It is available without a paid plan on Android and iOS, but it is not an always-on camera or a substitute for expert judgment: availability and controls can vary, and you should verify consequential answers.
Google announced camera sharing on Android in April 2025 and said camera and screen sharing would be free for everyone on Android and iOS in May 2025. The practical change is that you can show a changing scene and ask follow-up questions instead of describing everything or uploading a single photo. Google’s Android announcement and its May 2025 update describe the rollout.

What Gemini Live camera sharing is
Google commonly calls the feature Gemini Live with camera sharing or video streaming. Start a Live voice conversation, then choose Turn on video streaming to share a live view from your phone. This differs from uploading a still image to a standard Gemini chat: Live lets you continue talking and adjust the view as the task changes. It also differs from Gemini’s video-generation products.

“World-facing camera” is a useful description of the interaction, not a claim that Gemini constantly watches your surroundings. The camera feed is shared during an active session. You can pause or stop sharing, and Google documents controls for switching camera views and screen sharing. Google’s Live help page lists the main controls.

What it can do—and where it helps
The feature is most useful when a visual detail is difficult to describe and follow-up questions matter. For example, you can ask Gemini to explain an appliance control panel, read a sign or instruction sheet, talk through a recipe, identify tools, compare décor ideas, or explain something on your phone screen. These are intended use cases, not a guarantee that every answer will be correct. Google’s examples include camera-sharing tasks.
The interaction can feel more natural than composing a detailed prompt: speak, show the relevant area, listen, and ask a follow-up. You can interrupt Gemini and move the camera in response to its questions. It works best when the subject is visible and the phone can be held or positioned safely.
Availability, requirements, and cost
Google announced camera and screen sharing as free for Android and iOS users. A paid Google AI plan is not required for camera mode, though paid plans can change usage limits and include other benefits. Availability and feature controls may still differ by device, app version, account, language, region, and rollout.

How to start Gemini Live camera sharing
On Android
- Open the Gemini app, or invoke Gemini as your device assistant.
- Tap Live at the bottom of the screen, or use the Live entry point shown in your app.
- Start speaking, then tap Turn on video streaming or the camera control.
- Allow camera and microphone access if prompted, then point the camera at the subject.
- Ask a specific question. Pause or end sharing when you are finished.
Google also describes invoking Gemini with the power button on supported Android devices, then tapping Live and the camera icon. Labels and entry points can vary by device and app version. See Google’s setup instructions.
On iPhone and iPad
- Update and open the Gemini app, then check that you are signed in.
- Start a Live conversation using the Live control available in your app.
- If the camera-sharing option is available, tap Turn on video streaming or the camera control.
- Grant camera and microphone permissions when iOS asks, then show Gemini the subject.
- Pause or stop sharing when the task is complete.
Google announced camera and screen sharing for iOS, but feature availability and controls may not match Android on every device or account. If the option is missing, check the current Gemini app, account eligibility, permissions, language, and regional availability rather than assuming a particular iOS menu path. How to share your screen
- Open the app, webpage, or setting you want to discuss.
- Start Gemini Live and choose Turn on screen sharing or the equivalent control shown.
- Talk through the screen while scrolling or navigating as needed.
- Stop screen sharing before opening private messages, passwords, payment details, or other sensitive content.
Camera sharing versus other visual tools

Real-time sharing does not mean perfect, persistent understanding of every frame. Interpretation can change with camera movement, lighting, occlusion, and the direction of the conversation. Google has also announced visual highlighting that can point out objects in the camera view, beginning with Pixel 10 and rolling out to other Android and iOS devices in stages. That guidance is distinct from basic camera sharing and may not be available on every device. Google’s visual guidance announcement describes that rollout.
Privacy: what happens to shared video and screens
Do not assume that video is never retained or used. Google says Gemini Live recordings, transcripts, and shared content may be saved in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is on. With Keep Activity off, Live chats may be retained in the Google Account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. Google says audio, video, and screen shares are not used to improve Google services by default, but users can separately choose to allow that use. Transcripts can be handled differently from the audio and video themselves. Review Google’s Live data and activity information and improvement settings for current details.

- Avoid showing strangers, private documents, faces, or license plates when they are not needed; get permission before including other people.
- Stop screen sharing before opening passwords, payment details, private messages, or medical records.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity, Keep Activity, and the setting for improving Google services with audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares.
- Use a still photo instead of a live stream when continuous context is unnecessary.
Turning off Keep Activity can affect some connected-app functionality. A live session is not an invisible monitoring mode: sharing requires an active camera stream, and you should stop it when you are done.
Accuracy, safety, and practical limits
Gemini Live is best treated as a visual second opinion. It can confuse similar objects, misread text at an angle or in poor light, infer details without enough evidence, or sound confident despite uncertainty. It may miss small hazards or fail to retain every detail shown earlier. Move closer, improve lighting, reduce glare, and ask it to identify what it can actually see before acting on a suggestion.
Use it to generate questions, explain instructions, or suggest possibilities—not as a professional inspector, diagnostician, security camera, or autonomous safety system. Verify advice involving medical symptoms or medication, electrical or gas work, structural or automotive repairs, food allergies, legal or financial documents, child safety, emergencies, or road hazards. If being wrong could cause injury, loss, or legal trouble, consult a qualified source.

Long sessions may also be affected by connection quality, battery use, heat, or interruptions. Treat these as practical possibilities rather than guaranteed results; Google’s feature announcements do not establish a specific battery, heat, or latency performance for every device.

When to use Gemini Live—and when not to
Live camera sharing is compelling when you cannot easily describe a visible or changing situation and follow-up questions help. A still image may be better for a small object, careful label reading, a private scene, or a task where you want to preserve exactly what was analyzed. Lens may be quicker for identification or translation; screen sharing is more direct for software questions but needs extra care around notifications and private content.
Phone assistants, other multimodal AI apps, and future smart glasses offer different combinations of integration, visual access, privacy, and convenience. There is no universal winner: choose the tool that is available, sufficiently trustworthy, and appropriate for the task.

Is Gemini always watching through my camera?
No. Camera sharing is used during an active Live session when you turn on video streaming; it is not an always-on observer. Stop sharing when you finish.
Does Google store or use Gemini Live video to train its models?
Google says Live content may be saved in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is on. With it off, Live chats may be retained for up to 72 hours for service and feedback processing. Audio, video, and screen shares are not used to improve Google services by default, but users can opt in to improvement use. Check Google’s current privacy settings and documentation for details.
Why can’t I see the video-sharing option?
Availability can depend on app version, device, account, language, region, and rollout. Update Gemini, confirm you are signed in, check permissions, and look for the current Live controls.
