Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To capture the page currently visible in a Selenium browser, use TakesScreenshot and save the returned file. For a full-page image, Selenium documents a separate method for Firefox: FirefoxDriver.getFullPageScreenshotAs. These methods capture rendered browser output, not the page’s HTML source.
Capture the current browser view
Selenium describes a WebDriver screenshot as a capture of the current browsing context. The standard Java pattern returns a temporary image file with OutputType.FILE; move or copy it to your chosen destination before the temporary file is removed.
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
import java.io.File;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.StandardCopyOption;
public class ScreenshotExample {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
Files.copy(screenshot.toPath(), Path.of("page.png"),
StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
This captures the current browsing context, not necessarily the entire document if it extends beyond the viewport. Selenium’s Java example uses ChromeDriver; it also uses Apache Commons IO’s FileUtils to copy the temporary file. The example above uses Java NIO instead, so Commons IO is not required.
The code assumes your project can create a working Chrome WebDriver session. Browser installation, Selenium dependency configuration, and driver management depend on your environment and are not configured by this capture snippet.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Capture a full page in Firefox
Selenium documents getFullPageScreenshotAs for Firefox. Use the Firefox-specific API when you need the whole page rather than the current browsing context:
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxDriver;
import java.io.File;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.StandardCopyOption;
public class FullPageScreenshotExample {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
FirefoxDriver driver = new FirefoxDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev");
File screenshot = driver.getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
Files.move(screenshot.toPath(),
new File("full_page_screenshot.png").toPath(),
StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
Keep this method tied to Firefox unless the official documentation for your specific driver confirms equivalent support. The API reference lists the full-page capability, but it does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for browsers, remote sessions, or other drivers.

Choose the screenshot target and output form
- Current browsing context: use
((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(...)for the normal WebDriver screenshot. - Full page: use
getFullPageScreenshotAs(...)with a driver that documents the API; the Selenium example here is Firefox-specific. - One element: Selenium supports element screenshots when you need a component rather than the page. Find the element and call its screenshot method, for example
driver.findElement(By.cssSelector(".card")).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE). - File, bytes, or Base64: Selenium’s Java
OutputTypesupports all three. A file is convenient for writing an image to disk; bytes or Base64 can fit a storage or transport workflow. Choose the form that the next step in your application expects.
Common problems and fixes
- The image shows only part of the page: the normal screenshot captures the current browsing context. Use a documented full-page API for your driver, or capture a specific element if that is the actual target.
- The screenshot file cannot be found later: Selenium returns a temporary file. Copy or move it to a stable path immediately, before the temporary file is removed.
- The Firefox full-page method is unavailable: confirm that your concrete driver exposes the full-page API. Do not assume the Firefox API works identically with Chrome or another driver.
- The browser does not open: the screenshot code runs only after a WebDriver has been created successfully. Check browser and driver setup for your environment before debugging the capture call.
- The image does not reflect expected page content: call the screenshot method after navigating to the target page and after the content you need has rendered. A screenshot records rendered browser output, not the source HTML string.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want an image from a URL without creating a Selenium browser session, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium save a screenshot as bytes or Base64 instead of a file?
Yes. Selenium’s Java OutputType supports file, byte-array, and Base64 return forms.
