Gboard suggestions are now pills, getting simplified settings

Gboard’s suggestions are changing shape. Instead of long, line-based suggestion rows, some users now see suggestions as pill-shaped chips—quick to scan, easy to tap, and designed to reduce visual clutter.

At the same time, Gboard’s settings are getting simplified. That means fewer toggles in the same place, clearer labels, and (for some devices) a more guided workflow for controlling predictions, personalization, and typing behaviors.

What it means when Gboard suggestions become pills

“Pills” are just a UI treatment for the suggestion bar. Functionally, Gboard is still doing prediction and correction—it’s the presentation that’s different.

In most builds that show pill suggestions, you’ll notice three practical changes:

  • More tappable chips: suggestions appear as rounded pills, typically with clearer boundaries between options.
  • Less horizontal scanning: chips can be easier to compare quickly than a dense row of text.
  • Cleaner transitions: when you pause typing or change words, the suggestion set refreshes in a more visually structured way.

If you rely on muscle memory for the old layout, it’s normal to feel “off” for a day or two. The underlying logic remains Gboard’s: it learns from usage and uses language models to propose next words or corrections.

Where to find the new simplified settings

Google is gradually reorganizing Gboard settings to reduce the number of places you have to check. The exact labels vary by Android version and Gboard build, but the path usually stays consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start from your phone’s keyboard settings

  1. Open Settings on Android.
  2. Go to System > Languages & input (or General management depending on your brand).
  3. Tap On-screen keyboard > Gboard.
  4. Open Preferences or Text correction (wording may differ).

In the updated experience, you’ll often see fewer “deep” toggles and more consolidated options—especially around suggestions, autocorrect behavior, and personalization.

Check for in-app settings inside Gboard

  1. Open any app where the keyboard appears.
  2. Long-press the comma (,) or tap the Gboard icon (the gear may appear depending on version).
  3. Look for Keyboard settings, Text correction, or Preferences.

If you don’t see the same options you used to, that’s usually the “simplified settings” change: some controls moved, renamed, or got bundled under a single section.

How to control suggestion behavior (pills + predictions)

Pill suggestions reflect prediction results. If you want fewer suggestions, more correction, or less personalization, these settings are where you’ll focus.

Turn suggestions on/off

Look for an option labeled something like Show suggestions or Text suggestions. If available, toggle it off to stop the suggestion chips from appearing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Gboard.
  2. Go to Text correction (or Preferences).
  3. Find Show suggestions / Text suggestions.
  4. Toggle it Off.

When suggestions are off, you should still see the autocorrect/correction behavior you’ve configured, but fewer “next word” proposals.

Adjust next-word prediction and typing behavior

Common options you may see (names vary) include next-word prediction, autocorrect, and space/capitalization behavior. If your pills feel too “eager,” dial back prediction features first.

  1. In Gboard settings, open Text correction.
  2. Adjust these in this order:
  3. Autocorrect: turn down if it frequently “fixes” your intended words.
  4. Next-word predictions: reduce if it constantly proposes wrong follow-up words.
  5. Block offensive words (if present): affects what appears as a suggestion.
  6. Capitalize words / Auto-capitalization: optional, but it changes how suggestions look and match your sentence.

If you see only a smaller set of toggles, the remaining behavior is probably controlled by a consolidated “Suggestions” or “Typing” category.

Manage personalization and privacy-related options

Pill suggestions can feel “smarter” when personalization is on. If you want the keyboard to stop learning from your usage, turn off personalization-related features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for items like:

  • Personalized suggestions
  • Improve Google keyboard
  • Usage data or Keyboard personalization (wording varies)
  1. Open Gboard settings.
  2. Go to Personalization or Privacy (some builds separate them).
  3. Toggle off any options that explicitly mention learning/personalization.
  4. Confirm any prompts.

After changes, it may take some time (and a restart of typing in a few apps) before suggestions fully reflect the new behavior.

How to use pill suggestions efficiently

The fastest workflow with pill suggestions is still the same: glance, tap, continue. The main difference is visual scanning.

Speed tips for tapping the right pill

  • Tap the suggestion pill as soon as it matches your intended word. Avoid backspacing first—this reduces “undo” churn.
  • Use long-press on suggestions if your build supports it. Some versions show actions like adding to dictionary or selecting alternatives.
  • Watch the center of the pill row: predictions closest to your cursor context typically update first.

When predictions feel wrong

If a specific phrase keeps showing up, you can correct the behavior by rejecting it and training the keyboard indirectly through what you actually type.

  1. Type the correct word/phrase manually (don’t tap the wrong pill).
  2. After a few attempts, the incorrect suggestion should stop dominating.
  3. If it persists, check for spelling/shortcut conflicts or language mis-detection.

For persistent wrong corrections, revisit Autocorrect and Next-word predictions settings.

Common issues and fixes

UI changes can leave users confused, especially if the update is staged. Below are the most common complaints and the fastest ways to resolve them.

Pills don’t appear (or show as plain text)

If your build still shows the older suggestion row, it may simply be a rollout timing issue. Alternatively, a settings flag or theme/layout change could affect the keyboard.

  1. Confirm you’re on the latest Gboard build (see “Update checklist” below).
  2. In Gboard settings, check Preferences for any option affecting “layout,” “appearance,” or “theme.”
  3. Restart the keyboard by closing and reopening an app.
  4. Restart your phone if the layout doesn’t refresh.

Update checklist: Open Google Play Store > Manage apps & device > Updates available > update Gboard. After updating, re-check keyboard appearance in a text field.

Predictions stuck, laggy, or inaccurate

Stuck predictions usually come from stale cache, aggressive battery optimization, or an overloaded language model context.

  1. Disable battery optimization for Gboard: Settings > Battery > Unrestricted / Not optimized > add Gboard.
  2. Clear keyboard cache (safe approach): Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage > Clear cache.
  3. Reboot and retest in one app first (notes or a messaging app are easiest).

If accuracy is the issue (not performance), turn down Autocorrect or Next-word predictions and verify the keyboard language selection.

Settings options missing after an update

Simplified settings can “remove” options you used to find in the same screen. That doesn’t always mean the feature is gone.

  1. Open Gboard settings and check neighboring tabs: Preferences, Text correction, Personalization, and Privacy.
  2. Look for renamed toggles: for example, “suggestions” may now be grouped under a single “Typing” category.
  3. If your phone uses multiple Gboard profiles (rare but possible), switch to the correct language/keyboard profile and check again.

If you still can’t locate it, you can compare using an older device profile or reinstall Gboard after backing up any relevant settings (Gboard dictionaries may require additional steps depending on your setup).

Languages or keyboard layouts not matching expectations

Pill suggestions are language-aware. If your device is set to the wrong language, you might see irrelevant suggestions or odd autocorrections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the keyboard, tap the globe / language icon (usually near the spacebar).
  2. Select the intended language for the message.
  3. In Gboard settings, verify your enabled languages match what you type most.

If you use multiple languages frequently, consider reducing enabled languages to the ones you actually need—this can improve prediction relevance.

Android vs. keyboard-wide behavior: what actually changes

The “pills” UI is a keyboard presentation change. It doesn’t change how Android handles input methods, permissions, or system-level text fields.

What can change—because it’s part of Gboard’s logic—is:

  • Suggestion frequency (depending on predictions and corrections settings).
  • How suggestions update (chip layout refresh patterns).
  • How personalization affects top candidates.

If you’re testing behavior, use the same app, the same language, and a consistent typing pattern. Otherwise, you’ll mistake normal prediction variance for a setting issue.

Roll back or switch keyboards if you need an older layout

If you dislike the pill UI and need the older suggestion row, you have a few options—each with tradeoffs.

Option A: Update to the latest version first

This sounds obvious, but many “layout mismatch” complaints are resolved in later Gboard builds. Search Gboard in Play Store and ensure you’re fully updated.

Option B: Switch to another keyboard (if pills are a dealbreaker)

If you need a different UI immediately, you can replace Gboard temporarily with another installed keyboard. On Android, go to Settings > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard to change default.

Be aware: switching keyboards may affect autocorrect, personalization, and dictionary behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option C: Reinstall Gboard (to reset UI/state)

  1. Uninstall Gboard.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Install Gboard from Play Store again.
  4. Re-open a text field and re-check the suggestion layout.

Reinstalling won’t always remove your saved dictionary, but it can reset some keyboard state. If you depend heavily on custom words, verify your dictionary settings after reinstall.

FAQ: Gboard pills and simplified settings

Will pill suggestions change my typing or autocorrect accuracy?

The pills are primarily a UI change. Accuracy depends on your Autocorrect and prediction settings, plus enabled languages and personalization.

Can I bring back the old suggestion row layout?

Usually there’s no official toggle for the old layout. The most reliable path is updating (sometimes you’ll get a layout match), or reinstalling, or using a different keyboard if the UI itself is your blocker.

Why did my settings screens look different after an update?

Simplified settings can move toggles into categories with clearer labels. If an option seems missing, check adjacent sections like Text correction, Preferences, Personalization, and Privacy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do pills work the same way on every Android version?

Not always. Keyboard UI rollout timing, device manufacturers, and Android versions can affect which layout features you see first. The core behavior (suggestions and corrections) stays similar.

My suggestions are worse after I turned off personalization. Is that normal?

Yes. Personalized suggestions help rank candidates based on your usage patterns. Turning it off can reduce relevance until you re-type consistently with the new preferences.

Bottom Line

Gboard suggestions becoming pills is mainly a presentation upgrade—rounded, tappable chips that make predictions easier to scan. The simplified settings aim to make control more straightforward, but it can temporarily hide familiar toggles by moving or renaming them.

If pills don’t appear or predictions feel off, verify your Gboard build via Play Store, re-check Text correction and Personalization settings, and confirm your active keyboard language. That combination fixes most “it changed” issues quickly.
