GeForce RTX 5090 vs. RTX 5080: Which GPU Is the Better Buy?

The RTX 5080 is the more sensible gaming buy for most people; the RTX 5090 is for buyers who can use its extra 4K performance or 32 GB of memory and justify the price and power demands.

For most buyers, the GeForce RTX 5080 is the better buy if it meets their gaming or creative-work needs at a price they can actually pay. The RTX 5090 is the choice for people who need its much higher top-end 4K performance or can put its 32 GB of memory to productive use—and are willing to pay substantially more and plan for higher power demands. The deciding factor is not launch MSRP; it is the gap between the two cards’ current checkout prices and the value you place on the 5090’s extra capability.

How much faster is the RTX 5090?

In GamersNexus’s 2025 review, the RTX 5090 was 30% to 68.9% faster than the RTX 5080 at 4K across the workloads it tested. That range is substantial, but it is not a promise of the same gain in every game: results depend on the title, settings, and test system.

What individual game results show

In the review’s 4K rasterized Black Myth: Wukong test, the RTX 5090 delivered 86 FPS and the RTX 5080 delivered 58 FPS. At 1440p in Dragon’s Dogma 2, the RTX 5080 reached 134 FPS—71% of the RTX 5090’s result. These are specific review results, not universal frame-rate estimates for your PC. What do the cards cost, and does the 5090 justify the premium?

NVIDIA launched both cards on January 30, 2025, with US prices of $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080. Those are historical launch prices, not current offers. In August 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported two different US price snapshots:

Tom’s Hardware, August 7 $4,381 $1,289 Tracked lowest prices reported by the publication
Tom’s Hardware, August 10 $4,699.99 $1,499.99 Newegg median prices reported by the publication

These are dated measurements, not guaranteed checkout prices or a single market-wide quote. The figures also come from different methods, so do not combine them into one “current price.” Check live stock, the final price, the seller, and the exact card model before deciding. Tom’s Hardware’s August 7 price report and its August 10 Newegg report explain those snapshots.

At the 2025 launch prices, the 5090 cost about twice as much as the 5080. The August 2026 snapshots show why the launch comparison is not enough: actual prices can shift the value calculation sharply. Compare the price difference at the moment of purchase with the performance you need. If the 5080 already meets your target resolution and frame rate, paying a large premium for the 5090 may bring little practical value. If you need the strongest performance in the tested 4K workloads, the extra cost may be worthwhile—provided the price fits your budget.

Does the RTX 5090’s extra memory matter?

The RTX 5080 reference specification lists 16 GB of GDDR7. Launch-review coverage reports 32 GB of GDDR7 for the RTX 5090, twice the capacity. That extra memory can matter for workloads that genuinely need it, including some compute and creative tasks; it is not an automatic gaming advantage. Choose based on the applications and projects you run, rather than assuming that more VRAM alone guarantees a better experience.

What power supply and case checks should you make?

NVIDIA lists 360 W total graphics power and 850 W required system power for the RTX 5080 reference configuration. The company notes that partner-card specifications vary and system power needs depend on the rest of the build. For the RTX 5090 Founders Edition, GamersNexus describes a design intended to handle 575 W or more. That figure is not a system-wide PSU recommendation, and the sources cited here do not establish a current official NVIDIA RTX 5090 system-PSU recommendation.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

Before buying either card, check the exact board manufacturer’s guidance and your complete PC configuration. In particular, confirm:

  • Recommended PSU capacity and quality for the selected card and the full system.
  • Power connector requirements and whether your PSU has the appropriate connections.
  • Card dimensions against your case’s available clearance.
  • Whether your cooling and airflow setup suit the card.

Do not choose a PSU from a GPU wattage figure alone. The CPU and other components, the specific graphics card, and the PSU itself all affect system requirements.

Which card should you buy?

Choose the RTX 5080 if

  • You want high-end gaming performance and it meets your frame-rate target.
  • You do not need the best result in every 4K workload.
  • The 5090’s extra performance or memory would not justify its actual price premium for your use.

Choose the RTX 5090 if

  • You need the strongest 4K performance represented by the cited tests and accept that results vary by game.
  • Your compute or creative work can benefit from 32 GB of memory.
  • The added capability is worth the live price difference, higher power demands, and build-planning requirements.

Neither card is a good value at any price. If current listings put the 5090 far above the 5080, buy it only when you can identify a specific workload or performance target that benefits from the difference. Conversely, if the 5080 is itself priced well above its historical launch price, reassess whether it still makes sense for your budget rather than treating its lower price relative to the 5090 as proof of value.

What is known about RTX 5090 availability?

A Tom’s Hardware story published October 10, 2026, described a purported production halt based on an unverified factory notice and leaker posts. The story said NVIDIA had made no official announcement and noted that existing inventory could remain in the channel. That does not establish that NVIDIA has discontinued the card. Treat availability claims as unconfirmed unless NVIDIA announces a change. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report on the production-halt rumor.
