The fix is often straightforward, but the root cause varies by Pixel model and Android version.
This guide walks you through the most reliable checks and fixes, from quick resets to deeper troubleshooting. You’ll also find workarounds if the keyboard is unusable until a software update lands.

Why Gboard can turn into a tiny keyboard on Pixel
On Pixels, Gboard’s layout is influenced by system UI scaling and input method settings. When something changes (often after an update, Accessibility tweak, or display density change), Gboard can miscalculate the usable keyboard area and render at a much smaller scale.
Common triggers
- Display size / Display scaling changed in Settings
- Font size increased or decreased significantly under Accessibility
- Magnification or display zoom features are enabled
- Android Accessibility > Display size or related options override default scaling
- Stale cache or a partially updated Gboard
- Gboard beta or an older Gboard build with known layout issues
Before you change anything: confirm the problem scope
Don’t assume it’s “just Gboard” until you confirm what else is affected. The goal is to tell whether the keyboard is shrinking alone—or your whole UI scaling is off.

Quick checks
- Open the same app (e.g., Messages) and compare Gboard size in a different chat thread.
- Try Gboard in another app (e.g., Gmail or a browser text box). If it’s tiny everywhere, it’s almost certainly a system scaling or Gboard setting.
- Switch to the on-screen keyboard in another language layout (if available). If only one layout is tiny, it can be a language/layout-specific issue.
Step 1: Restore default Android display and font scaling
This is the most common fix. If Gboard thinks the usable space is smaller than it is (or vice versa), it can shrink the keyboard.
Set Display size back to default
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Display size.
- Move the slider closer to the middle and confirm.
- Wait a few seconds and re-open an app that uses Gboard.
Set Font size back to default
- Open Settings → Display.
- Tap Font size.
- Reduce extreme values; choose a mid-range size.
- Test Gboard again.
Check Accessibility display options
- Go to Settings → Accessibility.
- Open any items related to Display, Magnification, or Font size.
- Temporarily disable anything that changes text or display scaling (then test Gboard).
Step 2: Restart Gboard (soft reset)
If the layout is “stuck” in a bad state, a restart can force Gboard to recalculate keyboard metrics.
Restart the app method
- Open the app where the keyboard is tiny.
- Close the app (remove it from Recents).
- Reopen the app and test the keyboard.
Restart Gboard via system keyboard selection
- Open Settings → System → Languages & input.
- Tap On-screen keyboard.
- Tap Manage keyboards and ensure Gboard is enabled.
- Temporarily switch to another keyboard (if you have one), then switch back to Gboard.
- Test the keyboard size.
Step 3: Clear Gboard cache (safe) and storage (last resort)
Clearing cache resolves many Gboard UI rendering bugs without deleting your data. Clearing storage is more disruptive but can fix a corrupted layout state.

Clear cache
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Find and tap Gboard.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen the keyboard and test.
Clear storage (use if cache doesn’t work)
- Repeat the steps above to Gboard → Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear storage (or Clear data).
- Confirm.
- Reconfigure Gboard if prompted and test again.
Step 4: Update Gboard to the latest stable build
Layout bugs are often fixed in newer versions. Checking for updates is faster than most deeper troubleshooting paths.

Update from Play Store
- Open Play Store.
- Search for Gboard by Google.
- If an Update button appears, install it.
- Open an app and confirm keyboard size.
Avoid the beta track if you’re stuck
If you’ve installed Gboard beta, consider opting out. Beta builds occasionally include experimental keyboard layouts that can regress on certain Android versions.
- In Play Store, open Gboard.
- Scroll to the Join the beta / Leave section (wording varies).
- Leave beta and wait for the stable update to apply.
- Test the keyboard.
Step 5: Update Android (and Pixel Feature Drop) if you can
If Gboard is shrinking after a recent Android update, it can be a system-level UI or input method compatibility issue. Keeping Android current is often the cleanest long-term fix.
Check for system updates
- Open Settings → System.
- Tap System update.
- Tap Check for update.
- Install updates and reboot if prompted.
- Test Gboard afterward.
Step 6: Reset keyboard app settings that can affect layout
Some Gboard options change the keyboard UI density and label sizing. If you recently enabled something new (like larger keys, theme changes, or language tweaks), revert them.

- Open any place with the keyboard.
- Tap the Gboard settings gear (often from Gboard’s top bar) or long-press the comma key to open settings (depends on layout).
- Go to Theme and switch to the default (light) theme.
- Disable any display-related options that could affect sizing (if present).
- Test again.
Platform-specific troubleshooting paths
If you’re using different Pixel modes (or screen sizes via Accessibility), the fix can differ. The steps below focus on the most common Android configuration differences.

- The round head of the stylus is made of silicone, which is used for mobile phones and tablets.
- The stylus pen tip is made of hard plastic, which can only be used for resistive screens such as GPS and navigator.
- The round head and pointed head of the stylus are compatible with all the capacitive and resistive screens at present.
- SILICONE ROUND HEAD, FOR MODERN DEVICES: The soft, conductive silicone round head is designed specifically for all capacitive touch screens, including iPad, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Android tablets/smartphones, and other similar devices. Perfect for scrolling, tapping, and general navigation.
- PLASTIC TIP, FOR SPECIFIC RESISTIVE SCREENS ONLY (PLEASE NOTE): The fine plastic tip is ONLY compatible with older resistive touch screens, such as those found on some GPS devices, Nintendo DS/3DS, and certain POS machines. It will NOT work on capacitive screens like iPhones, iPads, or modern smartphones/tablets.
Pixel in Display Zoom / scaling-heavy setups
If you’ve enabled any display zoom mode or moved sliders to extremes, revert them first. Gboard is particularly sensitive to UI scaling calculations.
- Go to Settings → Accessibility.
- Check for Magnification and Display size overrides.
- Temporarily disable them and test Gboard.
- Re-enable only one change at a time if you need it.
Pixel with multiple languages enabled
Multi-language setups sometimes apply different layout metrics. Test with just one language to isolate whether the bug is language-dependent.
- Open Settings → System → Languages & input.
- Open On-screen keyboard → Gboard → Languages.
- Temporarily disable extra languages so only one remains.
- Restart the app and test keyboard size.
Pixel after a system update
If the tiny keyboard started right after a software update, a cache reset and reconfiguration is usually enough.

Switch to a different keyboard temporarily
- Install or enable another keyboard (any you trust).
- In Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard, switch the default keyboard.
- Type normally while you apply the fixes for Gboard.
Use voice typing to bridge the gap
For quick messages, use voice input in the same app. It won’t fix the root issue, but it avoids total lockout while you troubleshoot.
Common mistakes that keep the problem alive
- Only changing Gboard settings while leaving system font/display sliders untouched
- Updating Gboard but skipping a cache clear when the bug started after an update
- Forgetting Accessibility display overrides that silently supersede normal font sizing
- Re-enabling multiple changes at once, making it impossible to identify the trigger
Troubleshooting checklist (fast path)
If you want the shortest sequence that works most often, follow this order and stop as soon as the keyboard looks normal again.
- Verify Gboard is updated in Play Store.
- Open Settings → Display and set Display size and Font size back toward default/mid-range.
- Check Settings → Accessibility for any display scaling/magnification options; disable temporarily.
- Clear Gboard cache and reboot.
- If still broken: clear Gboard storage.
- If you’re on beta: switch to stable and retry.
FAQ
Why did my Gboard suddenly get tiny after an Android update?
Android updates can change rendering behavior for fonts and UI scaling. If your Display size or Accessibility settings were adjusted (or if Gboard’s metrics cache became inconsistent), Gboard can fall into an incorrect keyboard scale state.

Is there a known version problem I should look for?
Occasionally, specific Gboard builds have layout regressions on certain Android releases. The fastest way to avoid version-specific bugs is to update to the latest stable Gboard and Android, then retest.
What if none of the fixes change the keyboard size?
If display scaling, cache clears, and updates don’t help, isolate by testing in Safe Mode (to rule out conflicting apps) and consider resetting accessibility display overrides to default. If the issue persists across Safe Mode and multiple apps, report it to Google from the Gboard settings or via the Google Issue Tracker.
Bottom Line
A tiny Gboard keyboard on Pixel is usually a scaling mismatch between Android’s Display/Accessibility settings and Gboard’s layout calculations. Start by restoring Display size and Font size toward default, then update Gboard and clear its cache.
If the keyboard is still broken, clear Gboard storage as a last resort and double-check you’re on the latest stable build (not beta). Once those variables align, the keyboard should return to normal sizing.
