Google is rolling a new label for Pixel users: Gboard’s Assistant voice typing now shows up as Advanced features. The wording is easy to miss, but it usually signals that you’re using a more capable voice workflow than basic dictation.
This guide covers what the update likely changes, how to enable it, which settings matter, and what to do when the feature doesn’t appear or voice recognition behaves poorly.

What Advanced features means for voice typing
On Pixel, Gboard’s Assistant voice typing is designed to go beyond “dictate words” and behave more like an assistant-style input method. When it’s labeled Advanced features, you can typically expect enhancements such as more reliable punctuation, better intent handling (depending on language and region), and improved accuracy during longer dictation.
Because rollouts vary by region, account, and device generation, the exact capabilities can differ. The practical goal is consistent: get higher recognition quality and smarter voice-driven text input while you type.

Prerequisites on Pixel (Android, languages, and permissions)
Before troubleshooting, confirm the basics. Assistant voice typing usually depends on up-to-date app components and the right language model.
1) Update Gboard and Android
Update Gboard in the Google Play Store, then confirm your phone is on a reasonably current Android version (many Pixel updates land around Android 14 and later, depending on the model).
To check Gboard’s version: open Play Store → search Gboard → confirm you have the latest version installed.

Not every language gets the same voice experience. If you’re dictating in a language that isn’t fully supported for Assistant-style voice typing, Advanced features may not show or may behave like standard dictation.
3) Ensure microphone permission is granted
Without mic permission, you’ll get either no voice typing button or immediate failures.

How to turn on Gboard Assistant voice typing Advanced features
The label appears inside Gboard settings. If you don’t see it, the fix is usually an app update, a language change, or a rollout delay.
Step-by-step: enable Advanced features
- Open any app where Gboard is active (Messages, WhatsApp, Gmail, Notes, etc.).
- Tap a text field to bring up the keyboard.
- On the Gboard toolbar, tap the Gboard Settings gear icon.
- Go to Voice typing (wording may appear as Voice or Text correction depending on version).
- Look for Assistant voice typing.
- Toggle Advanced features to On.
If you see only “Voice typing” without “Assistant voice typing,” update Gboard and try again after restarting your phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Go to Settings → System → Languages & input.
- Tap Virtual keyboard → Manage keyboards.
- Confirm Gboard is enabled.
- Set Gboard as the active keyboard if prompted.
Config options you should check after enabling
Once Advanced features is enabled, the difference you feel depends on a few surrounding settings.
Language and voice typing input mode
In Gboard settings, review your Languages list and ensure the target language matches what you’ll speak. Also check whether your voice typing mode has options for punctuation or “enhanced” dictation.
Punctuation and formatting preferences
Look for voice settings related to punctuation, capitalization, or formatting. Assistant-style dictation typically performs better when punctuation options are enabled.
Multilingual dictation
If you speak in two languages, set up both languages in Gboard and confirm the correct one is active when you start talking. Misaligned language selection is one of the most common causes of “it sounds like standard dictation” or poor results.

Advanced features are most noticeable in everyday messaging, longer drafts, and situations where you want fast, accurate input without touching the screen much.
Messaging and quick replies
Use Advanced features when you need accurate wording and punctuation—especially for short replies that include names, addresses, or mixed vocabulary.
Long-form dictation
For paragraphs, Advanced features tend to outperform basic dictation by maintaining better continuity across longer sentences. Still, speak in chunks (1–2 sentences at a time) if you notice drift.
Hands-minimized editing
If the keyboard offers selection/preview while dictating, you’ll typically get fewer corrections than with basic mode. If you don’t see previews, your Gboard version may not fully support the UI layer yet.

What can break: troubleshooting when Advanced features won’t work
If you don’t see Advanced features, or it turns on but recognition fails, use the checklist below.
1) Advanced features toggle is missing
This is often a rollout or compatibility issue. Try in order.
- Update Gboard to the latest version from the Play Store.
- Reboot the Pixel and open a text field to trigger keyboard loading.
- Switch the Gboard language to a supported one (then switch back if needed).
- Check that Gboard is your active keyboard in Android keyboard settings.
2) Microphone won’t start or voice typing never begins
- Verify the Microphone permission is enabled for Gboard.
- Close and reopen the keyboard by switching to a different app and back.
- Clear app cache for Gboard: Settings → Apps → Gboard → Storage → Clear cache.
- If it still fails, clear data (you may need to reconfigure settings afterward).
3) Recognition is inaccurate or punctuation is wrong
- Confirm you selected the correct dictation language in Gboard.
- Check for a mismatch between keyboard language and what you’re speaking.
- Speak slower and separate names/technical terms (dictation can struggle with dense phrases).
- Try a different app to rule out app-specific microphone conflicts.
4) It behaves like basic dictation
Advanced features may still be active, but you might not see obvious differences. To confirm, look for any Assistant-specific behaviors in the voice typing UI. If the UI never shows Assistant voice options, focus on updates and language support.
Advanced comparisons: Assistant voice typing vs basic voice typing
Here’s how to think about the difference, so you can decide when to use Advanced features and what results to expect.

| Feature | Basic voice typing | Assistant voice typing with Advanced features |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Short dictation and quick messages | More natural dictation, longer input, and improved formatting |
| Punctuation | Often partial; depends on language | Typically more consistent when enabled/supported |
| Intent handling | Primarily transcribes what you say | More likely to interpret speaking patterns as assistant-style input |
| Language dependence | Varies, but generally available | Can be limited by rollout, region, and language packs |
Privacy and data controls to review
Voice typing can involve sending audio or derived text to services depending on configuration, language, and available features. Review controls so you’re comfortable with how it’s used.

Check Android and Google privacy settings
- Open Settings → Privacy (or Privacy & security).
- Review options related to Speech, Voice, and Personalization.
- In Google settings, confirm how voice data is used for personalization (wording varies by Android release).
If you’re using a work profile or managed device, some settings may be controlled by your organization.
Common mistakes that cause poor recognition or no “Assistant” features
- Wrong active language: Dictating Spanish with an English keyboard layout, or vice versa.
- Mic permission revoked: Especially after app updates or permission resets.
- Outdated Gboard: The label may not exist in older versions.
- Trying in the wrong field: Some fields (passwords, certain secure inputs) block dictation behavior.
- Background audio interference: Headphones, calls, or noisy environments can degrade accuracy.
FAQs
Why can’t I see Advanced features for Assistant voice typing?
Most common causes are Gboard not updated, language not supported for Assistant-style voice typing, or rollout not reaching your device/account yet. Update Gboard, reboot, and confirm your dictation language in Gboard settings.
Does Advanced features work on all Pixel models?
It depends on compatibility, regional rollout, and language support. Older or heavily customized configurations may receive updates later. If the toggle doesn’t exist, you’ll typically see it after updating and waiting for the staged release.
Is Advanced features the same as voice typing punctuation?
Not exactly. Punctuation is a part of voice typing quality, but Advanced features generally indicates a higher-capability assistant-style voice workflow. You should still check punctuation/formatting options inside Gboard to get the best results.
Will my dictation be sent to Google?
Voice typing can involve network services depending on feature availability, language, and device settings. Check Android/Google privacy settings related to speech and voice personalization, and review any managed-device policies.
How do I improve accuracy if it keeps mishearing names?
Spell tricky names or use pauses: dictate the name as separate words. Also confirm that you’re dictating in the correct language and consider adding those terms to contacts—Gboard can benefit from your existing data where supported.
Bottom Line
Gboard’s Assistant voice typing labeled Advanced features is a Pixel-side improvement aimed at making voice dictation more reliable, especially for punctuation and longer input. If you don’t see it, update Gboard, verify microphone permission, and confirm language support.
Once enabled, treat voice like a drafting tool: speak in short chunks, review the text immediately, and use the in-keyboard settings to tune punctuation and formatting for the way you write.
