Gemini Skills vs. ChatGPT Custom GPTs: How Reusable AI Instructions Compare

Gemini Skills and ChatGPT custom GPTs both reuse AI instructions, but differ in files, integrations, availability, and product plans.

Both Gemini Skills and ChatGPT custom GPTs let you reuse instructions instead of rebuilding a workflow in every chat, but they are not equivalent features. Gemini Apps Skills center on reusable instructions and context; custom GPTs can also be configured with knowledge files, capabilities, connected apps, or API actions. Access is changing: Gemini Skills are rolling out gradually, while OpenAI has announced plans to retire custom GPTs and migrate workflows to Plugins.

“Gemini Skills” can also refer to developer-facing Agent Skills in Gemini CLI. Those are separate from Skills in the consumer Gemini app, so the comparison below focuses on Gemini Apps Skills unless stated otherwise.

How are Gemini Skills and custom GPTs different?

What you need to know Gemini Apps Skills ChatGPT custom GPTs
Core idea Reusable instructions and additional context that Gemini can apply when relevant or when you invoke a Skill. A configured assistant with instructions and optional knowledge, capabilities, apps, or API actions.
Reference material Upload a SKILL.md file or a folder/ZIP with a root SKILL.md and supported reference files. Attach knowledge files and instruct the GPT how to use them.
External connections The consumer Skills documentation describes instruction and context workflows; it does not establish support for arbitrary API actions. May use connected apps or custom API actions. A GPT can use apps or actions, but not both together.
Who can create one Gradual rollout; currently requires an eligible personal Google Account, Keep Activity, and age 18 or older. Work and school accounts are not currently supported. New creation and publishing are unavailable on personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts under the current guide. Eligible Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces may allow creation, editing, and publishing subject to permissions.
Product outlook Google announced a planned broad rollout beginning October 13, 2026, with completion expected by mid-November; the date is a plan, not confirmation of completion. OpenAI says custom GPTs are planned to retire across plans and workflows to migrate to Plugins. The stated Enterprise retirement date is December 11, 2026; timing and access may vary.

In short, Gemini Apps Skills are a way to package reusable guidance and supporting context. Custom GPTs are a broader configurable-assistant format in the current documentation, especially when a workflow needs connected services or API actions. That does not mean every custom GPT has those additions, or that every Skill is limited to a single prompt.

What can each one contain?

Gemini Apps Skills: instructions and supporting files

Google describes a Skill as “a set of reusable instructions and additional context.” You can create one with Gemini, start from a recommended template, make it manually, or upload a file or folder. Uploaded projects need a SKILL.md in the main folder; supported text-based files and some media can provide reference material. Reference files need to be uploaded with the Skill.

Skills may be applied automatically when Gemini considers them relevant, or you can specify one directly. Google’s help page says internet-dependent scripts and actions on external websites are not supported. Do not assume a Gemini Apps Skill can call an arbitrary API just because a similarly named developer feature can work with agent tools.

ChatGPT custom GPTs: instructions, knowledge, and optional capabilities

A custom GPT’s instructions define how it behaves. Its creator can also attach knowledge files, enable capabilities such as web search, image generation, Canvas, or Data Analysis, and configure apps or custom actions where available. Knowledge files provide source material; instructions can guide the GPT to consult or cite that material when appropriate.

Custom actions connect a GPT to external APIs. They require API details, authentication, and an OpenAPI JSON or YAML schema. A GPT can use apps or actions, but not both at once. These options make the format more configurable, but they also mean a GPT’s behavior depends on its setup and the account or workspace that can access it.

Which one should you use?

  • Choose a Gemini Apps Skill if you have access to the feature and want Gemini to reuse a repeatable set of instructions and reference context in supported Gemini app surfaces.
  • Choose a custom GPT if you need a dedicated configured assistant and its setup benefits from attached knowledge, built-in capabilities, connected apps, or API actions—and your account or workspace permits creation or use.
  • Check your actual account first if you are deciding what to build now. Feature availability depends on rollout, plan, and workspace permissions, not just the product name.
  • Plan a migration carefully if you rely on a custom GPT. A future Plugin or Skill may not reproduce the GPT’s files, sharing, capabilities, or actions one-for-one; verify the specific workflow rather than assuming parity.

Can you create Gemini Skills or custom GPTs right now?

Gemini Apps Skills access

Google’s current help page says you must be at least 18, signed in to a personal Google Account, and have Keep Activity turned on. Skills are not currently available to work or school accounts, and rollout is gradual. The help page lists Gemini mobile, Mac app, and web surfaces for use; availability may differ by user and change as rollout proceeds. See Google’s Gemini Apps Skills help page for current eligibility and setup instructions.

Separately, Google Workspace Updates said the broad Gemini Apps and Workspace rollout was planned to begin October 13, 2026, and expected to finish by mid-November. Because that announcement describes a schedule, not completed availability, check the current product help and your account for access.

ChatGPT custom GPT access

OpenAI’s current creation guide says personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs. Eligible Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces may create, edit, and publish GPTs when their workspace permissions allow it. Creation happens on the web; mobile supports using GPTs but not creating them. Existing GPTs may remain usable and editable depending on plan and permissions. Consult OpenAI’s GPT creation and editing guide for the current rules.

What does “Gemini Skill” mean for developers?

Gemini CLI Agent Skills are not the same feature as Gemini Apps Skills. The CLI documentation describes self-contained directories that can include instructions and assets. The CLI discovers Skills in built-in, extension, user, and workspace locations, can load their names and descriptions first, and activate a matching Skill when needed. Activation may require user confirmation and grants access to bundled paths. The docs identify .agents/skills/ as an interoperable alias. See the Gemini CLI Agent Skills documentation.

This developer-facing format is useful context if you build software-agent workflows, but it does not establish that a Gemini Apps Skill can be imported into ChatGPT, or vice versa. Likewise, the shared word “Skill” does not prove that a ChatGPT Skill or Plugin replaces every custom GPT feature.

What happens to existing custom GPTs?

OpenAI’s current FAQ says it plans to retire custom GPTs across ChatGPT plans and migrate workflows to Plugins. It gives December 11, 2026 as the scheduled Enterprise retirement date and says migration timing and Plugin availability may vary by account or workspace. This is a stated plan, not a guarantee that every transition will happen on that exact date. If you use someone else’s GPT, check the creator’s guidance and any in-product notice. The latest details are in OpenAI’s custom GPT retirement and migration FAQ.

OpenAI describes Skills as reusable workflows with instructions and supporting resources, and Plugins as able to combine Skills with connected apps and other elements. Some Skills do not need an external service. That terminology points to a migration path, but it does not prove that a new configuration will preserve every GPT’s knowledge, capabilities, sharing, or action setup. For action details, see OpenAI’s guide to configuring GPT actions; for current Skills and Plugins descriptions, see Skills in ChatGPT and Plugins in ChatGPT.
