Reviews praise the game’s cover shooting, atmosphere and cooperative appeal, though they do not establish that Xbox as a whole is avoiding split-screen. The stronger argument is narrower: E-Day shows how valuable shared-screen campaign play can be.
What the reviews say about Gears of War: E-Day
Reviews sampled around launch are broadly positive about the return to cover-based combat, the grim Emergence Day setting and the fun of playing together. They differ, however, on campaign structure, enemy encounters and how much the game improves on earlier entries. These are selected reviews, not a formal review-aggregate analysis.

Co-op, atmosphere and combat are the clearest strengths
Windows Central calls E-Day “a fantastic co-op shooter” and praises its weapons, its return to the series’ familiar feel and its shift toward horror. The review also describes the opening as a story of war, survival and desperation. Read Windows Central’s review-in-progress.
GamesRadar+ praises the cover-shooter combat and the game’s depiction of Kalona’s destruction and civilian experience. Its review-in-progress described E-Day as “the best cover shooter I’ve played since the series’ Xbox 360-era heyday.” At the time of access, the publication said it still planned to cover multiplayer and had not assigned a final score. The campaign is not an unqualified success
Windows Central criticizes sections it describes as “open-but-not-actually-open,” along with some large enemies that feel unresponsive or like bullet sponges. Those criticisms matter because co-op appeal does not automatically make every campaign encounter work well. GamesRadar+’s coverage was still in progress when accessed, so it should not be treated as a completed multiplayer assessment.
Why split-screen is the feature worth noticing
Xbox’s official game page confirms three ways to play the campaign: solo, two-player split-screen on console, or online co-op for up to four players. That makes E-Day usable both as a conventional solo shooter and as a shared-screen game on one console. Xbox’s official page lists the campaign modes.

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Split-screen changes the practical meaning of co-op. Two people can play together on a single Xbox and display, without each needing a separate console and online connection. It is not the same experience as four-player online play, but it gives the campaign a local option that many cooperative games do not necessarily provide. That practical choice is the basis for the “one Xbox keeps avoiding” argument: E-Day makes a case for local co-op, not proof of a company-wide trend.
The official evidence here establishes E-Day’s split-screen support; it does not establish how often Xbox games generally include the feature. So the title’s broad phrasing works best as criticism or advocacy, not as a verified claim about Xbox’s entire release slate. The concrete point is that this game includes a mode with clear value for players sharing a room.

Does the game deliver on its co-op promise?
The sampled reviews give a credible reason to consider E-Day as a co-op shooter: Windows Central expressly praises playing together, while the official listing confirms local split-screen and online campaign options. But the reviews do not establish that every encounter or campaign stretch is equally strong. The most useful expectation is a cover shooter whose atmosphere and cooperative play are prominent attractions, with some campaign-structure and large-enemy criticism to weigh against them.
The official Gears of War page also acknowledges that launch does not include every legacy feature from the series, stating: “The trade-off being that including every legacy feature from Gears of War was not possible for launch.” This is a team statement, not a named individual’s comment.
