What Gemini can do on an Android phone
Google documents calling through the Phone app in the Gemini mobile app on Android. Gemini can place calls to saved contacts, particular numbers, businesses or organizations, and voicemail. It can also use a business identified earlier in the conversation. Google’s examples include asking Gemini to call a named contact, dialing a number, or calling the closest restaurant of a chosen cuisine. These are product examples, not a guarantee that every phrasing or result will work.

To use the feature, Google lists an Android phone or tablet, an active mobile plan, contact information saved on a device signed in to the relevant account, and Phone app permission for the Google app. The Phone app calling feature is not available in Gemini in Google Messages or in the Gemini web app, and it is unavailable during Live chats. How Gemini routes a call
Gemini uses the device’s default phone app. Google says it usually chooses the last app used to call that particular contact. If Gemini does not select Phone, add “@Phone” to the request and connect the app if prompted. You can check or change the default in Android’s Default apps settings; menu labels can vary by device.

Calling while the phone is locked
Calls and messages can be allowed without unlocking only when the setting is enabled. In Gemini’s lock-screen settings, turn on Allow calls and messages without unlocking. Availability also depends on the device setup.
Where Google Assistant still matters
Gemini does not handle every familiar Assistant action. Google says some unsupported actions may still be carried out with help from Assistant, and users can switch to Assistant if a feature they rely on is not supported in Gemini. Some Google Assistant-powered quick voice actions may also remain available when Gemini is the primary mobile assistant. Other Google Assistant built-in devices continue to be powered directly by Assistant. Calls from speakers and smart displays
Google Assistant can place calls to friends, family, and businesses on supported speakers, smart displays, and Pixel Tablet, but those devices cannot receive incoming phone calls. Google’s speaker and display guidance says phone calling is supported on most such devices in the US and Canada; it is not currently supported on those devices in other countries. That guidance mentions Duo calling separately, which is not the same as ordinary phone calling.
As of February 2024, Assistant no longer supports calling a smart speaker or display from another Assistant-enabled device. This limitation applies to speaker and display calling, not to calling from an Android phone. Details are in Google’s Assistant device calling guidance.

What can affect availability
Gemini’s Connected Apps table lists Phone for the Gemini mobile app on Android in chat mode, covering the locations and languages where Gemini mobile is supported. That listing is not a guarantee that every call action works for every account or device. Google says availability and supported actions depend on factors including language, device, account, and location. Its Gemini mobile availability page says the app is available in more than 150 countries, but that broad availability figure does not mean all calling features are available everywhere. Google also notes that “Hey Google” and some Assistant features are not available in all languages and countries or for supervised accounts; some work or school accounts lack Assistant-powered features such as quick voice actions. Check these settings before relying on Gemini to call
- Confirm the platform: Use the Gemini mobile app on an Android phone or tablet. The Phone integration is not available in Gemini in Google Messages, the web app, or Live chats.
- Check calling prerequisites: Make sure the device has an active mobile plan, the relevant contact information is saved on a signed-in device, and the Google app has Phone app permission.
- Check the calling app: Verify the Android default phone app. If Gemini does not route through Phone, try adding “@Phone” and connect the app if prompted.
- Check lock-screen access if needed: Enable Allow calls and messages without unlocking in Gemini’s lock-screen settings if you want calls or messages to work while locked.
- Use the right path for urgent calls: For emergency services, open the device’s calling app and dial directly.
Can Gemini replace Google Assistant for calls?
Not in every situation. Gemini is a documented option for placing calls from an Android device through Phone, while Assistant remains relevant for unsupported voice actions and for supported speaker and smart-display calling. Choose based on the device and action you need, then confirm language, account, region, permissions, and lock-screen settings rather than assuming a feature works everywhere.
