Google’s Gboard for Android is rolling out a new shortcut called Flick keys to enter symbols, designed to cut down the taps it takes to type punctuation and symbols.
Instead of repeatedly tapping the symbols key, you flick specific keys to get symbols on the fly—so typing stays continuous, especially when you’re moving between words and punctuation.

Why this matters for faster Android typing
On most Android keyboards, symbols typically require either tapping the ?123 (or symbol) key and then selecting a character. That’s one extra step every time you need punctuation-heavy text (chat, captions, code snippets, addresses).
With flick-to-symbols, you keep your cursor in the same place and reduce interruptions. The practical result is faster punctuation and fewer mode changes.

Prerequisites: what you need before it works
- Updated Gboard: you need the latest available version from the Google Play Store. Rolling features often appear in phases, so “latest” on your device may still differ from another person’s.
- Android: works on standard Android versions supported by Gboard (generally Android 6.0+ for most modern builds; verify in your Play Store listing).
- A language/layout that supports flick symbols: some languages and keyboard layouts receive gesture variants earlier or only for specific scripts.
If you don’t see it after updating, it’s usually a rollout timing issue or a layout/language limitation rather than a broken installation.
How to enable it in Gboard (Android)
Enable the shortcut from Gboard’s settings. The exact wording can vary slightly by Gboard version and Android skin, but the paths below are the common ones.

- Open Settings on your phone.
- Tap System (or General management on some devices).
- Tap Languages & input (or Keyboard).
- Tap On-screen keyboard > Gboard.
- Tap Preferences.
- Look for a gesture option related to symbol entry, such as Flick keys / Flick to enter symbols / Gesture typing.
- Turn it On.
If you don’t see the specific toggle, you may still have the feature available but hidden under a broader gesture setting. In that case, enable all related gesture options (for example, flick or glide typing) and test immediately in any app.
How to use Flick keys to enter symbols
The workflow is simple: you type normally, then flick on specific keys to insert punctuation or symbols.
- Open any app with a text field (Messages, WhatsApp, YouTube comment, email, notes).
- Bring up Gboard.
- Type a word as usual.
- When you need a symbol (for example, period, comma, question mark, exclamation, apostrophe, parentheses), perform a short flick on the relevant key instead of tapping ?123.
- If you don’t get the expected symbol, retry with a slightly different direction or a lighter swipe—gesture detection can be sensitive to how far and how fast you flick.
What to expect: you should see the symbol appear as you complete the flick gesture, typically without switching to a full symbols page.
Pro behavior: aim for a consistent flick length—too short can register as a tap, and too long can be treated like a navigation gesture.
Supported layouts, languages, and keyboards
Flick gestures are not universal across every language and keyboard layout. Gboard’s punctuation and symbol mapping is tied to the language pack you’ve enabled.

Troubleshooting when flick symbols don’t appear
If you’ve enabled the gesture option (or can’t find it) but flick-to-symbols still doesn’t work, try these steps in order.

Open Google Play Store > search Gboard > check for updates. Rolling features often ship to subsets of users first, even if you already have a near-latest build.
2) Restart Gboard by switching keyboards
Close the keyboard (remove focus from the text field), then reopen it. If that doesn’t help, briefly switch to another keyboard (Samsung Keyboard, SwiftKey, etc.), then switch back to Gboard.
3) Re-enable gesture typing in Gboard settings
Go back to Settings > Gboard > Preferences and toggle gesture-related options off and on. This forces Gboard to reinitialize its input behavior.
4) Test in a clean text field
Some apps use custom text controls that can behave differently (notably some search boxes, embedded web views, or form fields). Test in Messages, Notes, or a basic browser search bar.

5) Check language selection in Gboard itself
On Gboard, tap the globe or language icon on the keyboard and confirm the active layout. Then try flicking again for that specific language.
6) Clear cache for Gboard (last resort)
If gestures feel “stuck,” clearing cache can help. Go to Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage > Clear cache. Avoid “Clear data” unless you’re fine redoing preferences and sign-in state.
Common mistakes that make it feel broken
- Using the wrong direction: flick symbols depend on direction. If your flick produces a different character, adjust the swipe angle.
- Swiping too slowly: a slow drag can be interpreted as a touch/hold rather than a flick.
- Accidentally tapping: if your fingertip lands cleanly without a flick motion, you’ll get the letter behavior instead of the symbol variant.
- Relying on muscle memory from another feature: Gboard has multiple gesture behaviors (glide typing, delete gestures, etc.). Mixing them up is common during the first days after an update.
Alternatives if you can’t get the shortcut
If the feature hasn’t rolled to your device or your language layout, you still have reliable ways to type symbols fast.
Use the ?123 symbol layer
Tap ?123 to open punctuation and symbols, then select your character. This is the fastest option when you need a complex symbol you don’t know yet.

Long-press for symbol variants
Many keys support long-press variants (for example, apostrophes, quotes, dashes, parentheses). This can be quicker than switching layers if you only need one character.

Use Gboard’s Voice typing for punctuation
In many languages, saying “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” or “exclamation point” inserts punctuation. This helps when typing on mobile is slow due to accuracy issues.
Switch to a different keyboard mode temporarily
If you regularly type code or math-like text, consider a keyboard/language setting that emphasizes those punctuation characters, then switch back.
Quick comparison: flick symbols vs traditional symbol entry
| Method | Typical steps | Best for | Speed impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flick keys to enter symbols | Type word → flick key → symbol appears | Frequent punctuation in normal prose | Fewer interruptions, faster rhythm |
| ?123 symbol layer | Tap ?123 → choose symbol | Symbols you don’t use often | One extra mode change per symbol |
| Long-press key variants | Long-press → pick variant | One-off punctuation near the letter keys | Can be fast if you know the key |
Privacy and security considerations
Gboard is still a keyboard app, so it may request keyboard and input-related permissions required for typing and text prediction. The flick-to-symbols shortcut doesn’t change the fundamental privacy model—it’s a client-side gesture that affects character selection.

Bottom Line
Gboard’s Flick keys to enter symbols is a quality-of-life update aimed at reducing taps and keeping you in flow. Once enabled, it turns punctuation into a gesture you can repeat quickly while typing.
If you don’t see it right away, don’t assume it’s missing forever—update Gboard, confirm the active language/layout, and test in a basic text field. Most “it doesn’t work” cases are rollout timing or gesture sensitivity, not a device problem.
