You can generate a server-rendered SVG map without adopting a full map renderer: convert geographic features such as GeoJSON into projected SVG paths, place those paths in an <svg> document, and return the serialized markup from your server. “No map library” can mean no interactive mapping framework, which is practical; it cannot mean that longitude and latitude can be drawn directly as screen coordinates. Projection and geometry handling are still required.
What “no map library” means for an SVG map
A full map renderer typically handles more than drawing shapes: it may manage map styles, tiles, camera movement, and interactive rendering. A static SVG needs only the geometry-to-path portion of that work. You can use a projection and path-generation tool without adopting a full map viewer, or implement those pieces yourself if you mean literally no geographic library.

GeoJSON coordinates describe geographic locations, not positions on a flat drawing canvas. Before they can form a useful map, they must be projected into planar coordinates and converted into SVG path data. D3 Geo provides projections and a geographic path generator for this purpose; its documentation describes the projection and path-generation workflow at D3 Geo.

| Approach | Output | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| D3 Geo projection and path generation | SVG path data you can place in custom markup | Applications that need feature-level control over SVG structure and styling | You still need to choose a projection, handle input geometry, and construct or serialize the SVG document. |
geo2svg command-line conversion |
SVG path output from GeoJSON | A conversion workflow where a command-line tool is appropriate | It is a geometry conversion route, not an interactive map renderer; configure dimensions, precision, and styling for the intended output. |
| MapLibre GL JS | Interactive browser-rendered map using WebGL and vector tiles | Maps that need tiles, camera behavior, or browser interaction | This is a full browser mapping library, not a direct server-side SVG path generator. |
| Martin server-side rendering | Rendered map image from a MapLibre style | Server-generated static render when using MapLibre styles is important | Rendering has deployment constraints and does not provide the same custom SVG path markup workflow. |
| Mapbox Static Images API | Static map image | A static image is sufficient and client-side mapping software is not required | The result is an image, not editable custom SVG markup; it also depends on a hosted API. |
The geo2svg command-line reference documents conversion from GeoJSON. It can emit one path for a whole input or, when given newline-delimited input, a path element for each feature. Its options include width, height, precision, and point radius. D3 Geo and geo2svg are therefore useful when SVG paths—not tiles or a raster snapshot—are the required output.

Build the server-side SVG pipeline
- Obtain the geographic features. Use GeoJSON or another format that you can convert into geographic features. Decide whether you need all features or only a subset, since each included feature may become a path.
- Choose a projection for the map’s geography and purpose. A projection maps the globe to a plane; its choice affects shape and position. Configure the projection for the intended output dimensions rather than treating raw longitude and latitude as pixel coordinates.
- Generate paths. Use a geographic path generator such as D3 Geo’s, use
geo2svgfor a command-line GeoJSON workflow, or implement the projection and path construction yourself. The last option removes the library dependency, not the underlying geometry work. - Create the SVG document. Put the resulting path data inside an
<svg>element with the appropriate dimensions and view box. Add feature identifiers or other properties as attributes if the server-side styling or downstream use requires them. - Apply styles and return the markup. Set SVG attributes such as
fillandstroke, using feature properties when different features need different styles. Serialize the document and return it from the server with an SVG content type.
Keeping the geometry conversion separate from document construction makes it easier to test the projection and the SVG markup independently. It also leaves the output as ordinary SVG paths that can be styled or edited without adding browser map behavior.
Handle projection and geometry edge cases
Do not draw longitude and latitude as canvas coordinates
Geographic coordinates need a projection before they can be used as planar drawing positions. A simplistic direct mapping may produce a picture for a limited, carefully chosen extent, but it does not replace projection and can distort the map or place features incorrectly. Select a projection suitable for the region and purpose.

Check winding order and polygon holes
Polygon rings encode which areas are interior and which are holes. D3 Geo documents a winding-order convention that differs from GeoJSON RFC 7946. When converting data or mixing tooling, inspect polygon winding and holes; a mismatch can cause shapes to be interpreted incorrectly. See the D3 Geo documentation for its conventions.
Account for antimeridian cuts
World-spanning or cross-dateline data can be split at the antimeridian in WGS84 GeoJSON. D3 Geo notes that stitching may be needed to handle these cuts. If the output includes global geography, verify how the input’s boundaries are represented and how the selected path-generation workflow treats them; otherwise, a seam or unexpected polygon edge may appear.

When a renderer or static image is a better fit
Use a browser renderer for interaction
MapLibre GL JS is a TypeScript library that uses WebGL to render interactive maps from vector tiles in a browser. Choose that kind of approach when tiles, camera movement, and interactive map behavior are requirements. Its browser rendering model is different from generating server-side SVG path markup.
Use Martin when rendering MapLibre styles on the server
Martin’s server-side raster rendering documentation describes rendering MapLibre styles, but rendering is not part of the default build: it depends on maplibre_native. The documented deployment options include full Docker and Linux releases or building with the rendering feature enabled. The documentation says rendering support is Linux-only and that static rendering is not cached. These constraints matter if you are evaluating it for a server deployment, and its output path is not the same as generating custom SVG path elements.

Use a hosted static image API when SVG markup is unnecessary
The Mapbox Static Images API can provide map images that display without a mapping library or API on the client. That can meet a requirement for a static visual, but it does not return the custom, editable SVG path markup described in this workflow.
