Most Pixel phones that meet Google’s published minimum—at least 2 GB of RAM and Android 10 or later—can download the Gemini app. Pixel 9 and later phones have Gemini as the default assistant. On a Pixel, you can open Gemini by saying “Hey Google,” holding the power button, tapping Gemini in the Google app, or opening the Gemini app. Availability and behavior still depend on settings, language, country, account type, and the task.
Which Pixel phones support Gemini?
Google’s Pixel phone help gives two different compatibility facts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Download eligibility: Gemini is available to download on Pixel devices with at least 2 GB of RAM and Android 10 or later.
- Default assistant: Pixel 9 and later phones have Gemini as their default assistant.
These are not the same rule: the default-assistant status on Pixel 9 and later does not mean older compatible Pixels cannot install Gemini. Nor does meeting the app’s minimum guarantee every feature will work. Google notes that features can vary by country and language, and may be unavailable with supervised accounts or certain work and school accounts.

How do you activate Gemini on a Pixel?
Google documents four ways to open Gemini on Pixel phones:
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- Say “Hey Google.”
- Hold the power button. You can change which button activates Gemini in Gemini Settings.
- Tap Gemini in the Google app.
- Open the Gemini app directly.
If “Hey Google” does not work, check that “Hey Google” and Voice Match are enabled. Depending on the current interface, Google directs users to the Gemini app’s profile and settings or to their account’s Voice Match settings; follow the on-screen prompts to train Voice Match. Google’s Android Gemini help explains that Assistant remains involved in voice activation: “When you use ‘Hey Google’ and Voice Match for your Gemini mobile app, Google Assistant detects the activation, recognizes you with Voice Match, routes your query to Gemini, and helps Gemini to fulfill your request if it is a quick voice action feature that Gemini is still learning to handle directly.”
Hey Google and Voice Match with Gemini are unavailable for supervised accounts and in Bulgarian, Croatian, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, and Ukrainian. Other availability can also depend on country, language, account, and settings.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
What happens while the phone is waiting for “Hey Google”?
Google says Assistant waits for the activation phrase in standby and does not send what you say to Google or anyone else during that standby period. After detecting an activation, it may send detected audio and the Voice Match model temporarily for comparison. Google cautions that a sound resembling “Hey Google” can trigger detection, and that a similar voice or recording could be mistaken for the enrolled user. Whether an unintended interaction is stored in Gemini Apps Activity depends on your Keep Activity setting.
Can Gemini work while a Pixel is locked?
Some tasks can be handled from a locked Android phone if the relevant access is allowed. Google’s locked-phone guidance lists examples including answering general questions; making calls or answering messages with your opt-in; reading and replying to message notifications; getting Maps directions or place information; handling some reminders, events, notes, and lists; searching and summarizing videos; searching for hotels and flights; controlling many smart devices; setting, stopping, and snoozing alarms; setting and stopping timers; pausing media; and controlling selected phone features such as the flashlight and volume.
Lock-screen access is not blanket permission to use personal data. Some requests, such as accessing calendar information, still require you to unlock the phone. A voice chat may start while the phone is locked, but a protected action or personal-content request can still require authentication. Check the lock-screen access settings and opt in where Google requires it.
Does Gemini do everything Google Assistant did?
No. Gemini adds a conversational assistant experience for writing, brainstorming, learning, and other tasks, and can work with text, voice, images, and camera input. Google also describes extensions for services such as Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. Its phone guidance warns that responses can be inaccurate or inappropriate; check important answers, and do not treat them as professional advice.

Google specifically identifies some Assistant capabilities that Gemini does not support, including Interpreter mode and media service providers for podcasts, news, radio stations, and some third-party music providers. If one of those functions—or another established Assistant feature you rely on—is missing, Google says you can switch back to Google Assistant. Google’s guidance does not provide a complete feature-by-feature parity list, so a particular task may need to be checked in the app.
Switching the assistant on your phone does not automatically replace Assistant on other devices. Google says devices such as smart displays, speakers, TVs, cars, watches, headphones, and earbuds that have Assistant built in continue using Assistant.
