Gears of War: E-Day on PC: What RTX Mega Geometry Adds

Darragh Murphy’s PC hands-on reports about 50 FPS at 4K High on an RTX 5070 and highlights RTX Mega Geometry’s reflections. Here’s what the feature requires and what the result does—and doesn’t—tell PC players.

In a Tom’s Guide hands-on published October 2, 2026, Darragh Murphy reports that Gears of War: E-Day ran at about 50 frames per second at 4K on High settings using a GeForce RTX 5070 PC—and that NVIDIA’s RTX Mega Geometry made the game’s reflected light and environmental detail especially striking. Those are one writer’s observations on one system, not a performance guarantee for every PC.

What RTX Mega Geometry does in E-Day

NVIDIA describes RTX Mega Geometry as a way to ray trace Unreal Engine Nanite geometry. In practical terms, the feature is intended to let ray tracing account for highly detailed scene geometry, supporting more detailed lighting, shadows and reflections. NVIDIA says enabling it requires a GeForce RTX GPU with at least 12 GB of VRAM; that is a requirement for this feature, not a stated minimum requirement to play the game. NVIDIA’s E-Day feature page has the vendor’s description.

The hands-on article’s strongest examples are specific environmental details rather than a blanket claim that every scene changes dramatically: fluorescent lights reflected across a grocery-store floor, and debris visible in a blood-smeared window. Murphy found the reflections and lighting helped make the ruined spaces feel more convincing, particularly during quieter exploration. That is a subjective visual assessment, not an independent image-quality test. Read Murphy’s full Tom’s Guide hands-on.

How the PC hands-on performed

Murphy says he played for more than 12 hours on a gaming PC supplied by Quoted Tech Frontier. Its reported configuration was an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 and 32 GB of RAM. At 4K with High settings, he reports around 50 FPS and says that resolution taxed the system, although gameplay felt smooth to him. The article does not establish results for other GPUs, graphics settings or resolutions.

Murphy also reports that turning RTX Mega Geometry on did not appear to reduce performance on his machine. That observation applies to his RTX 5070 test system and play session; it does not show that enabling the feature has no performance cost on other hardware. NVIDIA publishes separate RTX 50 Series frame-rate claims on its feature page, using DLSS 4.5 and a fixed 6X frame-generation multiplier. Those are NVIDIA’s vendor benchmarks under its stated conditions, not Murphy’s measurements or an independent comparison.

What you need to enable the feature—and what you do not

  • For RTX Mega Geometry: NVIDIA specifies a GeForce RTX GPU with at least 12 GB of VRAM.
  • For the game generally: Xbox has not made RTX Mega Geometry a universal requirement in the cited feature announcement. The 12 GB threshold is specifically for enabling that RTX feature, not evidence that every PC player needs an RTX card.
  • For graphics scaling: Xbox lists AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR and Intel XeSS for compatible systems, alongside NVIDIA’s RTX integration. The PC version is therefore not limited to NVIDIA upscaling options. Support and results depend on the compatible hardware and options available in the game.

Xbox says the game is built with Unreal Engine 5 and DirectX 12, includes hardware ray tracing, and is being optimized across a broad range of PC hardware. NVIDIA is Xbox’s exclusive PC partner for GeForce RTX integration, optimization and launch support, but that partnership does not make RTX Mega Geometry necessary to play. Xbox Wire’s PC announcement outlines the engine, partnership and other listed PC technologies.

How to judge whether RTX Mega Geometry is right for your PC

Start with the feature threshold, then consider the resolution and performance you want. A card that meets the VRAM requirement can enable the feature, but that alone does not establish how smoothly it will run at 4K or at a particular quality preset. Murphy’s roughly 50 FPS result is a useful single-system reference, not a forecast for another PC.

  • Check your graphics card’s VRAM capacity against NVIDIA’s 12 GB minimum for RTX Mega Geometry.
  • Decide whether you value the added ray-traced detail enough to try it, especially in scenes where reflections and lighting are prominent.
  • Use the game’s available graphics and upscaling options to find a suitable balance on your own system. Xbox lists FSR, TSR and XeSS for compatible hardware.
  • Compare performance at your target resolution and settings rather than assuming the test result or NVIDIA’s vendor benchmarks will match your setup.

What E-Day is, and when PC players can access it

Gears of War: E-Day is an origin story set 14 years before the first Gears of War, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde emerges. Beyond the campaign, Xbox describes Horde Siege as a 12-player PvE mode and Versus as 4v4 PvP. The mode details provide broader game context; they were not part of Murphy’s PC graphics assessment. Xbox Wire’s June feature includes the premise and mode details.
