If you want more deliberate, turn-based squad combat after Star Wars Zero Company, start with XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. It is the closest match for tactical missions paired with squad development and a substantial strategy layer. Choose XCOM: Chimera Squad for distinct agents and breach encounters, Jagged Alliance 3 for mercenary management and an open world, or Wasteland 3 for tactical battles tied to a reactive role-playing story.

What makes a game feel like Star Wars Zero Company?

Star Wars Zero Company is a single-player, turn-based tactics game set during the twilight of the Clone Wars. You play Hawks, a former Republic officer leading an unconventional team. Its appeal rests on more than taking turns in combat: EA and Lucasfilm Games also highlight investigations, customizable operators, and squad bonds that can unlock combat synergies. The official gameplay guide explains the basic rhythm: choose each operator’s actions while play is paused, then let the opponent take its turn.

That combination gives you four useful ways to choose what to play after Zero Company: tactical encounter design, how characters are formed or recruited, what happens between battles, and how much the story reacts to your decisions. None of the games below is a direct clone; each emphasizes a different part of that mix.

Best games like Star Wars Zero Company, by what you want next

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen — closest to the tactical campaign and strategy layer

Start here if you want carefully planned missions followed by meaningful work on your broader campaign. War of the Chosen adds factions, hero classes, new missions and threats, soldier bonds, and a larger strategy layer to XCOM 2. That makes it the strongest fit for Zero Company players who enjoy developing a team while managing the operation around it. The setting and campaign structure differ, but the balance of tactical combat and between-mission planning is the closest match among these picks. 2K’s announcement describes the expansion’s additions.

XCOM: Chimera Squad — distinct agents and a different encounter pace

Pick Chimera Squad if you prefer a recognizable cast of human and alien agents over a roster whose identities emerge mainly through customization. Agents have complementary classes, and missions use breach encounters and an individual interleaved turn order rather than the standard XCOM turn structure. The result is still tactical, but its character focus and encounter rhythm set it apart from both Zero Company and XCOM 2. See 2K’s announcement for the game’s agent and combat features.

Jagged Alliance 3 — mercenary personalities and an open-world operation

Choose Jagged Alliance 3 if assembling and managing a mercenary force sounds more appealing than leading a single campaign team. You hire from a large cast, use action points in tactical combat, and manage territory across an open world with the ability to operate multiple squads. Relationships can affect recruitment: the official site notes that mercenaries may refuse to work with teammates they dislike. It also lists online co-op, unlike Zero Company’s single-player-only format.

Wasteland 3 — turn-based fights with a reactive RPG story

Go with Wasteland 3 if you want decisions and role-playing to carry as much weight as the battles. It combines squad-based RPG systems, turn-based tactical combat, squad customization, and a story shaped by difficult choices. Its narrative emphasis makes it a better fit than the XCOM games for players who want more consequence and character role-playing between encounters. inXile’s game page describes the RPG and combat focus; the Xbox listing identifies online co-op.

Quick comparison: which tactical squad game should you choose?

Game Combat and team Between-mission focus Best for
XCOM 2: War of the Chosen Tactical missions; developed soldiers, bonds, factions, and hero classes Expanded strategy layer Closest overall fit for campaign tactics and squad development
XCOM: Chimera Squad Distinct human and alien agents; breach encounters and interleaved turns Agent-focused campaign A character-forward squad and a different XCOM encounter pace
Jagged Alliance 3 Hired mercenaries and action-point combat Open-world territory and multiple squads Roster management, mercenary relationships, and online co-op
Wasteland 3 Customizable squad and turn-based tactical combat Reactive RPG story and difficult decisions Narrative role-playing alongside combat; online co-op

Can you play these games with friends?

Zero Company is single-player: EA says it has no online multiplayer, online co-op, local co-op, or split-screen co-op. The official materials identify online co-op for Jagged Alliance 3 and Wasteland 3. The cited descriptions do not establish a co-op mode for either XCOM recommendation, so check the current listing for your platform if multiplayer is a deciding factor.
