You can use Gemini-powered features in Google’s consumer app or select developer-facing model identifiers through the Gemini API.
What “Gemini AI models” means
Google DeepMind describes Gemini as a family of multimodal models trained on text, images, audio, and video. In plain terms, generative AI uses machine-learning models to produce content in response to a prompt. Google explains that an LLM-powered experience such as Gemini predicts likely next words based on the prompt and the text generated so far; that is a useful simplification, not a complete technical description of every model in the family. Google DeepMind’s Gemini technical report and Google’s explanation of generative AI provide further context.

The term can refer broadly to the underlying models, while Google also uses Gemini for consumer-facing products and services powered by them. The precise meaning depends on whether someone is talking about a model, an app feature, or a way to access the technology.
What kinds of Gemini models are there?
The Gemini API catalog groups models by generation, release status, and task. It includes general-purpose models and specialized offerings. The following are examples in Google’s catalog as marked last updated October 6, 2026; names and availability can change, so consult the live Gemini API model catalog for current identifiers.
#1 Best Overall
- General-purpose models: Models intended for a range of tasks, including text and reasoning.
- Audio and speech: Offerings for low-latency voice interactions, text-to-speech, and speech-to-text transcription.
- Image and video: Models for generating or editing images and generating video.
- Embeddings: Models that represent content in a form used in tasks such as search and similarity matching.
- Robotics: Specialized models listed for robotics-related applications.
Examples named in the catalog include Gemini 3.8 Live for low-latency voice experiences, Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS for text-to-speech, Gemini 3.5 Transcribe for speech-to-text, Nano Banana models for image generation and editing, Veo models for video generation, Gemini Embedding models, and Gemini Robotics models. These examples are time-sensitive, not a permanent or exhaustive inventory.
Gemini app models and API models are different access routes
The Gemini app is for end users; the Gemini API lets developers select models using developer-facing identifiers. An app’s model selection and an API model name are not interchangeable labels. App access, usage limits, available features, and API billing are separate considerations, so check the relevant documentation for the route you plan to use.

For consumer app users, Google describes three broad tiers:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Flash-Lite: An efficient option positioned for speed and everyday tasks such as summarization and brainstorming.
- Flash: A balance of speed and reasoning across a wide range of tasks.
- Pro: Google’s most advanced consumer option for demanding work such as complex math and coding; Google notes that it can take longer to respond.
These are Google’s descriptions, not independent benchmark results. Access and features may depend on plan and location. Google’s Gemini Apps limits and upgrades help page covers app access and limits; its Google AI plan page lists current plan details for the U.S. market. Plan benefits and pricing can change, and regional offers may differ.
How to choose a Gemini model or access route
Start with the job you need done rather than the model name. A consumer who wants to brainstorm or summarize can begin with the app’s available options; a developer integrating a task into software should select from the API catalog.
- Match the task and modality: Decide whether you need text and reasoning, coding help, image or video generation, speech, transcription, embeddings, or robotics capabilities.
- Consider speed and reasoning needs: Google positions Flash-Lite around efficiency, Flash as a speed-and-reasoning balance, and Pro for more demanding work. Those descriptions are not a guarantee of performance on your specific task.
- Check cost and limits for your route: App subscription limits and API billing are distinct; confirm the current terms for the app or API you will use.
- Check endpoint lifecycle before deployment: The API documentation distinguishes stable, preview, latest, and experimental names. Stable names refer to specific stable models; a “latest” alias can move to a newer release. Preview releases may have billing or rate-limit restrictions and may be deprecated with notice. Experimental endpoints can change and may not be suitable for production.
- Confirm availability: Model access can vary by plan, geography, and changing product availability.
For an API integration, verify the exact model identifier, release state, and lifecycle in Google’s model catalog before deployment rather than assuming a name or alias will remain unchanged.

Why model names and access can change
Google warns that “Model names, versions, and availability may change.” A catalog entry, app option, or plan feature should therefore be treated as current product information, not a permanent definition of Gemini. Check the official catalog and app help shortly before choosing an endpoint or relying on a particular feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFinally, Gemini output can be inaccurate or invented, or misunderstand a prompt. Google advises checking factual responses against Google Search and other sources. Treat model answers as material to evaluate, especially when accuracy matters.
