Google is rolling out a dedicated keyboard control in Gboard: a Font size setting designed to make the text you type and the keys you interact with easier to read. If you’ve ever bumped up your system font but still felt cramped on the keyboard, this is the missing knob.
This guide covers what the setting changes, where to find it on Android and iPhone/iPad, what to do if you don’t see it yet, and how it differs from system-wide font and display settings.

What the Gboard Font size setting actually does
The new Gboard Font size setting adjusts the text sizing inside the Gboard keyboard UI—most visibly the key labels and some keyboard text elements. In practical terms, it’s meant to improve readability without forcing you to change your whole phone’s typography.
Depending on your device and app, the effect is typically limited to the keyboard UI. It may not perfectly match what you see with system font scaling, because keyboard layouts often use their own sizing rules.

Prerequisites and rollout reality (why you might not see it yet)
App rollouts aren’t instant. You may see the setting only after Gboard updates on your device. If you’re on an older Gboard build, the toggle can be absent entirely.
- Android: Update Gboard from the Google Play Store, then check Settings in the Gboard keyboard.
- iPhone/iPad: Update Gboard from the App Store, then check the keyboard’s settings screen.
- Do not confuse it with: system Font size, Display size, or Accessibility text scaling.
If you can’t find it after updating, the feature might not be enabled for your account or region yet, or it could be staged gradually.
How to change Gboard keyboard Font size on Android
On Android, the setting lives inside Gboard’s own preferences. The exact labels can vary slightly by Android skin and Gboard version, but the path is consistent.

- Set it to your preferred value (typically a slider or steps like Small/Default/Large).

If you can’t find the setting in Settings
Sometimes the feature is only discoverable from within Gboard itself.
- Open an app where you can type.
- Bring up the Gboard keyboard.
- Tap the Gboard gear icon (or press and hold the comma/enter keys, depending on your layout).
- Go to Preferences.
- Check again for Font size.
How to change Gboard keyboard Font size on iPhone and iPad
On iOS, Gboard settings are handled differently because iOS restricts keyboard configuration to its own keyboard UI.
- Open the Gboard keyboard in any typing app.
- Tap the Gboard settings button (commonly a gear icon) on the keyboard toolbar.
- Go to Text correction or Preferences (wording varies by version).
- Find Font size.
- Adjust the size to what’s comfortable for your eyes.
- Test by typing in the same app.
If you don’t see Font size on iOS after updating Gboard, it’s likely still rolling out to your device group.
What to expect: characters, menus, and input behavior
When you increase keyboard font size, you should see the key labels and keyboard text scale up, which can make tapping more accurate—especially on smaller screens or for users with low vision.
Here’s what commonly changes (and what usually doesn’t):
| Area | Usually affected by Gboard Font size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Key labels (letters/numbers) | Yes | Primary benefit—easier to read, often easier to tap. |
| Keyboard layout density | Sometimes | On very large sizes, some layouts may feel more spaced out. |
| Autocomplete strip text | Varies | Some builds scale more visibly than others. |
| Cursor movement and swipe typing | No | Gesture behavior should remain the same. |
| Text size inside the app you’re typing into | No | That’s controlled by the app and system text settings. |
Troubleshooting: when the setting is missing or doesn’t work
If the Font size option doesn’t appear, or the keyboard doesn’t change after you adjust it, run through these checks.

1) Confirm you’re updated to a recent Gboard build
Open the relevant store (Google Play Store or App Store), update Gboard, and then restart the keyboard by closing and reopening the app you’re typing in.
- Update Gboard.
- Force close the typing app (Android) or reopen it (iOS).
- Re-open the keyboard and check the setting again.
2) Verify you’re using Gboard, not another keyboard
If you have multiple keyboards installed, you might be editing the wrong one.
- Open the keyboard switch menu.
- Confirm the active keyboard is Gboard.
- Adjust Font size and test immediately in the same field.
3) Clear keyboard cache (Android only, when changes lag)
Some Android devices hold onto old UI resources. Clearing app data can be overkill, so start gently.
- Go to Settings > Apps (or Applications).
- Search for Gboard.
- Tap Storage.
- Choose Clear cache (avoid clearing data unless needed).
- Restart your phone and test again.
4) The feature may be staged to your account/region
If you updated and you still don’t see it, it might simply not be enabled for your device group. In that case, wait a few days and re-check the same settings page after another Play Store/App Store refresh.
5) Large sizes may clip on certain keyboard modes
If you see misalignment or clipping, try a smaller value (e.g., step down one notch), then test on both letters and numbers modes. Some modes render differently.

Use Android Display size / Font size (system-wide)
Increase system scaling so the content in the app grows too. This is often the biggest win when you’re reading chat messages, documents, or email.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Display.
- Adjust Font size and/or Display size.
Use iOS Accessibility Larger Text
On iPhone and iPad, Accessibility can scale system text and improve readability in most apps.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility.
- Tap Display & Text Size.
- Turn on Larger Text and adjust the slider.
Try other Gboard visual options
Depending on your build, Gboard may also include toggles that improve visibility and usability (like keypress sound or theme options). Use them to reduce eye strain.

Common mistakes that make it seem broken
- Changing keyboard size but testing in the wrong app: Some apps constrain layouts and may make it look like nothing changed.
- Using a different input method: If you’re not actively typing with Gboard, you’re adjusting the wrong settings.
- Expecting the setting to resize your typed text: Gboard Font size affects the keyboard UI, not the font in your messages or documents.
- Setting it too large: Maximum sizes can cause spacing differences that feel “off.”

People often adjust system font first, then wonder why the keyboard still feels cramped. Here’s how the controls differ.

FAQ
Does Gboard Font size change the font I send in messages
No. It’s a keyboard UI setting. It affects how the keyboard looks while typing, not the font style or size inside other apps’ text fields.
I updated Gboard but the Font size option still isn’t there. What should I do?
Confirm you’re using Gboard as the active keyboard, then wait a bit—rollouts are often staged. On Android, clearing Gboard cache can help if the UI doesn’t refresh.
Will this affect swipe typing and auto-correct suggestions?
It shouldn’t. Font size primarily changes visual scaling. Auto-correct and swipe behavior are separate systems that should remain consistent.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I set different font sizes for different keyboards or layouts?
Typically, Gboard Font size is a single setting that applies across its layouts. If your keyboard mode changes (numbers/symbols), the UI will scale to the same font setting but may look slightly different due to layout constraints.
Final Thoughts
Gboard’s new Font size setting is a small but meaningful quality-of-life upgrade: it targets the keyboard experience directly instead of forcing you to change everything system-wide. If you type a lot—or your eyes are tired—this is the most direct place to start.
Update Gboard, set a comfortable keyboard size, and then tune system text scaling if you still need larger readable content in apps.
