In the app, check the signed-in account, current model controls, plan information, usage limits, and location. In a Cloud integration, verify the project and location, API setup, credentials, permissions, and the error code.
First identify which Gemini product you’re using
“Gemini model” can mean a model offered in the consumer Gemini Apps interface or one called through a Google Cloud API. An account plan does not diagnose a Cloud API problem, and a Cloud project’s permissions do not control the consumer app’s model picker.

If a model is missing in Gemini Apps
Check the account type
Make sure you’re signed into the account you intend to use, then establish whether it is personal or managed by work or school. Google’s Gemini Apps limits and upgrades guidance covers personal Google Accounts and directs work or school users to separate guidance. A personal-account plan explanation may not apply to an organization-managed account.

Check the model controls and current availability
Review the model choices and plan or feature information currently shown in Gemini Apps for that account. Google says access can vary with testing, experimentation, availability, and usage, and explicitly warns: “Model names, versions, and availability may change.” A model’s absence alone does not establish that it has been permanently removed or is unavailable to everyone.

Check limits before changing plans
Google AI plans can expand access to features and models and change usage limits, but the help page lists model access across more than one plan category. A subscription is therefore not a universal fix for a missing choice. The page’s current plan table gives AI Plus limits as 2x standard, AI Pro as 4x standard, and AI Ultra as 5x or 20x AI Pro limits depending on the subscription; these are plan-specific figures that Google may change.
The same help page lists context windows of 32k tokens without an AI plan, 128k with AI Plus, and 1 million with AI Pro or AI Ultra. These figures describe the account-plan context windows on that page, not a guarantee that a particular model will appear in every account or location.

If you have reached a usage limit, Google says a subscriber may continue the conversation with Flash-Lite or wait for limits to refresh. Free users may find some compute-intensive features unavailable during high demand. Check the limit notice in the app before treating a temporary limit as a model-access problem.

Availability can depend on where you are using the service. Google notes that an AI Ultra subscriber traveling to a country where Ultra is unavailable may see prompts about Ultra but cannot upgrade or use it there. If a feature changes while traveling, check Google’s current supported-country information rather than inferring eligibility from your home country or subscription alone.
If a model is missing from a Google Cloud API integration
Verify the project, location, and setup
- Confirm the selected project and request location. Check that the request uses the intended Google Cloud project and location. A model listing is location-scoped, so a different location can return a different result.
- Check billing and API setup. Verify billing and that the Agent Platform API is enabled and configured for the project used by the request. Follow Google’s Agent Platform quickstart for the current setup flow.
- Check the identity and permissions. Confirm which credentials the integration is using and that they are valid. Google’s quickstart identifies Agent Platform User (
roles/aiplatform.user) as the usual documented project role; an administrator may need to grant it. - Read the actual API error. Use the response status and message to narrow the issue before changing configuration. The code can distinguish authentication and permission failures from policy, quota, or temporary availability problems.
Use the status code to narrow the cause
| Status | What it can indicate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| 401 | Missing, invalid, or expired credentials | Check which identity made the request and refresh or correct its credentials. |
| 403 | Insufficient permissions | Check IAM access on the project and whether organization controls also apply. |
| 400 | Invalid request, model allowlisting, or organization-policy block | Read the response details and check request fields, model access, and applicable organization policy. |
| 429 | Quota exceeded or shared server capacity overloaded | Check quota and current capacity. A quota increase is not guaranteed to resolve shared-capacity overload. |
| 503 | Temporary service unavailability | Check Google Cloud service status and retry after the interruption has cleared. |
Google documents these possibilities in its API errors reference. An error code narrows the diagnosis, but the accompanying message and request context matter; for example, not every 400 response necessarily means an allowlisting issue.
List models in the correct location
The Cloud models.list method returns models for a specified project and location under projects/{project}/locations/{location}. You can filter by model ID or display name. If the response includes nextPageToken, request subsequent pages before concluding that a model is absent. This API listing is a Cloud diagnostic; it does not describe which choices should appear in Gemini Apps.

What a missing model does—and does not—tell you
Without the account type, country, model name, Cloud project and location, and any error message, there is no single cause to infer. In Gemini Apps, availability and limits can change. In Cloud, the relevant evidence is the request’s project and location, the caller’s access, and the API response. Diagnose within the product surface where the problem occurs, and use Google’s current account or Cloud documentation for eligibility that can vary over time.
