Choose by what you want from a GTA-like game
“Like GTA” can mean several different things. Crime setting, open-world exploration, action, driving, and story are separate reasons to choose a game, and a roundup recommendation alone does not establish that another title matches GTA feature for feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Game or series | Why it may suit you | What the available recommendation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Mafia series | Organized-crime atmosphere | GamesRadar identifies the series as a starting point for open-world fans interested in organized crime. Its roundup does not establish the best installment for you or provide verified platform and gameplay details for one specific entry. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | A broader open-world option | A roundup names it among open-world games to consider while waiting for GTA VI. That recommendation does not establish a direct feature-by-feature match with GTA. |
| Other roundup suggestions | More options to investigate | A 2026 video roundup lists The Witcher 3, Far Cry 6, Watch Dogs 2, Saints Row 4, Sleeping Dogs, Just Cause 4, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Cyberpunk 2077, Yakuza 0, Ghost of Tsushima, and Elden Ring. It is a discovery list, not a verified ranking or detailed comparison. |
Start with organized-crime atmosphere: Mafia
If the appeal of GTA for you is crime-world atmosphere, the Mafia series is the clearest lead in the available recommendations: GamesRadar specifically points to it for open-world fans interested in organized crime. The roundup does not settle which installment, edition, or platform is the right choice, so check the particular game’s official store or publisher listing before buying.

Pick a wider open-world alternative: Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 appears in a roundup of open-world games to play while waiting for GTA VI. Treat that as a broad recommendation rather than evidence that it reproduces GTA’s setting, driving, crime mechanics, or overall structure. It is a sensible candidate if you are open to a different kind of open-world experience.
Use broader lists as discovery, not rankings
A February 2026 video roundup also names The Witcher 3, Far Cry 6, Watch Dogs 2, Saints Row 4, Sleeping Dogs, Just Cause 4, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Cyberpunk 2077, Yakuza 0, Ghost of Tsushima, and Elden Ring. The list can help you find possibilities, but it does not provide enough verified detail to rank these games by GTA-like freedom, story, driving, multiplayer, or platform support. Check each game’s current official listing for the edition and platform you want.

What Rockstar says GTA VI is aiming for
In a May 6, 2025 announcement, Take-Two quoted Rockstar founder Sam Houser describing Grand Theft Auto VI as part of the company’s effort to push “the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences.” That frames the qualities behind many players’ anticipation, but it does not mean another game will offer the same combination.
