Gen X vs. Gen Z: Making Sense of a Clash of Worlds

Gen X and Gen Z grew up amid different technologies and historical conditions, but those labels do not explain any one person’s views or behavior. The most useful way to understand a perceived “clash” is to separate life stage from shared historical context—and to look closely at what a particular comparison actually measured. Most available evidence here is U.S.-based, and it does not establish one universal conflict across work, family, culture, politics, or technology.

What’s the difference between Gen X and Gen Z?

In a familiar U.S. convention used by Pew Research Center, Generation X means people born from 1965 through 1980; Millennials are born from 1981 through 1996; and Gen Z begins in 1997. These are working boundaries, not precise scientific divisions. Pew notes that cutoff points are inexact and that other definitions exist. People near a boundary may not identify with the label assigned to their birth year.

As Pew president Michael Dimock puts it, “Generational categories are not scientifically defined.” He advises treating labels such as Gen X and Gen Z as “general reference points instead of scientific facts.” The labels can help describe broad social change, but they are not a reliable shortcut to understanding an individual.

Why might Gen X and Gen Z see things differently?

Different formative contexts can matter

People born decades apart may encounter different events, technologies, and opportunities while growing up. Pew describes Gen X as growing up as the computer revolution took hold, while Millennials came of age during the expansion of the internet. That offers historical context, not proof that every Gen Xer is comfortable with one technology or every Gen Zer prefers another. Events can also affect people across generations.

Age and cohort are not the same explanation

A difference between a younger and an older group could reflect age, career or family stage, the period when they were surveyed, or experiences more associated with their birth cohort. A single snapshot often cannot distinguish those explanations. Pew recommends comparing generations at similar life stages when historical data make that possible.

The National Academies’ 2019 assessment cautions that much workplace research cannot separate cohort effects from age and period effects. It also notes that individuals within a generation can differ as much as people born into different generations. Committee chair Nancy Tippins warned that limited research can “mislead employers about what their workers actually need.”

What do the U.S. survey comparisons show?

Some specific comparisons show differences between age groups or cohorts at particular moments. They should be read as dated observations about defined populations—not as a scorecard of enduring Gen X and Gen Z traits. Pew’s 2020 overview drew on several underlying surveys and analyses, many using 2018 or 2019 data.

Measure Reported finding What it can—and cannot—tell you
Technology access and use In Pew’s 2018 U.S. survey of teens ages 13–17, 95% had access to a smartphone and 97% used at least one of seven major online platforms. This describes U.S. teens surveyed in 2018, not all Gen Z members or current technology use.
College enrollment Pew’s analysis of 2018 data found 57% of U.S. 18- to 21-year-olds no longer in high school were enrolled in a two- or four-year college. Comparable reported figures were 52% for Millennials in 2003 and 43% for Gen X in 1987. The comparison concerns people in a defined age group at different dates. It does not establish why enrollment differed or what any individual values.
Teen employment Pew reported that 18% of U.S. teens ages 15–17 were employed in 2018, compared with 27% of Millennials in 2002 and 41% of Gen X in 1986. These are snapshots from different years, not a measure of work ethic. They do not isolate the effects of age, economic conditions, or cohort.
Views on global warming In Pew’s 2018 U.S. survey, 54% of Gen Z and 56% of Millennials said Earth was getting warmer due to human activity; the reported shares were 48% for Gen X, 45% for Boomers, and 38% for Silents. This is a response to a particular survey question in 2018, not a general measure of political identity or an enduring generational belief.

Pew’s overview also reported substantial similarities between Gen Z and Millennials on many issues. None of these figures establishes an innate generation effect, and the dated survey results should not be presented as current population estimates.

Is there really a generation gap at work?

A difference in age or work experience can be real without proving that a whole generation shares a standard work ethic, communication style, or set of needs. A 2025 meta-analysis reported few systematic, meaningful generational differences across a range of work outcomes. That finding supports caution about assigning workplace preferences to someone based on birth year; it does not mean colleagues never disagree.

For managing a specific disagreement, focus on the behavior and need rather than the label:

How to make sense of a perceived clash

When a generational explanation seems tempting, check what the comparison actually supports:

  • Life stage: Are the people being compared the same age, or might career or family stage explain the difference?
  • Historical context: What event or technology was measured, when did it occur, and could it have affected more than one generation?
  • Population and geography: Who was surveyed, at what age, and in which country? The figures above are U.S.-centered.
  • Evidence quality: Is the claim based on comparisons over time, or a single snapshot that cannot disentangle age, period, and cohort?
  • Variation within groups: Does evidence show a broad population pattern, or is an average being turned into a rule about individuals?

Pew’s 2023 methodology guidance says that avoiding standard generational labels when they are inappropriate can help “avoid reinforcing harmful stereotypes or oversimplifying people’s complex lived experiences.” That is a useful principle for reading headlines as well as navigating everyday disagreements.
