Only one game in the available evidence clearly meets the strict test of being unreleased and in development for more than 10 years: Squadron 42. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has a long public history, but its 2008 announcement does not establish that today’s version has been in continuous development since then. The Elder Scrolls VI had been announced for about eight years and four months as of October 12, 2026—not more than 10.
That distinction matters: the time since a game was first announced is not necessarily its development time. Here are the projects whose timelines can be described with the available dated statements, plus the related game that helps explain one of those timelines.

What counts as “more than 10 years in development”?
A strict count needs evidence of when work on the current game began, not just when a title was first mentioned publicly. An announcement can precede full production, and a project can be substantially reworked or reintroduced. Where a confirmed development start is unavailable, it is more accurate to describe the announcement history separately.

Which games have the clearest long timelines?
| Game | What the dates establish | Latest status in the cited update |
|---|---|---|
| Squadron 42 | Cloud Imperium says development began in 2014. The developer’s August 27, 2026 letter therefore places its stated development history at more than 12 years. | Cloud Imperium said it was targeting Q2 2027; this is a plan, not a guaranteed release date. |
| Beyond Good & Evil 2 | GameSpot reports a first announcement in 2008 and a re-announcement in 2017 for an open-world prequel. Those dates establish a long public history, not continuous development of the present version since 2008. | Ubisoft’s September 18, 2020 update said the game was well underway and that the team was pursuing production milestones. |
| The Elder Scrolls VI | Bethesda announced the game on June 10, 2018, when it was in pre-production. That is about eight years and four months before October 12, 2026. | Bethesda Game Studios said in July 2026 that it was the studio’s primary development focus, with most of its team working on it. |
Squadron 42: the strongest verified fit
Cloud Imperium’s chairman said development began in 2014. In a letter dated August 27, 2026, the studio said its earlier plan was to release the game in 2026, initially targeting Q4, but that it had selected Q2 2027 as a better window. That sequence makes Squadron 42 the clearest example here of an unreleased game with a developer-stated development history exceeding 10 years.
The same letter says staff had been divided between Squadron 42 and Star Citizen, with that balance shifted toward Squadron 42 near the end of 2024. Cloud Imperium described the split as difficult. These are the developer’s account and current plan, not an independent estimate of when the game will be finished.

Beyond Good & Evil 2: a long announcement history, not a proven 18-year development cycle
GameSpot gives 2008 as the game’s first announcement and says it was re-announced in 2017 as an open-world prequel. The second date is important: it identifies a later public presentation of the project as a prequel, rather than proving that the version now in development is unchanged from the one announced in 2008.
Ubisoft’s September 18, 2020 update, signed by senior producer Guillaume Brunier, described the project as “well underway” and said the team was concentrating on core development and production milestones. That is a dated status report, not evidence of a release window or of its present status.

The Elder Scrolls VI: a major project, but not yet a 10-year public wait
Bethesda announced the game on June 10, 2018, describing it as being in pre-production. As of October 12, 2026, about eight years and four months had elapsed since that announcement. Bethesda Game Studios’ July 2026 update said the sequel was its primary development focus, with most of its team working on it; it did not give a release date.
The studio also reported that Skyrim had sold more than 65 million copies. That figure is about the predecessor’s sales, not the sequel’s development progress.

Why Star Citizen belongs in the context, but not in the unreleased count
Star Citizen and Squadron 42 share a developer and, according to Cloud Imperium’s August 2026 letter, staff resources. The projects’ shared staffing helps explain why the studio discusses their progress together, but they are not interchangeable titles.

Star Citizen has a live version and planned updates, so it is not unreleased in the same sense as Squadron 42. Its official roadmap also cautions that planned features can move. Counting it as another unreleased game would blur the distinction between an evolving live game and a title that has not been released.
Why long-running game projects miss their original plans
The evidence here points to two different sources of uncertainty: a project’s identity and scope can change, as the public history of Beyond Good & Evil 2 illustrates, and resources can be divided between ambitious projects, as Cloud Imperium says happened with Squadron 42 and Star Citizen. Neither factor lets readers calculate a reliable completion date. Release windows remain plans until the developer confirms a launch.
