Google is rolling out a new capability inside the Gemini app on Android: the Utilities Extension. If you’ve noticed new UI, a different action flow, or a Utilities-related prompt in Gemini, this is likely what’s behind it.
This guide is built for the practical question most people have right now: how do you know whether it’s available on your phone, how do you turn it on, and what do you do when it doesn’t appear or doesn’t work?

What the Utilities Extension is (and what it changes in Gemini)
The Utilities Extension is an add-on feature that lets Gemini perform specific “utility” style actions rather than only answering questions. Think of it as Gemini being able to trigger tools-like behavior—often tied to your device context—while staying inside the Gemini experience.
Instead of you hopping between apps for small chores, the Utilities Extension is designed to route requests through Gemini and handle the task in-line. The exact set of utilities can vary by region and rollout status, but the pattern is consistent: you ask for something concrete, Gemini offers a utility-capable path, then executes within the Gemini flow.

Who gets the rollout and what to check first
Rollouts like this usually happen gradually (server-side flags) and can be limited by app version, device compatibility, and account eligibility. That’s why you might see it on one phone and not on another right next to it.
Prerequisites to verify
- Android version: Most recent extension features target modern Android builds; in practice, you’ll often need Android 10+ for smooth integration.
- Gemini app up to date: Install the latest Google Gemini update from the Play Store.
- Google account: The rollout can be account-scoped. Sign in with the same Google account you normally use on your phone.
- Location services (when prompted): Some utilities behave differently depending on location, but it should only request permissions when relevant.
How to check if Utilities Extension is available on your Android
Start with the fastest “is it enabled for me?” checks. If you don’t see these UI elements, don’t assume your phone can’t support it—rolling updates can lag for days.
Check inside Gemini (UI-based)
- Open the Gemini app.
- Go to the conversation where you normally ask actionable prompts (or start a new chat).
- Look for a Utilities-related option such as a tool/extension label, a changed prompt style, or an inline suggestion like a utilities action.
- If you see it, try a simple concrete request (for example, “Create a checklist for packing for a 3-day trip”) and see if Gemini routes it through a utility path.
Check your app version (Play Store)
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Gemini.
- Tap Gemini in results, then look for the Version shown in the app’s details page (the exact number varies by release).
- If an Update button appears, install it and re-check inside the app.
How to enable and use Utilities Extension in the Gemini app
There isn’t one universal toggle for every rollout because Google can enable extensions via server-side configuration. Still, you can usually enable it through Settings, conversation controls, or by allowing prompts when Gemini asks for access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEnable through Gemini settings (when available)
- Open Gemini.
- Tap your profile icon or the More menu (three dots), depending on your UI.
- Go to Settings.
- Look for an option related to Extensions, Utilities, Tools, or Connected experiences.
- If a toggle is present, turn it On.
Enable by allowing permissions (when prompted)
Even when the extension is enabled, it may require permission grants for a specific action. If Gemini requests something like storage, calendar, or location for a utility task, accept only if the request matches what you asked for.
- Attempt a utility-appropriate request.
- If Gemini shows a permission prompt, review what it needs.
- Tap Allow (or Confirm) to proceed.
- Repeat the same request after granting access to confirm the extension is functioning.
Use it effectively: prompt patterns that work
Utilities Extension tends to respond best to concrete, bounded requests. You’ll get more reliable results when you provide inputs up front.

Common tasks you can expect from Utilities Extension
The rollout typically emphasizes utility-style actions that feel faster than typing everything manually. While the exact list can change, here are practical categories people look for when utilities arrive inside an assistant.
Task drafting and templates
Gemini can generate structured artifacts like checklists, schedules, shopping lists, or step-by-step plans.
Formatting and conversion
Expect improved handling of “turn this into that” requests—for example, rewriting notes into an email draft or reorganizing content into a table-like structure.
Device-aware actions
When permitted, utilities may interact with device capabilities to reduce friction (for example, handing off to an app flow). If you don’t see device-aware behavior, it may be a permissions or rollout gating issue.
Privacy, permissions, and data handling
When an assistant can execute actions inside utilities, you should treat permissions seriously—even if the UI feels lightweight. You control what Gemini can access, and you can revoke permissions at any time.

What to review in Android permissions
- Go to Settings → Apps → Gemini.
- Open Permissions.
- Check anything the extension might use (commonly Location, Files and media, Calendar, depending on what utilities you try).
- Revoke permissions you don’t need.
What not to do
Don’t grant broad access “just to test.” If a utility request only needs one narrow permission, keep it narrow. If an action asks for access that doesn’t match your request, stop and reassess.

If you don’t see the Utilities Extension UI or you can’t find any utilities-related control, it’s usually one of four things: rollout gating, app version lag, settings/permission restrictions, or a cache/data problem.
Try these checks in order
- Update Gemini from the Play Store, then fully close and reopen the app.
- Verify you’re signed in with the intended Google account.
- Restart your phone (yes, it matters for component refresh after extension rollouts).
- Clear Gemini cache (not data first).
Clear cache safely (Android)
- Open Settings → Apps → Gemini.
- Tap Storage.
- Select Clear cache.
- Reopen Gemini and check for Utilities again.
If cache doesn’t help
If clearing cache doesn’t work, you can consider clearing app data, but it will sign you out and reset local preferences. Only do this if you’re comfortable reconfiguring Gemini afterward.
- Settings → Apps → Gemini → Storage.
- Tap Clear data.
- Reopen Gemini and sign back in.
Fixes when Utilities Extension fails to run
Sometimes the extension is visible but the utility action errors out. That usually points to permissions, a temporary service outage, or a formatting mismatch in your request.
Common failure scenarios and what to try
- Permission blocked: Retry after granting the prompted permission, or verify in Android Settings → Apps → Gemini → Permissions.
- “Can’t access” error: Re-check the specific access the utility claims it needs (storage, calendar, etc.).
- Actions run but produce wrong format: Add explicit output instructions like “Return as a 1-page checklist with 10 bullets.”
- Repeat errors: Clear cache again, then wait 30–60 minutes in case the service-side rollout temporarily de-syncs.
Improve reliability with better prompts
If the extension supports structured tasks, your prompt should include structure: inputs, constraints, and output format. For example, ask for “a table with columns: Item, Quantity, Reason, Priority” instead of “organize my list.”

Alternatives if you don’t have Utilities Extension yet
You’re not stuck. Even without the extension, Gemini can still help with drafting, formatting, and planning. For action-heavy utilities, you can pair Gemini with the native apps on your phone.
Use Gemini for content, then execute in native apps
- Ask Gemini to generate the artifact (email draft, checklist, calendar plan).
- Copy it into the target app (Google Calendar, Notes, Files) manually.
- If the extension later appears, redo the most action-heavy tasks and compare results.
Use standalone utilities for device actions
For example, if a utility would typically touch files or documents, use the corresponding system app first, then ask Gemini to format what’s already there.

FAQs
Is Utilities Extension available on all Android phones?
No. Rollouts can depend on app version, device compatibility, and account eligibility. If you don’t see it yet, update Gemini and wait—server-side flags often change over time.
Will enabling Utilities Extension give Gemini access to everything on my phone?
It shouldn’t. Extensions typically request only the permissions they need for specific actions. You can review and revoke permissions in Android Settings → Apps → Gemini → Permissions.
Why can I see utilities suggestions but actions still fail?
Most failures come down to permissions, an incorrect output request (missing format/constraints), or a temporary service glitch. Grant the exact permission requested, then retry with a more specific prompt.

Should I clear app data to force the rollout?
Only as a last resort. Clear cache first. Clearing data can log you out and reset local preferences, but it can help when local app state is stuck.
How long does the rollout take to appear?
There’s no single schedule. For staggered releases, expect anything from a few days to longer, depending on region and server-side eligibility. Updating the app and restarting your phone are the only actions you can control.
Bottom Line
Gemini app’s Utilities Extension on Android is a practical upgrade: it aims to help Gemini perform concrete utility-style tasks inside the chat experience. Availability can lag, and permissions can gate what you can do.
If it’s not showing, update Gemini, check settings and permissions, clear cache, and retry. When it does appear, use specific prompts and verify permission requests so the extension works the way you expect.
