Before upgrading gaming laptop RAM, confirm that your exact laptop model has replaceable memory and check its supported DDR generation, speed, capacity, and slots. Those five checks—not a universal shopping list—determine which memory can work. More RAM or a higher-rated module does not guarantee a gaming FPS increase.
1. Check whether your laptop’s RAM is upgradeable
Start with the exact model number, not just the product family name. Look up its specifications and owner’s or service manual to confirm whether memory can be replaced, how many slots it has, and how to access them. Some configurations may differ within the same laptop line, so verify the specifications for yours before ordering.

If the manual does not clearly establish that the memory is replaceable, do not assume that the laptop can be upgraded. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact configuration.

Laptop memory commonly uses small-outline dual in-line memory modules (SODIMMs), rather than the full-size DIMMs used in many desktop PCs. Confirm the form factor specified for your laptop. Crucial’s compatibility guide advises checking system documentation for supported memory and available slots.
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
3. Which DDR generation and speed are compatible?
Match the DDR generation required by the laptop. DDR4 and DDR5 are distinct generations; a module of the wrong generation is not made compatible by matching its capacity or advertised speed. Check the laptop’s specifications or manual, then select a compatible SODIMM.
Use the system’s supported memory speed as your reference, not the highest speed printed on a product listing. Crucial cautions that memory rated above what a PC supports will not deliver the expected speed and efficiency benefits. Its DDR5 laptop memory information discusses this speed compatibility issue. A faster rating alone is not a reason to buy a module your laptop cannot use at that speed.
Rank #2
- Extreme performance DDR4 notebook memory for laptop gamers and performance enthusiasts with systems that support XMP 2.0
- Superior gaming with quicker response times and better visuals for a better gaming experience
- XMP 2.0 support delivers easy overclocking once activated, will run at slower speeds if system does not support XMP 2.0
- Exceptional overclocked 3200MHz performance, and backwards compatible with lower frequencies
- CAS Latency of 20, 1.2 Volts
4. How much RAM can the laptop support, and are slots available?
Check the maximum supported capacity and the number of memory slots for your exact model. Also find out whether a slot is already occupied: that affects whether an upgrade means adding a module, replacing one, or replacing multiple modules. Do not infer a laptop’s maximum from its current installed memory or from a different configuration in the same product family.
One model-specific example shows why this matters: Crucial’s listing for the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52 states two SODIMM slots and a 32GB DDR4 maximum. Those figures apply to that model listing only; they are not a general limit for gaming laptops.
Rank #3
- A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
5. Install memory using the model’s service instructions
Before opening the laptop, consult its owner’s manual or service guide for the correct procedure, including how to remove the cover and locate memory slots. Crucial’s DRAM installation guide gives general SODIMM handling steps, but the laptop manufacturer’s model-specific instructions take precedence.
- Shut down the laptop and follow its service guide before opening the case or handling internal components.
- To reduce static-damage risk, Crucial advises touching an unpainted metal surface before handling memory.
- Align the SODIMM’s notch with the slot. Insert the module at an angle, then press it down until the retaining clips engage.
- Do not use tools to install or remove the memory module. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if the module or clips do not move as expected.
Crucial describes the insertion step this way: “Firmly push the SODIMM in at a 45-degree angle, and then push down until clips snap into place.” The angle and procedure are general guidance; follow the service instructions for your laptop.
Rank #4
- G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR4 SO-DIMM Series DDR4 SO-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C22D-32GRS
- Non-ECC, DDR4 SO-DIMM, 260-pin, for Laptop/Notebook
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
- Refer to G.SKILL memory QVL or RAM Configurator tool on the G.SKILL website for more details on validated motherboard and hardware.
- Usage in any manner inconsistent with manufacturer specifications, warnings, designs, or recommendations will result in lower speeds, system instability, or damage to the system or its components.
Will a RAM upgrade improve gaming FPS?
There is no general FPS increase that can be promised for every gaming laptop. The available sources do not establish a named, generalizable gaming benchmark for RAM upgrades, so a specific uplift would be unsupported. Whether an upgrade helps depends on the laptop and its configuration; treat compatibility and supported capacity as things to verify, not as a guarantee of higher frame rates.
Compatibility checklist before buying
- Exact laptop model and configuration
- Whether its memory is replaceable
- Required SODIMM form factor and DDR generation
- Supported memory speed
- Maximum supported capacity
- Number of slots and which are occupied
Choose compatible laptop RAM only after checking all six points against the laptop’s own specifications or service documentation.
