The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the clearest fit if you want a large, story-focused world and are open to dark fantasy. Cyberpunk 2077 suits players who want an authored open world with role-playing structure, but prefer science fiction. Neither recreates RDR2’s Western setting or specific tone; the best choice depends on which parts of the experience matter most to you.
How to choose a game after Red Dead Redemption 2
“Similar” can mean very different things. One player may be looking for a character-led story, another for a world to roam after the main quest, and another for an evocative setting. Use the dimensions below to decide what you want next rather than expecting any one game to reproduce RDR2’s particular combination of setting, tone, and mechanics.

- Setting and tone: Decide whether you want to stay near a grounded Western atmosphere or welcome a change to dark fantasy or science fiction. The two strongest-supported recommendations here make a pronounced setting shift.
- Narrative: If the main draw was a story-led campaign, prioritize games described by their publishers as open-world and narrative or action-adventure RPGs.
- Exploration: If you mainly want space to roam, look for an open-world structure. That label establishes a broad format, not how much time you will spend exploring or how detailed the world will feel to you.
- Role-playing: Consider whether you want RPG structure and character progression alongside the open world. Both leading recommendations are described as RPGs; that does not make their combat, progression, or role-playing systems interchangeable.
- Platform and edition: Check the exact edition and availability in your regional store before buying. Announcements and product pages can change, and the platform information available for these recommendations is not equally complete.
The official descriptions below establish each game’s broad genre and setting. The judgments about which one might feel most appealing after RDR2 are recommendations, not claims that the games share its specific qualities.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: for a story-led world in dark fantasy
Why it may be a good next game
CD PROJEKT RED describes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as a single-player, open-world RPG. It is the strongest choice here if you want another large, story-led adventure and are willing to leave the Western setting behind for dark fantasy. That shift matters: if realism or a Western atmosphere is essential to what you enjoyed in RDR2, The Witcher 3 is not a close substitute in tone or setting.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun;Engage in conversation with people you meet. Your actions influence Arthur's honour;Horses are a cowboy's best friend, both transport and personal companion;Bond with your horse as you ride together to unlock new abilities
The case for choosing it is the broad shape of the experience—an open world paired with role-playing and a substantial story focus—not a promise that its world, characters, or systems work like RDR2’s. Treat “similar” as a match for some priorities, not as a guarantee of the same kind of immersion.
Remaster and platform details
CD PROJEKT RED says the remaster brings upgrades to visuals, performance, and gameplay. In a press release dated September 2026, the publisher announced the remaster for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. An announcement does not by itself confirm the release status or the edition currently available in every store or region, so check the platform store before purchasing.
Rank #2
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
The publisher also reported, in that September 2026 release, more than 60 million copies sold since the game’s 2015 release, more than 250 Game of the Year awards, and more than 1,000 industry awards. Those are publisher-reported figures about The Witcher 3; they do not establish that it will be a good personal match for someone coming from RDR2.

Why it may be a good next game
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world action-adventure RPG set in Night City. Its official description centers on V, a hired gun in a dangerous future city, fighting for survival. Pick it if you want an authored open-world adventure with RPG structure and are interested in a futuristic setting.

- Get exclusive access to a bank robbery mission
- A collection of exclusive story mode boosts, bonuses and discounts
- Get three weapons Free at gunsmiths
This is a substantial change from RDR2’s Western atmosphere. The recommendation rests on the broad combination of open-world play and an RPG framework, not on a claim that the games have the same tone, story, mechanics, or kind of world detail. If you want another Western or a grounded setting, the science-fiction premise may be a reason to choose something else.
Check your platform before buying
The official product information available for this recommendation does not provide a complete current platform list. Look up Cyberpunk 2077 in the store for your specific console or PC platform, and confirm the edition and regional availability there. Do not assume that a platform supported by one edition or release is supported by every edition.

Other names to investigate
Grand Theft Auto V and Ghost of Tsushima also appear on a recent GameSpot recommendation list for players looking for games like RDR2. They are reasonable leads to investigate, but the available support here is a secondary editorial list rather than verified publisher product information. Before choosing either, check its official product description and the current edition and platform details for your region. This article does not treat them as confirmed matches on the same terms as the two games described above.

Make the choice based on the part you want to keep
Choose The Witcher 3 if story and role-playing come first
It is the better-supported recommendation for a player who wants a single-player, open-world RPG and accepts a dark-fantasy setting. Its publisher’s genre description supports that broad fit. It cannot tell you whether the game’s particular story or systems will land for you, so treat it as a direction to explore rather than a promise of an RDR2-like experience.
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a different atmosphere
It is the stronger direction if an open-world action-adventure RPG appeals but you would rather explore science fiction than fantasy. Its publisher places it in Night City and describes the player character as a hired gun fighting for survival. That is enough to establish the setting shift, but not enough to make a precise comparison of gameplay or world detail with RDR2.
Use the other recommendations as starting points
If neither fantasy nor a futuristic city appeals, the GameSpot list gives you two more names to investigate: Grand Theft Auto V and Ghost of Tsushima. Confirm their current official descriptions, platform support, and edition details before making a decision; the recommendation list alone does not establish those facts.
Quick Recap
Before you buy
- Write down your priority. Pick one main reason you want another game: story, exploration, atmosphere, or RPG structure. This helps distinguish a broad open-world match from a closer setting or tone match.
- Decide whether you want a change of setting. The two best-supported choices here both move away from RDR2’s Western setting: one to dark fantasy, the other to science fiction.
- Check the exact platform and edition. Search the regional store for the platform you own and confirm the product page describes the edition you intend to buy. For The Witcher 3, check whether the announced remaster is available for that platform; for Cyberpunk 2077, verify platform support directly rather than relying on an incomplete list.
- Separate official facts from recommendations. Publisher descriptions establish genre and setting. Whether those qualities will feel like a satisfying follow-up to RDR2 is a matter of preference.
