Generative AI can help marketing teams research and structure content, create or adapt advertising assets, and assemble ad variations for campaigns. It does not remove the need for editorial judgment, rights checks, or human review—and platform features are not proof of better results. The practical approach is to use AI for bounded production tasks, then check quality and performance against your own goals.
How can generative AI be used in marketing?
Its most useful roles fall into three connected workflows: preparing content, producing and adapting campaign creative, and using advertising platforms to combine or optimise assets. In each case, AI can help with production or organisation; people remain responsible for deciding what is accurate, distinctive, appropriate to publish, and worth measuring.

- Content creation: Research a topic, organise source material, develop an outline, or produce draft variations for a human editor to assess.
- Campaign optimisation: Let an advertising platform assemble combinations of supplied assets or use its built-in AI capabilities to support campaign goals.
- Creative automation: Generate or meaningfully adapt assets, such as turning a still product photo into an animation or creating imagery for an ad.
These are documented uses, not a promise of a particular uplift. No general performance gain, time saving, or conversion improvement is established by the sources cited here.

Google Search Central says, “Generative AI can be particularly useful when researching a topic, and to add structure to original content.” The important distinction is between using AI to help develop useful work and publishing large amounts of material that adds little for readers.

A reviewable content workflow
- Set the reader’s need. Define what the page must help someone understand or do before asking a tool to draft or organise material.
- Use AI for bounded support. Ask it to organise supplied information, suggest an outline, or create draft wording and alternatives. Treat output as material to review, not as verified fact.
- Check claims against reliable sources. Confirm factual details, dates, product behavior, and any claims that could affect a reader’s decision. Remove unsupported assertions.
- Add editorial value. Bring in relevant expertise, explanation, examples, and context. Review the work for accuracy, quality, relevance, and a clear purpose.
- Review the supporting details. Check metadata and image alt text for accuracy and usefulness, too; Google’s guidance applies to these elements as well as page copy.
Google warns that using generative AI to produce many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policy. Its guidance does not establish that AI-written content receives a ranking advantage. For ecommerce, Google also points to Merchant Center requirements for AI-generated images and product data; check the current Merchant Center guidance before publishing those materials.
What can AI do for campaigns and creative?
Advertising automation can operate at the asset-combination level as well as the asset-production level. Google describes built-in AI features for campaign scale and optimisation, including developing creative assets. Its examples include animating still product photos and using generated imagery in Performance Max. Google also describes responsive search ad AI as finding combinations of headlines, descriptions, and other assets to serve against campaign goals.

That explains what the platform can do, not what an advertiser should expect to achieve. Google’s feature descriptions are not independent evidence that a campaign will perform better, and there is no universal result established here. Evaluate any campaign against the advertiser’s own objective and a defined comparison, rather than treating an automated combination or platform recommendation as proof of success.
Keep creative automation inside clear boundaries
- Supply assets and source information your team is entitled to use.
- Review generated or edited creative for factual accuracy, brand fit, and whether it represents the product or offer honestly.
- Check how the platform combines assets and whether the resulting creative is suitable for the intended audience and placement.
- Document the goal and comparison used to judge campaign results; do not generalise an individual result without its owner, date, geography, method, and denominator.
What do Google and Meta document?
The available platform descriptions cover different features and disclosure approaches. They do not establish a cross-platform performance ranking or guarantee that the same controls are available in every account or region.

| Platform | Documented capability or disclosure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search | Search Central describes generative AI as useful for research and structuring original content. | Google warns that scaled pages without added user value may violate its policy; the guidance does not promise a ranking boost. |
| Google Ads | Google documents AI-assisted campaign and creative features, including generated imagery, image animation, and asset combinations for responsive search ads. | These are product capabilities, not independent evidence of typical performance gains. |
| Google ad disclosures | Google says designated AI-generated or edited assets can be identified in the “How this ad was made” section of My Ad Center, accessible globally. An overlay may also appear on ads in some geographies, including the EU, India, and New York. | Available labels and on-ad overlays depend on the applicable feature and geography; platform settings do not establish legal compliance. |
| Meta ads | Meta’s announcement describes labels for images or video created or significantly edited with Meta’s own advertiser creative tools. It also describes a rollout of “About this ad” and detection, using industry-standard signals, for certain ads made or edited with third-party AI tools. | The announcement was published February 3, 2025, and updated June 1, 2026. Meta says the experience may vary in some regions due to legal requirements; availability and behavior can change. |
Google’s relevant guidance includes Search Central’s generative AI content guidance, last updated December 10, 2025; Google Ads Help’s material on generated images and AI content labels; and Google Ads’ February 2025 description of increased asset flexibility in AI-powered Search ads. Google’s announcement of new AI labels for Ads is dated July 9, 2026. Meta’s disclosure details are from its announcement, updated June 1, 2026.
Do AI-generated ads need to be labelled?
There is no single yes-or-no answer that applies to every ad, platform, asset, and jurisdiction. Platform disclosure features are evolving, and a label shown by a service does not by itself establish that an advertiser has satisfied every applicable legal obligation.

What safeguards should a marketing team use?
Accuracy, brand fit, and audience trust
Assign a person to review content and creative before publication. Check factual claims, product details, tone, and whether the asset could mislead the audience. For content, ensure the final page adds value rather than merely multiplying pages or rephrasing material.
Privacy, consent, and intellectual property
Review whether the team has permission to use the data, images, names, likenesses, and other source material supplied to a tool or used in an asset. Google’s Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy identifies violations of privacy and intellectual property rights as prohibited; its example includes personal data and biometrics used without legally required consent. That policy is a product policy, not a complete legal analysis for every jurisdiction. Use data minimisation and obtain appropriate consent and rights clearance as part of the workflow.
Disclosure and record keeping
Know which platform controls apply to the asset and target geography, and recheck them before launch because features and rules can change. Keep a record of source assets, human review, and the campaign goal so the team can explain how the work was made and how its results were judged.
How should you evaluate an AI marketing tool or workflow?
There is no independent, comparable vendor test or universal performance ranking established here. Compare candidates against the work your team actually needs to do, and pilot them on a defined task before expanding use.
- Workflow fit: Does it support research and drafting, creative generation or adaptation, campaign asset assembly, or another specific task you need?
- Control: Can your team use approved source assets, review and edit output, and keep the result consistent with its brand?
- Integration: Does it connect to the data and campaign processes the team needs, and can the team understand what information is being used?
- Privacy and rights: Are the data practices, permissions, and intellectual-property terms suitable for the material you intend to use?
- Transparency: Can you identify and manage the platform’s disclosure controls for the relevant asset and geography?
- Evidence against your goal: Define the outcome to measure and the comparison before a pilot. Report results with their scope and method rather than presenting one campaign’s outcome as a general benchmark.
What is established—and what is not?
Official Google materials establish examples of AI-assisted content research and structuring, advertising asset creation, and automated asset combinations. Google and Meta also describe disclosure features for certain AI-generated or edited ads. Those sources do not establish a general marketing performance uplift, a reliable time-saving figure, or a winner among vendors. Treat product capabilities as options to evaluate, not as proof of business results.
