Genius Builds a Computer Inside Minecraft That Can Run Its Own Games

CHUNGUS2 turns Minecraft Redstone into a working computer, complete with CPU, RAM and graphics, then uses it to run games and a Minecraft display inside the game.

Yes—Minecraft can run a version of Minecraft inside itself. The project, called CHUNGUS2, is a working computer assembled from Redstone and other in-game components. Its creator, sammyuri, built the CPU, while Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow helped the team get Minecraft running on it. This is virtual circuitry and computer science inside a game, not a conventional PC hidden in a game world.

What CHUNGUS2 actually is

CHUNGUS2 is a Redstone computer built inside Minecraft. Its circuitry includes a processor, memory and graphics hardware, with switches and logic structures arranged to perform the same broad jobs as components in a physical computer.

The design adapts ideas from real-world memory and graphics processing to Minecraft logic. Redstone signals move through the build, temporary states are stored in memory, and the graphics system turns program data into an image on an in-game display.

The reported specifications

The available descriptions do not present one perfectly matching specification sheet, so each figure needs its source attached.

How a Minecraft computer runs a game

1. Redstone provides the logic

Redstone components act as switches, signal paths and logic gates. By combining them into larger structures, the builders create operations that can add, compare, store and route data.

2. The CPU coordinates operations

CHUNGUS2’s processor reads instructions, works with values and sends results to the rest of the machine. PCWorld reports an 8-bit design clocked at 1 hertz, an extremely constrained scale compared with ordinary computers.

3. RAM holds working data

The reported 256 bytes of RAM provide storage for program state and intermediate values. That limitation forces programs and graphics data to be designed around a tiny memory budget.

4. Graphics hardware produces the image

The graphics elements translate stored data into pixels on the in-game display. This is what lets the machine show a Minecraft scene rather than merely proving that Redstone can calculate numbers.

5. Programs become playable demonstrations

PCWorld describes interchangeable 2D programs including Tetris and Snake. The same underlying computer can therefore run different game logic instead of being wired for only one demonstration.

Why it needs a specialized server

CHUNGUS2 does not run at ordinary playable speed on a vanilla Minecraft server. Minecraft.net says the team used the Minecraft High Performance Redstone Server to accelerate Redstone processes by thousands of times, because complex circuits otherwise take too long to execute.

That acceleration is part of the engineering solution, not evidence that the in-game machine has desktop-computer performance. The reported 1 hertz clock remains a description of the build; the server changes how quickly Minecraft can simulate its circuitry.

Who built it

sammyuri created the CHUNGUS2 CPU. Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow joined the effort to get Minecraft running on the computer. Minecraft.net identifies sammyuri as the project’s Redstone enthusiast and creator.

Sammyuri summarized the appeal with the familiar challenge, “You know the classic thing that anything can run DOOM? Well, Minecraft probably can as well.” The project also reflects a less technical requirement: “If you start a project you have to want to finish it.”

What makes the feat significant

  • It is a complete computing system in the game’s own materials: CPU, RAM and graphics are represented as working Redstone structures.
  • It demonstrates computation under severe constraints: an 8-bit processor, 1 hertz clock and 256 bytes of reported RAM leave little room for waste.
  • It separates hardware from software: interchangeable programs such as Tetris and Snake can run on the same machine.
  • It shows the importance of simulation: a high-performance Redstone server is needed to make complex execution practical.

What this project does—and does not—prove

CHUNGUS2 proves that Minecraft’s Redstone system can be organized into a programmable computer capable of rendering and running game logic. It does not establish ordinary real-time Minecraft play on an unmodified server, nor does footage alone provide an independent performance benchmark.

Minecraft has hosted other Redstone computers and simple games. Minecraft’s official “In Deep Thought” history and PC Gamer’s separate coverage provide broader context, but those projects should not be confused with CHUNGUS2’s Minecraft-in-Minecraft demonstration.

How to explore the idea yourself

Readers who want to learn the underlying concepts can start with Redstone logic-gate tutorials and community projects. Minecraft.net cites Mumbo Jumbo tutorials, QSmally’s QCPU and Open Redstone Engineers as inspirations or resources associated with sammyuri’s learning path. Building a small adder, memory cell or display controller is a more realistic first step than attempting a full computer.
