Generative AI and traditional digital art tools support different kinds of creative control. A drawing or painting app lets you make and revise marks directly; a generative system creates or modifies visual material from prompts and references, leaving you to guide, select, and refine the results. Neither is a universal replacement for the other, and some creative apps combine both approaches. The practical choice depends on the work you need to do, the edits you must retain, and your comfort with each tool’s data and rights policies.
What is the practical difference?

These are workflow tendencies, not guarantees about every application. Some software blends generation with ordinary drawing, selection, masking, and compositing tools. Check how a particular feature works and what it leaves editable before building a project around it.

How should creators choose between them?
Choose direct tools when control and targeted editing matter most
If the image depends on deliberate linework, a specific composition, or many precise revisions, direct drawing and editing tools may make it easier to control each change. Layers and other project structures can also help keep parts of an image separately adjustable, though editability depends on how the work is organized and exported.
Consider generation when exploration is the goal
Generative tools can help explore visual directions through prompts and references. They can be useful when you want to compare possibilities rather than specify every mark from the outset. The trade-off is that generated results may not match your intent, and a prompt does not automatically provide the fine-grained control or editable parts you need. Plan to review and revise the result.

Use a mixed workflow when it fits the project
A creator can use generation for an early concept or a particular visual element, then continue drawing, painting, compositing, or editing directly. Another project may call for direct creation throughout. Treat the choice as a decision about methods and control, not a test of whether a creator is “for” or “against” technology.
What should you check about editability and provenance?
Find out what remains adjustable
Before committing to a tool, check whether it preserves layers or other separable elements, whether a generated area can be revised without changing the rest, and whether the result can be exported in a form your later workflow can use. A flattened export may be harder to revise than a project that retains its components. Capabilities vary by application and feature, so do not assume a generated image will remain editable in the way a layered illustration does.

Understand what Content Credentials can and cannot show
Adobe says certain Firefly exports carry Content Credentials indicating AI use. Its FAQ says credentials can include information such as creation date, tools, and edits. These are metadata attached to a file, not proof of authorship by themselves; the available information does not establish that every platform preserves credentials when an image is uploaded or transformed. What should you know about training data and your own work?
Training-data policies differ by provider. Look for clear statements about the material used to train a model, whether customer work is used, and what controls or choices are available. A vendor’s policy describes that vendor’s practices; it does not establish how another service handles data.

Adobe says Firefly models are trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain works where copyright has expired. Adobe says it compensates Adobe Stock contributors whose work is used for training, does not mine the web for Firefly training, and has never trained Firefly on customer content. These are Adobe’s representations about its service, not a description of generative AI tools generally. Adobe’s Firefly approach page also describes safeguards intended to prevent infringing output and says Adobe provides IP indemnification for enterprise customers. That enterprise statement is not a general guarantee for every user or every output.
Adobe’s creator preference has limited support and trade-offs
Adobe’s help page, last updated September 3, 2025, describes a preference embedded in Content Credentials that asks supported models not to train on or use a creator’s work. The page names Adobe Firefly and Spawning as supporting it; it is not a universal opt-out across AI services. Adobe says setting the preference requires a verified name or connected social account. It also says enabling it prevents Adobe Stock upload and can block use of the work in Firefly reference tools. Read Adobe’s creator preference guidance and weigh those workflow effects before enabling it.

Can you copyright AI-assisted art?
There is no useful one-word answer based only on whether AI appeared in the workflow. The U.S. Copyright Office’s Part 2, published January 29, 2025, addresses copyrightability of outputs created using generative AI. The status page identifies human authorship and output copyrightability as part of that inquiry, but the materials cited here do not establish a comprehensive rule for every combination of prompting, selection, editing, and human-created material.
For a creator, the practical point is to distinguish the generated material from the human contribution and keep records of meaningful creative decisions and revisions. Do not assume that prompting alone is sufficient for copyright protection, or that every work involving AI will receive the same treatment. This is a general U.S.-oriented explanation, not legal advice; consult the current law and the full Copyright Office materials for a particular work. The Office’s Artificial Intelligence Study status page lists the reports and their scope.

Does using a commercial AI tool remove infringement risk?
No vendor’s commercial-use language should be treated as a universal legal guarantee. Output copyrightability, the source material used to train a model, possible similarity to existing works, and the terms governing a specific service are distinct questions. Adobe describes Firefly safeguards and enterprise IP indemnification, but those statements do not establish that every Firefly output is non-infringing or resolve legal questions for other tools.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s May 9, 2025 Part 3 on generative AI training is explicitly a pre-publication version. It discusses potential benefits and harms raised in the training debate, including possible substitution for training works and dilution of markets for similar works; it also notes that licensing may affect fair-use analysis. Those are issues considered in the report, not a court ruling settling the legality of all AI training. The Office says a final Part 3 will be published in the future. Read the Part 3 pre-publication report alongside the current status page for its scope and status.
How can you tell whether an image was made with AI?
Content Credentials may provide clues when they are present and preserved: Adobe says certain Firefly exports include credentials indicating AI use, and credentials can carry information about tools and edits. Their absence does not establish that an image was made without AI, and their presence is not, on its own, proof of who authored the work. Credentials can also be lost when files are processed or shared through platforms that do not preserve them. Treat metadata as one source of provenance information, not a complete verification method.

Make the decision around your priorities
- Choose for control: Prefer direct drawing and editing when you need to specify and revise visual details precisely.
- Choose for exploration: Consider generation when prompt- and reference-guided variations serve the task and you are willing to evaluate and refine results.
- Choose for editability: Inspect the project structure and export options before relying on a tool for work that will need later revisions.
- Choose for policy fit: Read the provider’s statements about training sources, customer content, and creator controls rather than assuming all services follow the same practices.
- Choose for provenance: Check what metadata a tool exports and whether the places you share work preserve it.
- Choose for personal values: It is valid to avoid generative features, use them selectively, or favor tools whose policies better fit your preferences.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s status page dates Part 1 of its AI study to July 31, 2024, Part 2 to January 29, 2025, and the pre-publication Part 3 to May 9, 2025; it says the final Part 3 is forthcoming. The page also reports that the Office received over 10,000 comments by the December 2023 deadline. That count is the number of comments submitted, not a poll or measure of public opinion. The Office’s analysis and the law continue to develop, so treat specific rights questions as context-dependent rather than settled by a tool’s marketing language.
