairing state, Steam input configuration, or a new mobile OS version—your controller can stop being recognized or can map incorrectly.

Common causes include: an outdated controller driver, a duplicated or “virtual” controller from controller-mapping software, Bluetooth instability, or Genshin failing to receive input focus when a pop-up or overlay is active.
Quick Triage (Do This First on Every Device)
- Unplug/Disconnect everything else: remove other controllers, disable external input devices, and close overlay tools.
- Restart the game: fully close Genshin Impact and relaunch it after pairing/reconnecting the controller.
- Power-cycle the controller: turn it off for 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Reconnect using Bluetooth pairing state: remove the controller from the OS pairing list, then pair again.
- Check controller battery: low battery can cause partial input (only some buttons work).
If the controller still doesn’t respond, jump to your platform section.
PC (Windows) Troubleshooting
On Windows, controller issues almost always come down to device detection, driver/input mapping, or conflicts with Steam Input and third-party tools (rebinders, emulation wrappers, overlays).
Confirm Genshin Input Mode (Gamepad vs Keyboard/Mouse)
Genshin uses different UI prompts depending on last input device. If your controller inputs aren’t recognized, the game may keep expecting keyboard/mouse.
Try: click inside the game window, press a face button (A / Cross / X) and then move a thumbstick. If nothing happens, it’s not just UI focus—keep going.
Check Windows Game Controller Detection
First confirm Windows can see the controller.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices.
- Confirm the controller is connected and not listed as multiple devices (some pads show as both audio + gamepad).
- Press Win + R, type
joy.cpl, press Enter. - In Game Controllers, select your controller and click Properties.
- Move sticks and press buttons. You should see live status changes.
If Windows doesn’t detect inputs here, fix the controller/driver first; Genshin can’t work with a controller Windows can’t read.
Use Steam Input Settings (If You Play Through Steam)
If you launch Genshin through Steam, Steam Input can either help or interfere. Toggle it intentionally.
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Genshin Impact → Properties.
- Go to Controller.
- Set Steam Input to one of these approaches:
- For testing: choose Disable Steam Input.
- If you need remapping: keep Steam Input enabled but use a known good configuration.
- Click Browse Configs and pick a controller preset (for example, Xbox-style gamepad layout) if available.
- Launch the game again and test in a safe UI area (title screen menu).
If disabling Steam Input suddenly makes the controller work, keep it disabled or pick a different preset. If nothing changes, move on.

Disable Conflicting Software
These tools can “steal” controller input or create virtual controllers. If you use any of them, test with them fully closed.
- Controller remappers (common examples: DS4Windows, reWASD, antimicro tools)
- Overlay/recording apps that inject input hooks (some capture overlays)
- Macro tools
Rule of thumb: only one layer should own input. Either Windows sees the real controller directly, or Steam Input owns it—but not three systems at once.
Update Drivers and Firmware
Windows can detect a controller but still fail to deliver correct input if the driver stack is broken.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Update via Windows Update (Settings → Windows Update).
- Update controller firmware if your pad supports it (for example, Xbox Wireless Controller firmware updates through Xbox Accessories app on supported setups).
- For PlayStation controllers on PC, check the manufacturer-supported path for driver updates.
If your controller uses a wireless dongle, try swapping USB ports and avoid front-panel hubs.
Test the Controller Outside Genshin
Use a controller test or a different game to isolate the problem.
- If the controller works in other games but not Genshin, focus on Genshin-specific input settings or conflicts.
- If the controller fails everywhere, focus on detection and drivers.
iPhone and iPad (iOS) Troubleshooting
On iOS, controller compatibility and pairing stability matter more than most people expect. Some controllers work only in certain modes, and iOS can “connect” but still not provide usable gamepad input to all apps.
Make Sure Your Controller Is iOS-Compatible
Look for iOS support for your controller model (Xbox-style pads often work; some third-party pads may be limited). If possible, try the controller in a known iOS game that supports controllers.

Pair the Controller Correctly in iOS Settings
- Open Settings → Bluetooth.
- Under Other Devices, find your controller and tap Connect.
- Confirm the status changes to connected.
- Open Genshin Impact and tap the screen once to ensure the game has focus.
- Press a button and move a stick to test input.
If you pair successfully but inputs don’t register, unpair and re-pair (next section).
Reset Bluetooth and Re-Pair
- In Settings → Bluetooth, find the controller in connected/paired devices.
- Tap the i icon and choose Forget This Device.
- Toggle Bluetooth Off, wait 10 seconds, toggle On.
- Put the controller in pairing mode and pair again.
After re-pairing, restart Genshin. Don’t just return to the home screen—fully close and relaunch.
Check Genshin iOS Controller Options and Input Focus
Genshin typically shows controller-ready UI when a compatible gamepad is detected. If you see touch-only prompts, the game may not be receiving controller input.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Tap the game screen to ensure it’s the active app.
- Avoid having iOS overlays open (Bluetooth pairing panels, volume controls, or system pop-ups).
Low Power Mode, Background Apps, and Battery Settings
Power management can cause timing issues that look like “controller not working.”
- Check Settings → Battery → turn off Low Power Mode.
- Close background apps and relaunch Genshin.
If the controller works for a minute then stops, suspect Bluetooth stability or power saving behavior.
Android Troubleshooting
Android controller problems usually come from Bluetooth pairing quirks, overlay apps, or Android not mapping the gamepad to the correct input profile for Genshin.
Confirm Compatibility and Controller Mode
Some controllers have modes (DirectInput/ XInput-like, Nintendo/Android modes, or switchable profiles). If your pad has a mode switch, set it to the most standard “gamepad/controller” mode.

Pair via Bluetooth and Verify in Android Settings
- Open Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Bluetooth.
- Pair the controller and confirm it connects.
- Go to Settings → Controllers or Game controllers (wording varies by manufacturer).
- Look for a gamepad entry and verify it’s active.
If Android shows the device but buttons don’t register, the issue is deeper than Genshin.
Fix Bluetooth Jitter and Input Lag
Jitter feels like “buttons don’t work,” especially when Genshin menus require precise timing.
- Move closer to your phone/tablet (within ~1–2 meters) during testing.
- Turn off other heavy Bluetooth devices (audio receivers) temporarily.
- Switch Bluetooth off and on after you connect Genshin.
Clear App/Overlay Conflicts
Overlay apps are a frequent culprit on Android.
- Screen recorders
- Performance boosters
- Custom keymapper apps
- Ad blockers or “floating tools”
Disable overlays for testing, then reboot the device if the controller still behaves inconsistently.
Controller Works in Menus but Not in Game
This pattern often means input focus changes when the game loads into the world.
- Start Genshin and test controller input on the title screen.
- When the world loads, press a controller button immediately after the first input prompt.
- If it fails, fully close Genshin and relaunch (don’t rely on resume).
Also check that your Android “game mode” or “focus mode” isn’t forcing different input handling.
Common Symptoms and What to Try
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | What to Try |
|---|---|---|
| Controller connects, but no buttons do anything | Windows/iOS/Android isn’t delivering controller input to the game | Test in joy.cpl on Windows; re-pair Bluetooth on iOS/Android; disable Steam Input or conflicting remappers |
| Only some buttons work (e.g., sticks work, face buttons don’t) | Wrong controller mapping/profile | On Steam, switch configs; disable custom remapping tools; try a different preset layout |
| Works in menus, fails after loading a domain/world | Input focus change or overlay conflict | Tap screen once for focus; close overlays; restart the game after reconnecting the controller |
| Random button presses or stuck movement | Stick drift, bad pairing, or software interference | Test controller drift in OS controller properties; recalibrate if available; re-pair and restart |
| Controller works for a minute then stops | Battery/power or Bluetooth instability | Charge controller; disable Low Power Mode; reduce Bluetooth range; restart pairing |
Comparing Controller Options for Genshin Impact
Not all controllers are equally reliable across PC, iOS, and Android. If you’re buying (or switching) hardware, pick something with broad OS support and clear pairing behavior.
Xbox Wireless Controller (Bluetooth or Wireless)
Typically has strong compatibility on both Windows and many mobile setups. It’s a good baseline test controller—if it fails, the issue is likely configuration or OS input focus.
PlayStation DualSense/DualShock (via supported PC method)
Works well when the right driver/path is used on PC. On mobile, compatibility depends on your controller model and iOS/Android support for gamepad input.

These can work great, but they’re also more likely to have partial support, odd button mappings, or mode switches. If possible, verify in Windows joy.cpl (PC) or a controller-supported mobile game (iOS/Android) first.
FAQs
Why does my controller work on the title screen but not in-game?
That usually points to input focus changes, a conflicting overlay, or controller mapping that only applies to menus. Reconnect the controller, fully restart Genshin, and disable overlays/remapping tools.
Does Genshin Impact support controller remapping on mobile?
Android and iOS vary by device and controller. Genshin may accept standard controller mappings but can ignore remap layers that don’t present the gamepad as a recognized input device. For Android, disable keymapper overlays to test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I tell if it’s my controller or the game?
Use OS-level testing (Windows joy.cpl) and a second game app. If the controller fails system tests or fails every other app, it’s the controller/driver; if it only fails in Genshin, it’s configuration or conflict.
Steam Input disabled, controller still doesn’t work—what then?
On Windows, check joy.cpl first. Then disable other controller tools (DS4Windows/reWASD/macros) and check for multiple controller profiles. If it still fails only in Genshin, try launching without any overlays running.
My controller drifts—can that be causing Genshin issues?
Yes. Drift can look like stuck movement or constant input. Recalibrate in OS controller settings (or the vendor tool), then retest in Genshin.
Bottom Line
A “controller not working” problem is almost always fixable once you confirm three things: the OS detects your controller correctly, you’re not feeding the game conflicting input layers (Steam Input/remappers/overlays), and your pairing is stable (especially on iOS/Android).
