Choose Garry’s Mod for open-ended physics play: spawn objects, build contraptions and jump into community-made modes. Choose s&box if your main goal is to make and publish games using an editor, C# and Source 2. They share a sandbox heritage, but they serve different primary activities: playing with tools versus building games.

What Garry’s Mod is best at
Garry’s Mod is a ready-to-play physics sandbox. Facepunch’s description says it has no predefined aims or goals: players receive tools to spawn objects, weld them together and play, offline or online. That makes it a natural choice if you want to experiment in an existing game rather than start by creating a game project.
Its community content is central to the appeal. Facepunch highlights modes such as Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt, alongside Workshop models, maps and contraptions. The publisher also reports more than 25 million units sold and more than one million Steam reviews; these are publisher-reported figures with no as-of date shown on the product page, not independently audited current counts. Facepunch announced s&box’s Steam release on April 28, 2026, positioning it as a Source 2 game-creation platform rather than a direct port of Garry’s Mod. That makes s&box the more relevant choice when your desired outcome is an original playable project you can iterate on and share. It also brings a different learning commitment: the advertised workflow involves game-development concepts and C#, rather than only using a sandbox’s in-game tools.

The homepage advertises standalone Steam releases and says “No royalties,” but the documentation adds important conditions: standalone distribution is documented as in preview, requires Valve’s approval and a Facepunch license, and remains subject to Steam’s standard terms and revenue share. Which one should you choose?
- Pick Garry’s Mod if you want to play now with physics tools, make contraptions, explore community modes or browse a substantial Workshop catalog.
- Pick s&box if you want to build games with C# and an editor, test multiplayer changes and work toward publishing a standalone project.
- Compare your goal, not the shared sandbox label. One is primarily a playable physics sandbox with community extensions; the other is primarily a game-making environment.
