It can explain ideas, ask questions, and use learning aids such as diagrams or quizzes. It is distinct from Google’s study notebooks, which organize lessons around a student’s goals and materials, and from school-managed Gemini for Education. Access varies by account, age, region, and rollout; Google’s product descriptions are not independent proof that the feature improves learning outcomes.
What Gemini Guided Learning does
Google announced Guided Learning on August 6, 2025, as a learning experience in the Gemini app. The intended approach is interactive: the student explores a topic through questions, explanations, and successive steps instead of treating Gemini only as an answer box. Google says explanations can adapt to a learner and may include images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes. Its launch examples included learning about enzymes, getting started on an essay, and exploring photography. Google’s launch announcement describes the feature and its design goals.

Google’s VP of Learning, Maureen Heymans, said: “Guided Learning encourages participation through probing and open-ended questions that spark a discussion and provide an opportunity to dive deeper into a subject.” Google CEO Sundar Pichai similarly framed the goal as understanding and critical thinking, not just obtaining an answer. These are statements of intent from Google, not independent findings that the feature improves grades, retention, or learning.
How students can use Guided Learning to study
Use it to make a difficult concept more manageable, check your reasoning, or practise explaining what you have learned. A useful prompt sets the subject, your level, and the kind of help you want, while asking Gemini not to skip straight to the final answer.
#1 Best Overall
- SLIM. LIGHTWEIGHT. READY TO GO: The all-new slim design is perfect for busy lives on the go.
- SKILLFULLY DESIGNED. MILITARY TOUGH: Built with premium craftsmanship to withstand the occasional drop or ding.
- ALL-DAY, ALL-IN-ONE CHARGING: Power through your school day – and beyond – with a long-lasting 12-hour battery.¹
- 3X FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS GENERATION OF WIFI: Crush your schoolwork in record time with Wi-Fi that’s three times faster than the previous generation of Wi-Fi.
- YOUR PHONE AND CHROMEBOOK WORK BETTER TOGETHER: Easily transfer files between devices, and control your phone right from your Chromebook.
- Open Gemini with the account you intend to use. Feature availability can differ between personal and school-managed accounts.
- Choose Guided Learning if it appears in your Gemini interface. Google’s February 2026 feature guide describes it as providing step-by-step explanations and guiding questions that check understanding as you proceed; interface labels and availability can change. See Google’s student feature guide.
- Give the tool a specific learning task. For example: “Help me understand how enzymes work. Ask one question at a time, explain unfamiliar terms, and let me try each step before showing the answer.”
- Work through the explanation actively. Answer its questions in your own words, ask it to clarify a step you do not understand, and request a new example if the first one is confusing.
- Check the result. Compare important explanations with your class materials, teacher, or an authoritative reference. Treat generated explanations as study support, not as a substitute for checking facts or doing assessed work yourself.
For exam preparation, Google has cited SAT and JEE study as examples of how students might use Gemini. That is a company example, not a neutral comparison with a teacher, tutor, or other study tool.
Guided Learning, study notebooks, and Classroom are different
These tools are related, but they serve different roles. Guided Learning focuses on the interaction: questions and sequential explanations. Study notebooks are organized around a learner’s goal and materials. Classroom experiences are connected to a school context and course materials. Google’s announcements describe these features and rollout plans, not a guarantee that every account has them.

| Option | Main role | Materials and context | Access detail in Google’s announcements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided Learning | Step-by-step explanation and guiding questions that check understanding. | Google’s feature descriptions focus on the learning interaction; the cited announcement does not establish that every response is grounded in uploaded class materials. | Google announced the mode in August 2025. Availability depends on the account and current rollout. |
| Study notebooks | Personalized lessons organized around a learner’s goal, with a game plan, diagnostic quiz, custom lessons and quizzes, and a progress dashboard. | Students can add class materials, according to Google’s June 25, 2026 announcement. | The June 25, 2026 post said notebooks were rolling out to personal Google Accounts for users 18 and older; school-issued accounts, including those used by under-18s, were expected in the coming weeks. It described desktop availability at that time, with mobile support planned later in summer. Check the current interface rather than assuming that rollout timing still applies. Details: Google’s connected learning tools announcement. |
| Gemini in a Classroom destination | School-connected study activities such as creating study guides, self-quizzing, or using Guided Learning. | Google said these experiences could be grounded in course materials and reviewed with pedagogy and safety experts; that does not guarantee every generated response is correct. | Google described these experiences in its June 2026 education announcement. A school’s account setup and rollout determine what students can access. See Google’s announcement. |
Access, age, school accounts, and student offers
There is no single access rule that applies to every student. Personal Google Accounts and school-issued accounts can have different availability, age conditions, administration, and data terms. Google’s dated rollout statements should not be read as current guarantees: check the Gemini app or ask a school administrator what is enabled for the specific account.

Google’s June 30, 2025 announcement described Gemini for Education as an admin-managed service in Workspace for Education and said it had enterprise-grade data protection. Google also said education users’ chat data would not be used to improve AI models under the terms described in that announcement. Those statements apply to the education service as Google described it then; do not assume the same terms apply to personal accounts or that policies have remained unchanged. Schools and families should check current administrator guidance and terms. Google’s Gemini for Education announcement explains the original terms.

Age and regional eligibility
Google’s student offers have varied by date, region, age, and eligibility rules. On August 19, 2026, Google announced one year of Google AI Pro at no cost for eligible U.S. college students and described the offer’s value as $19.99 per month. That is Google’s stated monthly valuation of this particular offer, not a universal price or an offer for every student. Check the offer terms for current eligibility and availability.
Earlier announcements covered different groups: a 2025 offer for students aged 18 and older in the United States, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil, and an October 2025 offer for students aged 18 and older in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. These are historical announcements, not evidence that those offers remain open. See Google’s August 2025 student announcement and October 2025 regional announcement.

Can Gemini make quizzes from class notes?
Google says study notebooks can use materials a student adds to generate diagnostic quizzes, lessons, and custom quizzes, while the June 2026 Classroom announcement described study activities grounded in course materials. Whether a particular student can use these features depends on account access and rollout. If the tools are available, provide only materials you are allowed to share, then check quiz questions and answers against the original notes: using class materials as context does not guarantee that generated content is complete or error-free.
Does Guided Learning improve learning?
Google describes Guided Learning as designed to encourage participation, deepen understanding, and build critical thinking. The announcements cited here do not provide an independently published, quantified study of Guided Learning’s effect on student attainment. Google-reported adoption and training figures are not evidence of learning gains: for example, the company reported use at more than 1,000 U.S. higher-education institutions and by more than 10 million students in 2025, and reported that more than 1 million educators and students received Google for Education AI training that year. Those figures measure reach and training, not whether Guided Learning improves learning outcomes. See Google’s higher-education report and 2025 education year-in-review.
For practical use, treat Guided Learning as a study aid: ask it to explain, question you, and give you room to reason. Verify consequential facts and keep teachers involved, especially for younger students and assessed assignments.
