Yes—but the original “more than 50 languages” announcement was for NotebookLM Audio Overviews, not a universal Gemini-language guarantee. Google announced the NotebookLM expansion on April 29, 2025. The current NotebookLM help page now lists Audio Overviews in more than 80 languages. Gemini Apps can also create Audio Overviews, but their language controls and availability are not documented as an identical 80-plus-language list.
This distinction matters if you are choosing a tool for multilingual study, research or document review.
What an Audio Overview is
An Audio Overview turns documents and other supplied sources into an AI-generated spoken discussion or summary. NotebookLM’s default Deep Dive format uses two AI hosts that discuss and connect ideas found in your sources. It is designed as a listening aid grounded in those materials—not a human-produced podcast, conventional text-to-speech reader, audiobook, certified translation or guarantee that every source fact is reproduced correctly.
Google says Audio Overviews and their voices are AI-generated and can contain inaccuracies or audio glitches. Check the original documents before relying on claims, especially for medical, legal, financial, academic or technical work.

The “more than 50 languages” claim began with NotebookLM
On April 29, 2025, Google announced that NotebookLM Audio Overviews were available in more than 50 languages. Google described the feature as powered by Gemini’s native audio capabilities and added an Output Language setting. A multilingual example used Portuguese, Spanish and English source material while producing an overview in a learner’s preferred language.
Google later announced an expansion on August 25, 2025, saying Audio Overviews reached more than 80 languages and that non-English versions were made more comprehensive. The current NotebookLM documentation is therefore the best current reference; it supersedes the launch-era 50-plus figure.
How many languages does NotebookLM support now?
As checked August 18, 2026, Google’s NotebookLM help page lists Audio Overview output in 80+ languages. Availability can change with regional rollouts, so use the live list in NotebookLM rather than treating this number as permanent.

- Other documented options: Afrikaans, Amharic, Armenian, Basque, Georgian, Haitian Creole, Icelandic, Javanese, Latin, Swahili and additional languages shown in Google’s list.
“Supported” means an output option is available. Google does not promise identical fluency, pronunciation, dialect handling, voice selection, length controls or terminology quality for every language.

Gemini Apps later added Audio Overview generation for uploaded documents and slides, NotebookLM notebooks and Deep Research reports. Google’s instructions are documented at Gemini Help, and rollout information appears in the Gemini release notes.
| What you need | Best starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Source-grounded research notebook | NotebookLM | Built around your uploaded sources and citations. |
| Full Audio Overview formats and documented 80+ language list | NotebookLM | The language list is published for NotebookLM, not automatically for Gemini Apps. |
| Quick audio summary of a document or slide deck | Gemini Apps | Controls vary by account, region, device and rollout. |
| Deep Research report converted to audio | Gemini Apps | Google lists Deep Research as a supported input. |
| Interactive conversation with hosts | NotebookLM | Interactive mode is currently documented as English-only. |
NotebookLM notebooks can be accessed through Gemini, but Google says Audio Overviews and other Studio artifacts remain available in NotebookLM rather than being generated directly from every Gemini notebook integration. See Google’s integration guidance.

How to make a multilingual Audio Overview in NotebookLM
- Open NotebookLM and create or open a notebook.
- Upload or import your sources.
- Open the notebook’s Studio panel and select Audio Overview.
- Choose a format: Deep Dive, The Brief, The Critique or The Debate.
- Select the output language. Where offered, choose a length and enter a custom prompt—for example, asking the hosts to focus on methods, definitions or exam-relevant findings.
- Select Generate. Google says generation may take a couple of minutes.
- Use the player to change speed. You can download the audio or share it when notebook permissions allow.
What the four formats do
- Deep Dive: the default, in-depth two-host conversation.
- The Brief: a short, under-two-minute summary from one speaker.
- The Critique: a constructive evaluation of the supplied material.
- The Debate: a structured exchange examining multiple perspectives.
The Longer length option is documented as English-only, so do not assume every language has identical duration controls. You can inspect an artifact’s custom generation prompt from its three-dot menu; Google documents this at NotebookLM Help.
How to make one in Gemini Apps
- Go to Gemini on a supported account.
- Select Add file and upload a document, slide deck or NotebookLM notebook.
- Ask Gemini to create an Audio Overview.
- Wait for generation. Google says this usually takes about three to five minutes.
The exact button, language picker and eligibility can differ by account, age, region, device and staged rollout. If you need NotebookLM’s complete language list or Studio formats, use NotebookLM directly.

NotebookLM supports PDFs; Google Docs and Slides; Word, PowerPoint, text, Markdown and CSV files; public web URLs; public YouTube videos with captions; audio files; images; ePub files; and Gemini Chats. Google’s current source guidance says an individual source can contain up to 500,000 words or 200 MB, while free users can include up to 50 sources. See the source limits and import rules.

- Google Pixel Buds 2a deliver lightweight comfort, crisp audio, Active Noise Cancellation, and a dependable battery, all for less[1]
- Hear only what you want to hear; Google Tensor A1 powers Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal 1.5 to help block external noise; or switch to Transparency mode to hear the world around you while you listen
- Immerse yourself in clear, crisp audio with the 11 mm dynamic speaker driver, or customize the levels of bass, treble, and more with the 5-band equalizer
- Pixel Buds 2a are built for lightweight comfort and an impeccable fit; secure them during workouts or commutes with the twist-to-adjust stabilizer, or twist the other direction for relaxed comfort
- Hear and be heard with Clear Calling; it helps block background noise, so wind, external chatter, or other distractions in your environment won’t interrupt your conversations[2]
- YouTube imports use the transcript, not visual content. Videos without captions may fail, and recent uploads may not be immediately available.
- Web imports may omit embedded images or nested pages; paywalled pages are unsupported.
- Poor-quality recordings can fail transcription.
- Only upload material you have the right to use.
“Multilingual” covers several different capabilities
Do not treat one language number as proof that every part of the product behaves the same way.
- Input language: the language of your PDFs, pages, transcripts or recordings.
- Output language: the language selected for the generated Audio Overview.
- Interface language: the language used by the app’s menus and controls.
- Interactive language: the language available when you talk back to the hosts; NotebookLM currently documents this mode as English-only.
An Audio Overview can discuss supplied material in a selected output language, but it is not a professional or certified translation service. Names, specialist vocabulary and regional pronunciation may sound unnatural, and Google has published no independent quality score for each language.

The language picker is missing
- Confirm you are in NotebookLM rather than a Gemini workflow with narrower controls.
- Try NotebookLM in a desktop browser, update the mobile app and reopen the Studio panel.
- Check account age, country or territory and staged availability.
- Make sure you selected Audio Overview rather than English-only interactive mode.
Google says the NotebookLM mobile app supports creating and playing Audio Overviews, but some features may be limited; see the mobile documentation.
Best Value
- Pixel Buds Pro use Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal to adapt to your ear and help block outside sounds, creating a quiet foundation so your music can shine.
- Pairs with any Bluetooth 4.0+ device, including Android, iOS, tablets, and laptops[7]
- The battery keeps up with your life, with up to 11 hours of listening time, or up to 31 hours with the charging case[2]; you can charge them wirelessly with Pixel Stand or other Qi-certified chargers[3]
- The battery keeps up with your life, with up to 11 hours of listening time, or up to 31 hours with the charging case[2]; you can charge them wirelessly with Pixel Stand or other Qi-certified chargers[3]
- Transparency mode helps you hear outside sounds in real time so you can be more aware of your surroundings, like when crossing the street
The overview is inaccurate
Use the audio as a preview or listening aid. Open the source documents, ask grounded NotebookLM chat questions and verify important claims against citations. Narrowing the source set and using a focused custom prompt can reduce irrelevant discussion, but it cannot guarantee correctness.
A source will not import
Check that the URL is public, the YouTube video has captions, the page is not paywalled, the file is under the documented limits and the recording is clear enough to transcribe.
Is a paid Google plan required?
Eligible users can start with NotebookLM’s free experience; quotas and higher limits vary. Google’s plan page currently lists Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month and says it includes higher NotebookLM access, including five times more Audio Overviews. Price, taxes, promotions, regional availability and benefits can change, so confirm the checkout page at Google AI plans. Schools and organizations should review managed Workspace or education options at Google for Education.
NotebookLM versus other audio tools
NotebookLM is the better fit when you need a source-grounded discussion, citations and multilingual study material. Voice-production services such as ElevenLabs are more suitable for polished narration and voice design, but are not a direct replacement for a research notebook. Microsoft Copilot is a general assistant, while Azure AI Speech is a developer speech service. ChatGPT can analyze documents and explain them, but should not be assumed to offer NotebookLM’s dedicated Studio artifact workflow or its documented 80-plus-language Audio Overview list.
Availability and age limits
NotebookLM is offered in supported countries and territories and may require the applicable age or age verification. Google’s Gemini Audio Overview help page says the Gemini feature is not currently available to users under 18. Missing controls can therefore reflect eligibility or rollout rather than a setup mistake. Check NotebookLM availability guidance and the Gemini help page before troubleshooting further.
The Bottom Line
The headline is directionally correct but needs attribution: Google’s April 2025 “more than 50 languages” milestone was for NotebookLM Audio Overviews. Current NotebookLM documentation lists more than 80 languages, while Gemini Apps offer a related Audio Overview workflow whose language coverage and controls may differ. Treat every generated discussion as an AI summary, not a substitute for checking the original sources.
