Generative Engine Optimization: How It Works Alongside SEO

GEO can help useful pages become more visible in generated search answers, but it is not a guaranteed citation formula or a replacement for SEO.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making useful, well-supported pages more likely to be found, represented, and cited in generated search answers. It matters because AI search can synthesize information instead of showing only a list of links. But GEO does not replace SEO, and no tactic guarantees a citation. For Google, the practical answer to “How do I get my website cited in AI search results?” starts with the same foundations: create content worth surfacing, make it accessible to Search, and measure the outcome in the relevant platform.

What GEO means in AI-first search

Generative engine optimization is a research and practitioner term for improving a site’s visibility in responses produced by generative search systems. Those systems retrieve information and compose an answer, sometimes with links or inline citations to sources. A page’s visibility can therefore depend not only on whether it ranks, but also on whether it is selected, how it is represented, and where or how prominently its citation appears.

Google describes its generative AI features as using retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding, and query fan-out: a model may generate related searches to gather context for the original question. Other search and answer products can retrieve and compose information differently, so Google’s guidance applies to its own Search features rather than serving as a universal playbook.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google Search Central puts it plainly: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on core Search ranking and quality systems. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear as a Search snippet to be eligible for Google’s generative AI features.

Eligibility is not a promise of exposure. Google also says: “Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.” GEO is best understood as an extension of sound SEO and audience-focused publishing—not a separate ranking system publishers can reliably manipulate.

What helps a page earn visibility in Google’s AI features?

Publish something useful and distinct

Google recommends original perspective, first-hand experience where relevant, reliable people-first material, and content that adds value beyond what is already widely available. A rewritten version of existing pages or a large set of near-duplicates gives readers little reason to choose your page. Make the page answer a real question with accurate information, relevant detail, and support for important claims.

Keep the page accessible to Search

Check that the page is public and crawlable, that your site’s technical SEO is functioning, and that the page can be indexed and shown with a Search snippet. These are eligibility conditions, not guarantees that Google will crawl, index, or display it. Google’s guidance on generative AI features in Search explains the requirements and how they relate to ordinary Search.

Organize for people, not an imagined AI formula

Clear headings and readable sections help people navigate a page. But Google says there is no ideal page length and no requirement to break content into tiny chunks for AI. As Google Search Central puts it: “There’s no ideal page length, and in the end, make pages for your audience, not just for generative AI search.” Choose structure and length based on the question and the detail needed to answer it.

Use media and structured data when they fit

Useful images or video can be surfaced when relevant to a search. Structured data remains worthwhile for its ordinary Search purposes when it accurately describes the page and follows Google’s rules; Google does not require special GEO schema or structured data to appear in generative AI features. Do not add markup that is irrelevant or inconsistent with what readers can see.

Keep business and product details current

For local businesses and ecommerce, accurate public information matters. Google points businesses to Google Business Profile and Merchant Center to manage information that may appear in Search and AI responses. Treat those records as part of keeping the facts about your business, products, and availability consistent.

Should you use AI to create content for GEO?

AI can help with research or structuring, but publishing at scale without adding value may violate Google’s scaled content abuse policy. Generated text can also be inaccurate. Google Search Central warns that “Generative AI outputs may contain inaccuracies (also known as hallucinations).” Have a knowledgeable person verify facts, sources, and claims before publication, and make sure the final page provides value rather than simply expanding the volume of content.

Google’s advice is specific to its Search policies. Do not assume that every other answer engine uses the same rules or signals unless that platform documents them.

Which GEO shortcuts should you avoid?

For Google’s generative features, the official guidance does not support several popular shortcuts. Google says it does not use llms.txt or similar files as special Search signals, does not require content chunking, and does not require rewriting pages specifically for AI. It also discourages inauthentic mentions. These points are not evidence about how every other platform works; they are Google’s stated position for Google Search.

Be wary of any promise that a particular format, file, mention strategy, or technical tweak will guarantee a citation. Google says: “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” External tools may help organize work, but they cannot report Google’s private ranking signals.

How can you measure GEO performance?

Start by defining the outcome you care about: a citation, a mention, a linked source, visits from a platform, or a broader visibility score. These are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable. A page can be cited without generating a visit, and an aggregate score does not necessarily reveal how often people reach your site.

For Google’s own generative features, Google recommends the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It is a view of performance in Google’s features, not a measurement of visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or every AI assistant. When using an outside monitoring service, check which platforms it covers, what it counts, and whether it records the same prompt, locale, and date conditions across checks. Prefer reports that show the cited source URLs and practical findings over an unexplained score.

What the GEO research does—and does not—show

Aggarwal and coauthors introduced GEO and the GEO-bench in a paper presented at ACM SIGKDD 2024. In their evaluated settings, tested methods improved visibility by up to 40% across benchmark queries; the paper also reports an improvement of up to 37% on Perplexity in its real-world engine evaluation. These are maximum experimental results, not average forecasts, guaranteed business outcomes, or evidence that the same changes will work across today’s systems and topics. The authors note that effectiveness varies by domain. Read the GEO paper published in the Proceedings of ACM SIGKDD 2024 for its methods and experimental scope.

How to approach GEO in practice

  1. Choose a specific audience question. Identify the need your page will meet and what it can contribute that existing answers do not.
  2. Build a reliable, useful page. Add original insight or relevant first-hand experience, verify claims, and organize the answer with clear headings and appropriate supporting media.
  3. Confirm Search eligibility. Make sure the page is crawlable, indexable, and eligible for a Search snippet; treat this as a prerequisite, not a promise of selection.
  4. Maintain relevant business information. If the page concerns a local business or products, keep applicable Google Business Profile or Merchant Center details accurate.
  5. Track a defined outcome. Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report for Google’s generative features, and assess other platforms with clearly defined, repeatable measures rather than assuming one report covers all AI search.
  6. Review and improve based on evidence. Update pages when facts or user needs change. Do not adopt a tactic merely because it is labeled “GEO”; judge it by reader value and measured results.
