If you’ve noticed Gboard looking a bit more “Material You” lately, it’s not just cosmetics. Google has been expanding how the keyboard adopts system colors (Material 3 / dynamic color) and, alongside that, reshaping parts of the settings UI so the controls are easier to find.
This guide breaks down what that usually means on Android 12, 13, and 14, where the settings moved to, and how to confirm you’re actually getting the new theme behavior. It also covers the most common post-update issues—because they’re predictable.

What the Gboard Material You + settings redesign actually changes
Material You styling in Gboard generally means the keyboard UI (backgrounds, key surfaces, suggestion chips, and other surfaces) picks up your device’s dynamic palette instead of sticking to a single fixed theme.

The settings redesign typically reorganizes toggles so theme and behavior controls are grouped more clearly. That can make it feel like options “moved,” even when they’re the same settings under a new layout.

Prerequisites: what you need for the new theming to show up
Material You relies on Android’s dynamic color system. If you’re on an OS version that doesn’t support dynamic color the same way, you might not see the new options or they may behave differently.
- Android: Android 12+ is where Material You is most relevant. Android 13 and 14 typically provide the smoothest dynamic behavior.
- Device theme engine: Your system theme must be using dynamic colors (often tied to Wallpaper & style).
- Gboard version: You’ll need a Gboard build that includes the updated theming and settings UI (varies by rollout).
Update Gboard to the latest version
Gboard features roll out gradually. If you’re not seeing extra Material You controls, updating is the first practical step.
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Gboard.
- Tap Update if available.
- Wait for installation to finish, then reopen Gboard after the update.
- Optional: confirm your version in Play Store (App details) or inside Gboard if the app shows a version field in settings.
Where to find the redesigned Gboard settings
The exact layout can vary by release and Android skin, but the entry points are usually the same: system settings for keyboard management, then in-app Gboard settings for behavior and look.
Open Gboard settings from Android
- Go to Settings.
- Tap System (or General management on some devices).
- Tap Languages & input.
- Tap On-screen keyboard or Keyboard.
- Select Gboard.
If you’re already using Gboard, you can also jump in directly: open any text field, bring up the keyboard, then use the keyboard settings entry (often the gear icon in the top row of the Gboard UI).
Material You controls you’ll likely see (and what they do)
Depending on your Gboard build and Android version, you may find theme options that map to how strongly the keyboard follows system colors.
Follow system theme
When enabled, Gboard typically aligns keyboard surfaces with your system theme (including light/dark behavior). If you disable it, Gboard may fall back to a simpler fixed styling.
What to do: toggle it on, then return to a text field to verify the key surfaces and suggestion styling update.

Accent color / dynamic color behavior
Some versions let you specify how much accenting the keyboard uses. This is usually described in terms of dynamic color or theme extraction rather than a raw “color picker.”
What to do: change your wallpaper style (Wallpaper & style) and confirm the keyboard shifts after Gboard refreshes.
Keyboard and suggestion styling
Material You updates often include changes to suggestion chips and the tone of highlights (for example, how the suggestion bar contrasts with the background).
Look for toggles that affect “suggestions,” “appearance,” or “theme,” then test by typing a few letters.

On Android 13/14, dark mode can be automatic. If your Gboard theme seems stuck, it may be set to a specific mode rather than following system.
What to do: verify both Android Dark theme settings and Gboard’s theme toggle are aligned.
Personalization settings that often move during UI redesign
Even when theming is the headline, the redesign usually touches other keyboard controls to improve findability. Here are settings readers commonly hunt for after updating.

Languages and layout
If your keyboard layout or language list looks different, check the Languages section for layout selection and keyboard type (for example, QWERTY vs. other layouts).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAlso check whether an extra keyboard (like handwriting or another language) got enabled/disabled during the update.
Glide typing and gesture controls
Gesture-based entry often lives under behavior controls. If swiping started acting differently, look for toggles such as glide typing or swipe gestures.
Text correction (spelling, auto-correction, suggestions)
Correction behavior can feel “worse” after updates if certain toggles change or if the keyboard is following a different language profile.
Focus on toggles for spelling correction, auto-capitalization, and suggestion behavior.
Privacy options tied to personalization
Personalization and keyboard learning are typically governed by privacy settings. UI redesign shouldn’t remove them, but it can relocate the toggles.
If you’re concerned about learned words or personalization, search within Gboard settings for options related to personalization, data, or learning.

Step-by-step: set up a Material You keyboard you’ll like
- Update Gboard via Play Store.
- Ensure Android is using Material You dynamic colors: open Settings > Wallpaper & style and pick a style that uses dynamic colors (the wording varies by OEM).
- Open Gboard settings.
- Find Theme (or Appearance) and turn on Follow system theme or equivalent.
- Check Dark theme behavior: if your phone is set to automatic, keep Gboard on the matching automatic/system setting.
- In a text field, type a few words to verify suggestion chips and highlighted suggestions match your palette.
- If it looks off, toggle theme-following off and back on once. Sometimes the keyboard UI caches its previous palette until refresh.
Common gotchas after an update
The theme doesn’t change even though it should
Most often this is because the keyboard is still set to a fixed theme or because Android’s wallpaper/style dynamic colors weren’t updated recently.
Try: toggle “follow system theme” off, then back on, then reopen the keyboard in a text field.

Rollouts can be staged. If the new theming controls aren’t present, you may simply be on a slightly older build than your friend who got the update.
Also remember: some settings appear only when a theme mode is enabled (for example, dynamic vs. fixed).
Keyboard height or layout reverted
Occasionally, an update changes layout defaults or your previous configuration is overridden by a “recommended” setup flow.
Check Keyboard height and Layout settings inside Gboard after updating.
Troubleshooting checklist when Material You isn’t showing
If the redesigned Material You options don’t appear or nothing changes visually, run through these in order. Each step is designed to fix a specific failure mode: missing rollout, stale cache, or theme sync issues.

- Confirm your OS supports the expected behavior: verify you’re on Android 12+ and that dynamic color is enabled via Wallpaper & style.
- Confirm your Gboard build: open Play Store > Gboard > App details to verify you’re updated.
- Restart the keyboard session: close the keyboard and reopen it in a text field.
- Restart the phone: quick reboot forces theme resync.
- Clear app cache (not data):
- Go to Settings > Apps > Gboard.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen a text field and check the theme.
- Disable battery optimization for Gboard (optional): aggressive background restrictions can delay UI refresh on some devices.
- Re-check theme toggles: ensure Gboard is set to follow system theme, not a fixed appearance mode.
If none of that helps, it’s often a server-side rollout difference or a temporary bug. In that case, waiting for the next Play Store update is usually the fastest “real” fix.
Alternatives if you just want a different look fast
If you mainly want visual changes now and don’t want to wait for the newest rollout to hit your device, you can still get control of appearance through Android theme settings.
- Change Wallpaper & style: pick a different wallpaper palette and let dynamic colors propagate.
- Toggle system dark mode: verify whether Gboard follows system mode properly.
- Switch Gboard themes if offered: some builds include fixed theme options alongside system-follow mode.
FAQs
Why does my Gboard theme look different than someone else’s?
Because Material You styling depends on your wallpaper palette and your Android theme settings. Also, Gboard rollouts and feature flags can reach devices at different times.

Will the settings redesign affect my typing behavior?
It shouldn’t change the underlying behavior unless a toggle’s state was affected by the update. If anything feels off, revisit correction and gesture settings after updating.
What if I don’t see Material You theme options in Gboard?
First confirm you updated Gboard. Then confirm your Android system uses dynamic colors (Wallpaper & style) and that dark/light mode settings match what Gboard expects.
Does clearing cache remove learned words or personalization?
Clearing cache generally removes temporary files, not your personal dictionary. Clearing data can be more disruptive. If you’re troubleshooting, start with cache only.
Bottom Line
Gboard’s expanded Material You support is mostly about tighter visual integration with your system palette, while the settings redesign is about getting you to the right controls faster. If the new look doesn’t appear, it’s usually rollout timing, theme sync, or a stale keyboard cache.
Update Gboard, verify dynamic color on Android 12–14, then check Gboard’s theme/appearance toggles. After that, you’ll have a keyboard that matches your wallpaper and a settings layout that’s easier to live with.
