Which Gears of War game should I play first? Start with Gears of War: Reloaded. It remasters the original 2006 game, giving you the story’s clearest starting point in a release that Xbox describes as the definitive version of the original. Then play Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5. Judgment is an optional prequel, not the best first game for a new player.
What order should you play the Gears of War games in?
- Gears of War: Reloaded (the remaster of the original game)
- Gears of War 2
- Gears of War 3
- Gears of War 4
- Gears 5
This is the straightforward path through the main story. Xbox’s franchise page lists the games, and its descriptions establish Gears of War 4 as the start of a new saga and Gears 5 as its continuation. You can play Judgment as an optional side trip after the first game.

Why start with Gears of War: Reloaded?
Reloaded is a remaster of the original Gears of War, not a new numbered sequel. The first game is where the main story begins; the remaster brings that opening to current platforms and includes the post-launch content associated with Ultimate Edition, including a bonus campaign act and multiplayer additions. Xbox announced Reloaded for August 26, 2025, calling it the definitive release of the original. See the Xbox Wire announcement and original game listing.
Where does Judgment fit?
Gears of War: Judgment is a prequel set in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day, the event that begins the series’ conflict. That makes it useful context for someone who already likes the world, but its earlier setting does not make it the clearest entry point: a first-time player can follow the central saga by beginning with the original and returning to Judgment afterward. Xbox’s Judgment listing identifies its prequel setting.

How the main games differ in the play order
| Game | Why play it | Place in the order |
|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: Reloaded | The remastered version of the original story, with content associated with Ultimate Edition. | Start here. It is the original game remastered, not a sequel. Check your platform and current access options. |
| Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 | Continue the original Marcus Fenix-led saga. | Play after the first game and in that order. |
| Gears of War: Judgment | Explore events around Emergence Day. | Optional prequel; try it after the first game rather than starting here. |
| Gears of War 4 | Begins a later saga featuring JD Fenix, Kait, and Del. | Play after the original trilogy. |
| Gears 5 | Continues the later saga, with Kait at the center. | Play after Gears of War 4. |
The Xbox franchise page also lists Gears Tactics and Gears of War: E-Day. The official pages cited here do not establish their complete placement in a story chronology, so this guide leaves them out of the main sequence rather than guessing.
