As of October 3, 2026, Skills are rolling out in stages, and the transition differs between personal Gemini accounts, Workspace accounts, and Workspace Studio workflows. Existing Gems are expected to move to Skills, but Workspace guidance says migrated Skills will be drafts that their creators must review and activate.
What Skills change about Gemini
Google describes a Skill as a reusable set of custom instructions. Unlike a Gem that users open as a separate customized assistant, a Skill can be invoked in a Gemini chat by typing / followed by its name. Google says @ invocation is planned, and Gemini can also recognize a relevant Skill and apply it automatically. Users can combine multiple Skills—for example, writing guidance with brand instructions. Google Senior Product Manager Deven Tokuno said the aim is to let people save frequently used instructions once and reuse them in chats. Google’s September 30, 2026 announcement

Creating and moving Skills
Google says Gemini can create a Skill from a chat and that Skills can include reference files such as text documents, PDFs, and images. The Gemini Apps Help page says users can also import a Skill by uploading a SKILL.md file. Skill creation and file upload are currently available on Gemini web and Mac apps. The Workspace documentation describes the Markdown-based SKILL.md format as an open standard intended to make Skills portable between tools; portability does not mean Skills sync automatically between Gemini and Workspace.

Not every Gem capability carries over
Skills are not yet a feature-for-feature replacement. Google’s help page says Skills do not work with Canvas, Deep Research, or Guided Learning, and most default tools available in Gems—including Create video and Create music—are not currently available to Skills. Skills do work with some Connected Apps, including Workspace apps. GitHub files are not currently supported as Skill knowledge files.
When Gems are going away
Google’s published dates depend on the account and product surface. The Workspace administrator page uses “no sooner than” for the 2027 Workspace retirement dates; the timelines below were still future milestones on October 3, 2026.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Availability varies by surface
Google’s September 30 announcement says Skills are rolling out globally in Gemini chat and will reach Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education customers in the coming weeks. Its footnote says Skills are available to all Google AI subscription tiers and currently to users aged 18 or older, with under-18 access coming soon. Separately, Gemini Apps Help describes chat Skills as available to signed-in personal Google Account users over 18.

Workspace guidance gives different eligibility by product surface: it lists Gemini app Skills for all Workspace editions and users of all ages, while Workspace app Skills require users to be 18 or older and an eligible plan or add-on. Listed eligibility includes Business Starter, Standard, and Plus; Enterprise Standard and Plus; Google AI Pro for Education; or AI Expanded Access. Check the Workspace page for the applicable surface and current domain rollout rather than treating one age or plan rule as universal.
Will existing Gems and their files transfer?
Google says existing Gems will be transitioned automatically. Workspace’s migration guidance says converted Skills retain their original names, descriptions, custom instructions, and uploaded knowledge files, and that Drive permissions and sharing settings transfer. The converted Skills are drafts: their creators must review and activate them before they can be used or shared. Google says it will publish full migration instructions at least 30 days before automatic migration starts, so details beyond those stated behaviors are not yet established.

Save files or recreate a Gem early
- Download the Gem’s Knowledge files first. Gemini Apps Help recommends saving these before recreating a Gem as a Skill.
- Create a Skill in Gemini. Use the Gemini web app or Mac app for the currently documented Skill creation and file upload support.
- Upload the saved reference files. Google says text documents, PDFs, and images can be used; GitHub files are not currently supported.
- Review the Skill’s instructions and activate it. A manually created Skill is separate from waiting for the automatic migration; check that its instructions and reference materials work for the tasks you need.
These file and import details are in Gemini Apps Help.

Workspace Skills in the Gemini app and Skills in Workspace apps do not sync. If you need the same instructions in both places—or have a Gem used in Workspace—you must recreate the Skill separately in Workspace Studio. Workspace eligibility and rollout are account- and domain-dependent, so a Skill created in Gemini should not be assumed to appear in Workspace Studio.

Replace Ask a Gem steps in Workspace Studio flows
Google says users can no longer add Ask a Gem steps to new or existing Workspace Studio flows. Existing flows containing those steps remain editable and functional until deprecation, but Google says they stop working starting March 2027. The Studio Help article recommends replacing Ask a Gem with Ask Gemini and configuring a Workspace Studio Skill where available. See Google’s Workspace Studio flow transition guidance for the procedure and current details.
- Identify high-priority Gems and the Workspace Studio flows that depend on Ask a Gem.
- Check when Skills are enabled for your Workspace domain and whether your edition or add-on qualifies for the Workspace app surface.
- Rebuild important instructions in the right surface, then review the results before relying on them in a workflow.
Google’s administrator guidance recommends informing users of their account-specific dates, enabling Skills when available, rebuilding priority Gems, and updating affected Studio flows. Workspace administrator transition page
A separate November change: Gems by Google Labs
Google’s September 30 announcement also says Gems by Google Labs and the Opal mini-app experiment are turning down in November. The announcement says Gems by Google Labs do not migrate into Skills. That is distinct from the transition of ordinary user-created Gems, so do not assume the automatic migration described for those Gems applies to Labs Gems or Opal.
