E-Day keeps Gears’ cover-centered combat, but broadens how players move through a fight and use the battlefield. The Coalition says it rebuilt the cover system with more types, heights, and actions; Xbox Wire’s campaign preview describes sliding, jumping, vertical routes, and new ways to flank. Weapons and the story’s enemy context also change, while Meat Shields and Chainsaw Duels are not included at launch. These are announced design differences, not the result of a controlled side-by-side test.
Does E-Day still use cover-based combat?
Yes. Cover remains the organizing idea: players read the combat space and move from position to position rather than treating encounters as open arenas. The Coalition says E-Day has rebuilt that system, with more cover types, heights, and actions. Its update sums up the design priority this way: “Our battlefields are defined by their cover layout.” The Coalition’s July 31, 2026 gameplay update describes the changes.

More cover situations, including low ground
E-Day’s low-ground cover is meant to give players options when ordinary chest-high cover is unavailable or destroyed. A Gear can crouch behind low walls or debris, or drop prone after upper cover breaks. The Coalition says these positions are slower and leave the player more exposed, so they offer a situational alternative rather than a universally safer one.
The available descriptions establish an expanded cover system, but do not provide a complete mechanic-by-mechanic inventory of the original game’s cover actions. It is more accurate to say E-Day adds variety to the cover opportunities and transitions than to claim that the original lacked movement or cover play.

Can you slide, jump, and take vertical routes?
Xbox Wire’s August 25, 2026 campaign preview describes sliding under objects, around corners, and into cover, as well as jumping and using vertical routes. The preview’s examples include reaching elevated flanks and balconies. Together with the Coalition’s description of increased mobility and fluidity, these point to more ways to approach an encounter than simply advancing along ground-level cover.
That is a difference in available options, not evidence that E-Day is measurably faster. No comparative movement timings are provided, and the sources do not catalog every movement action in the original. Xbox Wire’s campaign hands-on preview reports these traversal details.

How do the weapons change?
The Coalition’s examples show both weapon-specific revisions and weapons tied to E-Day’s earlier point in the story. They do not establish that every weapon is a direct remake of an original counterpart.
| Weapon or detail | What is established about E-Day |
|---|---|
| Hammerburst | The Coalition says it draws on the original Gears version, fires an accurate six-round burst, and gains a higher rate of fire from an active reload. |
| Prototype Lancer | The Coalition describes a deeper magazine and higher rate of fire than recent Lancers. |
| Gnasher and Longshot | Xbox Wire’s preview identifies the Gnasher as a close-range weapon and the Longshot as a precision weapon. |
| Gut Puncher | Xbox Wire names it among E-Day’s new weapons. |
The Coalition’s gameplay update supplies the Hammerburst and Prototype Lancer details; Xbox Wire’s preview names the Gnasher, Longshot, and Gut Puncher.

The chainsaw Lancer has a story-specific history
E-Day takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War, during the first Locust emergence. In a 2024 Xbox Wire interview, The Coalition’s Nicole Fawcette explained that the chainsaw Lancer does not yet exist at that point in the timeline. The MK 1 Lancer shown in the reveal has a detachable bayonet, and E-Day is framed as telling the chainsaw Lancer’s origin. That chronology is not the same as saying the chainsaw weapon has been discarded from the series. The 2024 Xbox Wire interview covers the Lancer’s place in the story.
How does the setting affect encounters?
E-Day depicts the Locust as a newly encountered horror rather than a familiar battlefield threat. The Coalition also describes the Drone as redesigned to feel more formidable, while Xbox Wire’s preview discusses emergence holes as a reactive encounter element. Those details suggest a different encounter context and presentation; the available accounts do not prove that enemy AI or combat balance is superior to the original.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which familiar mechanics are missing at launch?
The Coalition specifically lists Meat Shields and Chainsaw Duels among legacy features not included at launch. Its update says it will consider what to deliver or improve after launch or in a future title, so “not included at launch” should not be read as a permanent removal. The update does not establish the status of every legacy mechanic. The Coalition’s Emergence Begins – Tomorrow update names these omissions.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The official material supports a clear design-direction comparison: E-Day retains cover as a core pillar, expands cover situations and movement options, adjusts or adds weapons, and places combat in the first days of the Locust war. It does not offer a complete side-by-side feature list or a controlled direct test against the original. For that reason, claims about faster combat, better balance, or universally improved enemy behavior go beyond what has been established.
