For a Laravel 12 application that needs PDFs from Blade views without Node.js, Spatie’s laravel-pdf Dompdf driver is the clearest documented option: it generates PDFs in PHP and requires no external binaries. That makes it a straightforward deployment fit, not a guarantee that it is the fastest renderer. Spatie also warns that Dompdf supports less CSS than Chromium-based drivers, so test your real templates before adopting it.
Why Dompdf is the no-Node starting point
Spatie describes its DOMPDF driver as using dompdf/dompdf for pure-PHP PDF generation. Its setup documentation says the driver needs no external binaries, Node.js, or Docker. That avoids installing or operating a browser process alongside the Laravel application.

The package’s v2 requirements documentation lists PHP 8.2+ and Laravel 11+. Laravel 12 is within that stated Laravel range, but check the Composer constraints for the exact package version you install because requirements can change. See Spatie’s requirements and installation and setup.

Install and configure the Dompdf driver

Render a representative Blade view using the package’s documented workflow. The package introduction describes generating a PDF from a Blade view: Spatie’s package introduction.

Inspect the resulting PDF against the intended output, including page breaks, fonts, tables, images, and CSS. A successful installation confirms the driver is available; it does not prove that every layout or modern CSS feature will render as intended.

What “high-performance” can—and cannot—mean here
The cited official documentation does not publish comparable throughput, latency, memory, or concurrency results for Dompdf and the other drivers. It therefore does not establish that Dompdf is universally fastest, or support a speedup figure. Its documented advantage for this use case is a simpler runtime dependency profile: PDF generation in PHP without external binaries.

Performance depends on the documents and deployment. If speed or capacity matters, benchmark representative Blade documents in the target environment. Include the document complexity and output size you expect, then measure generation time, memory use, and behavior at expected concurrency. Treat those results as workload-specific; do not infer a general ranking from the fact that a driver avoids Node.js.
Check CSS and layout before choosing Dompdf
Spatie explicitly warns that Dompdf has more limited CSS support than Chromium-based drivers. The documentation does not define a universal compatibility threshold, so a feature checklist alone cannot certify a template. Build a small test view that exercises the layouts your application actually needs, generate it with the intended fonts and images, and inspect the PDF at page boundaries as well as within pages.

- Check the fonts and images used in production templates.
- Review whether key styling survives in the generated file, rather than relying on how the Blade page looks in a browser.
- If fidelity is inadequate, compare another driver using the same representative view.
Choose another driver when its dependencies or rendering model fit better
Spatie lists several drivers, but they do not share the same infrastructure requirements. The following comparison reflects the dependencies described in its documentation, not a performance ranking. Driver details are in the requirements documentation and the setup documentation.

These dependencies describe where rendering work is performed and what must be available; they do not show which option is faster for a particular application. If Dompdf’s CSS limitations block the required output, choose an alternative based on the rendering behavior you need and the infrastructure you can operate.

Return the generated PDF as a view or a download
PDF generation and the HTTP response are separate decisions. Laravel 12 documents response()->file($pathToFile) for displaying a file in the browser and response()->download($pathToFile, $name) for prompting a download. Use the response that matches what users should do with the generated file; see Laravel’s file responses documentation.
