Generative Engine Optimization: What the Data Actually Supports in 2026

GEO is worth measuring, but no universal playbook guarantees AI citations. Here’s what Google says and what recent studies show about source selection and variability.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a useful label for trying to make a website visible in AI-generated search answers, but current evidence does not support a universal formula for earning citations. For Google Search, Google says the work is still SEO: create useful, distinctive content and keep foundational SEO practices in place. Studies show that AI features can draw on different sources from ordinary search—and can vary between runs—so the sensible approach is to improve your site and measure visibility repeatedly rather than expect a guaranteed citation boost.

What is generative engine optimization?

GEO describes efforts to improve a site’s visibility in answers produced by generative search features and assistants. Depending on the product, visibility may mean a page is cited, a brand is mentioned, or a site earns an impression in a search feature. Those signals are not interchangeable: a citation is not necessarily a click, and an impression does not establish business impact.

Google recognizes GEO and answer engine optimization (AEO) as terms people use for visibility work in AI search, but its guidance for Google Search frames the work as SEO. Google describes its generative features as drawing on Search systems to find relevant, up-to-date pages, then reviewing information from those pages. It also describes “query fan-out”: generating related searches to find additional information. See Google’s guidance on AI features and your website.

“From Google’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”

That statement applies to Google’s search experience; it is not a rule for every AI assistant or generative search product.

Does GEO actually work?

The evidence supports treating GEO as a real visibility problem worth measuring, not as a proven, repeatable set of tactics. The 2024 KDD paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” proposed ways to measure visibility in generative answers and tested text interventions. Its authors also said that how to optimize visibility remained unclear. The paper therefore establishes that the problem can be studied; it does not establish that a particular edit reliably wins citations across engines or over time. Read the paper.

A 2026 SIGIR study, “How Generative AI Disrupts Search: An Empirical Study of Google Search, Gemini, and AI Overviews,” compared traditional Google Search with AI Overviews and Gemini using a public benchmark of 11,500 user queries. It found substantial differences in selected sources and reported average source-set Jaccard similarity below 0.2 in its comparisons. That score describes the study’s comparisons, not a universal score for all AI search.

The same study reported AI Overviews for 51.5% of representative real-user queries and 65.6% of all queries in its broader benchmark analysis. Those rates differ because the samples and measurement definitions differ; neither is a universal current rate for AI Overview availability. The authors also found less consistency across repeated AI Overview runs and minor query edits. Results are bounded by the study’s benchmark, collection conditions, and platform versions. Taken together, these findings support a careful conclusion: visibility can differ by platform, query, and run. They do not show that any specific on-page GEO tactic causes durable gains across platforms.

How do I optimize my site for AI Overviews?

Google’s advice is to focus on useful, unique, non-commodity content and foundational SEO. Its May 15, 2026 announcement introduced a guide for website owners, SEOs, and developers and highlighted content quality, SEO fundamentals, and myths around AEO and GEO. This is official guidance, not a promise that a page change will earn an AI Overview citation. Read Google’s announcement.

For a practical approach, make pages genuinely valuable to their intended readers, easy for people to understand, and technically accessible to Search. Add original insight rather than rephrasing material already widely available. Continue applying relevant SEO fundamentals. These are grounded recommendations, but the sources do not establish that a particular word count, formatting trick, or schema guarantees a citation.

How do I track whether AI search cites my website?

Use Google Search Console for Google visibility

Google announced a dedicated Search Console view for impressions in generative AI features on Search—including AI Overviews and AI Mode—and generative AI features in Discover. Google says those data are also included in overall performance reporting. This is useful for monitoring Google-specific visibility, but it is not a cross-platform citation report and does not by itself measure clicks, conversions, or revenue. See Google’s Search Console announcement.

Keep a repeatable observation log

For platforms or citation details not represented by that Google reporting, use a consistent observation routine. This is a practical recommendation based on the documented variability, not a validated formula for improving visibility:

  1. Choose a relevant set of queries that reflects what your intended readers may ask.
  2. For each observation, record the exact query, platform, date, and geography or locale when known.
  3. Note whether the feature appeared, whether your URL was cited or your brand mentioned, and the context of that appearance.
  4. Repeat observations on different dates and, where useful, across platforms; do not infer a lasting change from a single appearance or disappearance.
  5. Keep conventional Search impressions and clicks distinct from AI-feature impressions, citations, and business outcomes.

This separation matters because the available signals answer different questions: a rank or impression indicates visibility on a particular surface; a citation records inclusion in an answer; and neither alone proves a visit or a commercial result.

What the evidence does—and does not—let you conclude

  • Supported: Google’s generative Search features build on Search systems, and Google recommends useful, distinctive content alongside SEO fundamentals.
  • Supported: Generative products and traditional search can select different sources; study results also show variation between runs and query edits.
  • Not established: A universal GEO checklist, a guaranteed citation gain from a particular tactic, or a durable uplift that applies across platforms.
  • Not established: That Google-specific impression reporting measures citations across other AI products or demonstrates traffic, conversions, or revenue.

Google’s guidance concerns Google Search. The academic findings are specific to their datasets, collection dates, platform versions, and methods; they should inform cautious testing, not timeless predictions about every generative system.
