Is Zionism racism?
The reproduced article reports differing answers from senior Greens. After a BBC interview, Polanski was quoted as saying: “If your Zionism is the displacement of the Palestinian people then that is clearly racist, and I say that as a Jewish leader of a British political party.” The qualification matters: the quotation ties his use of “racist” to displacement of Palestinians, rather than stating that every person who identifies as Zionist holds that view.

Adrian Ramsay, the Green MP for Waveney Valley, was quoted answering the broader question differently: “No, I don’t. And what I think is really important here is that the Green Party sticks to our long-standing principles of self-determination.” These are attributed remarks in the reproduced report, not a substitute for the motion’s text or an official party ruling on the term.
Why the debate is overshadowing other Green priorities
The report frames the conference as a contest over the party’s emphasis as well as its position on Palestine. It describes tensions between traditional environmentalist priorities and a newer focus on economic intervention and advocacy for Palestine. It also says the party’s message has shifted from replacing Labour toward using Green votes to push government policy left. Polanski’s short conference appearance added to the contrast. According to the reproduction, he arrived on Thursday night, delivered a Friday speech and left soon afterward to campaign, spending less than 24 hours at the conference. The article reproduces his line: “Voting Green, between general elections, is the most powerful vote you can make.”
Can Polanski win Holborn and St Pancras?
The report portrays Polanski as an underdog because it describes Holborn and St Pancras as historically safe Labour territory. That is an assessment of the challenge, not a verified forecast. The reproduced article does not establish the by-election result, and no result should be inferred from its account of the campaign.

A Green Party spokesperson reportedly said a “good” result would mean improving on the previous Green candidate’s 2024 vote share. A party insider was reported as expecting questions about strategy if Polanski lost. Both comments are attributed to sources in the reproduction; neither sets out a formal party target or confirms what the party would do after the result.
Could the Greens form an alliance with Labour?
The report describes discussion of possible cooperation, but not an agreement. It says deputy leader Rachel Millward did not rule out an alliance, while stressing that Greens would want any arrangement to deliver their agenda. She was quoted as saying: “We’d want to make sure that they were delivering on our agenda if we’re going to have a kind of arrangement.”
