The Geneva Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Candidates’ Night in Geneva, Ohio, on October 4, 2023, ahead of that November’s election. Candidates discussed local races and ballot issues; the longest reported exchange focused on the four candidates for the Geneva Area City Schools board. This is a retrospective account of the event, not an election-results report.
How the Geneva Candidates’ Night forum worked
According to the Star Beacon report republished by Yahoo News on October 6, 2023, candidates in contested races each had three minutes to introduce themselves. Audience members could submit written questions for the moderator to ask all candidates. Candidates in uncontested races and advocates for ballot issues also received three minutes to speak.
The school-board race drew the evening’s most extensive discussion
The report describes the discussion among four Geneva Area City Schools board candidates as the evening’s most extensive: G. Joseph Colucci, incumbent Sarah Fisher, Michele Krieg and Brock Pierson. Their topics included management and labor relations, staff departures, a permanent-improvement levy, Superintendent Terri Hrina-Treharn’s role, a possible athletic facility and board-member training. The report records candidates’ arguments at a forum; it does not independently establish the accuracy of their claims about district leadership.
What the candidates said
Colucci said he wanted to address public confidence in district leadership: “I want to help eliminate the crisis of confidence the public has with the school board and superintendent,” he said.

- Fisher said 26 resumes were considered in the superintendent search that led to Hrina-Treharn’s hiring.
